86 Mentality, 7″ Record (Grave Mistake) |
$5.99 |
Another tough HarDCore band. These guys have a total gritty 1982 hardcore sound like Negative FX, early Agnostic Front or Negative Approach. Burly riffs and growled vocals. We played a house show with these guys in DC and it was like playing the graduation ceremony at a gladiator school. So aggro and pissed off! This would be great to listen to while you plot your revenge against your enemies and vanquish your foes. They did a tour with Dead Stop who also RAGE. DCHC 4 LIFE. – Havoc Records |
| 86 Mentality |
On The Loose, 7″ Record (Grave Mistake) |
$5.99 |
With the long awaited follow up to 2004′s debut self-titled 7″ E.P., 86 MENTALITY are finally back at your jugular with six brand new tracks of tough as nails, skull splitting hardcore. You should know exactly what to expect, raging early 80′s influenced hardcore punk, with a healthy dose street punk/oi thrown into the mix for good measure. Guaranteed not to disappoint anyone who was into their first 7″ EP, these new tracks could arguably be their best material to date. |

Capricornia, 7″ Record (Slumberland Records) |
$5.98 |
First single off London-based bandâs upcoming sophomore album⢠Follows 2010âs acclaimed self-titled debut on Fortuna Pop! Records⢠Sophisticated, intelligent jangle-pop that recalls The Go-Betweens, The Lucksmiths, Camera Obscura, etc. |
| Antisect |
Out From The Void EP, 7″ Record (Antisociety) |
$7.99 |
“Finally available again on vinyl. One of the masterworks of the early crust scene. A really influential and seminal record. Antisect started out more towards the anarcho punk sound and gradually took on more metal influence to help lay the groundwork for the sound we now know as crust. This 7″ was one of the cornerstones of the crust sound. Totally killer.” – HavocAntisociety reissue, pink vinyl. |
| Assembly of God |
Submission Obedience Denial, 7″ Record (Havoc) |
$4.99 |
“Assembly of God was a hardcore punk band from Oklahoma (none of the members lived in the same city, they all met in Oklahoma city to practice). Chad from Brother Inferior sang and played guitar, with the Drummer of Burnpile and the Bassist of Subsanity. Burnpile being a fast SEHC band, Subsanity a grind band and Brother Inferior a punk/hc band you can see that there are several different musical influences coming together on this release. That said, I would liken the sound mostly to the last Brother Inferior material, which was much faster and more aggressive than the earlier more anthemic stuff. Assembly of God recorded this 7″ and some comp tracks and sadly, broke up. They only played a few out of town shows, one of which was Thrash Fest 2. Chad went on to form the Levelling which took things into an even faster realm. As with all of Chad’s projects you can see that much thought was put into the lyrics. Chad has always approached issues from a very punk working man’s perspective. His no nonsense point of view makes for lyrics that hit the nail on the head every time.” – Havoc |
| AUK |
Rise b/w Where are Your Gods, 7″ Record (Tadpole) |
$5.99 |
“A new band by Ian from 80′s UK anarcho punk’s Alternative(crass records/southern records). AUK storm back with 2 brand new tracks ‘ Rise ‘ / ‘ Where Are Your Gods ‘, both combine the best elements of hardcore punk / metal and are filled with more melodic hooks that reach out to grab your attention. ‘ Rise ‘ sounds like it belongs in some disturbing H.P. Lovecraft novel of nightmarish destruction and hope. It’s lyrical phrasing is very much akin to Percy Bysshe Shelly and it’s grinding guitar and guttural roar ( worthy of any death metal band ), will surely have you gripped. The track ‘Where Are Your Gods ‘, sees religious dogma brought before the court, chewed up and spat back out, with all the venom of the accuser and leaves it’s pious christian alter, smashed and sprawling in the dirt.” |
| Aus-Rotten |
Fuck Nazi Sympathy, 7″ Record (Havoc) |
$4.99 |
“Havoc Records best selling record to date with over 20,000 copies pressed. Aus Rotten was one of the best punk bands or the 90′s for two reasons. 1. They play excellent hardcore punk in the tradition of Discharge, the Varukers and Chaos UK 2. They make the connection between punk and radical politics in a clear and understandable way. That is to say, Aus Rotten’s politics are right up front, but phrased in an accessible fashion rather than obtuse intellectualisms or a PC sermon. Aus Rotten’s popularity brings to mind the days of Discharge, Conflict and the Subhuman when political punk bands were just as well known and liked as commercial bands. Fuck Nazi Sympathy is a challenge to the punk scene not to tolerate Nazis and Fascism in the scene. Tuesday, May 18, 1993 is a stark indictment of the genocide in Bosnia showing how little humanity has learned from the horrors of the Holocaust. Aus Rotten also released the Anti-Imperialist 7″ which has recently been repressed as well as a split 7″ with Naked Aggression. A full length LP on Tribal War followed in 1996. The LP features a fold out poster sleeve, extensive information and a copy of Rotten Propaganda, singer Dave’s anarchist newspaper. Once again this sort of packaging and creative attempt to expose the listener to a different political view brings to mind the days of Crass, Discharge, and Conflict. Aus Rotten has toured Europe, Japan and the United States. Aus Rotten released “The Rotten Agenda” LP on their own Rotten Propaganda label in 2001. Aus Rotten broke up in 2001. Singer Dave is now in Behind Enemy Lines while Corey and Eric are in Caustic Christ. Rich who played drums on this 7″ is in All Systems Fail.” – Havoc |

SARS EP, 7″ Record (Deranged) |
$6.49 |
“The ‘sars’ 7″, their 2nd 7″. After a bleak spring in quarantine, these guys decided to pick up their gear and get some new tracks on wax, and the result is nothing short of greatness. Yet another great local band making their mark in Canadian punk history. 4 new tracks of snotty pissed hardcore punk. They have been rightfully compared to Boston’s FU’s, Angry Samoans, and early Dischord titles. Features Jonah from FUCKED UP on the guitar.” – Deranged |
| Caustic Christ |
Caustic Christ EP, 7″ Record (Havoc) |
$4.99 |
“After Aus Rotten broke up, Corey and Eric decided to start a new band with a more hardcore direction. Adding Bill Chamberlain of the Pist/React/Broken on guitar solidified their line up. Tragedy struck when their first drummer was injured in a car accident and was no longer able to play drums. Enter a borrowed drummer from Submachine (later to become the permanent drummer) and the result is a band whose components are some of the most experienced and dedicated punk musicians in the Eastern US. Corey gave me a Caustic Christ demo when he was in town with the Unseen and I liked it. But when I saw them open for DS 13 at Mr. Roboto in Pittsburgh I knew I had to put out a record by this band. Caustic Christ play sick heavy hardcore that I would best describe as a cross between early Corrosion of Conformity and Swedish crust core like Wolfbrigade and Skitsystem. Fans of crust and fast 80′s style hardcore will no doubt both like this 7″ as it bridges the two genres perfectly. Lyrics deal with aleination from dead end jobs, destruction of the environment and the horror of everyday life in 21st century society.” – Havoc |
| Civil Disobedience |
In A Few Hours of Madness, 7″ Record (Havoc) |
$4.99 |
Civil Disobedience formed in Michigan around 1992. Their demo tape sold several hundred copies through Profane Existence mail order. I saw Civil Disobedience when they opened for Destroy in Detroit and was so impressed I asked them if they would release a record on my new label. The 7″ which resulted is arguably Civil Disobedience’s best material. Powerful hardcore with speed and power but not exactly thrash. The two vocalists switch back and forth rapid fire. I would compare this to Conflict around Ungovernable Force but really its totally unique. This has been one of our most consistent selling releases even though it has been out for over ten years now. A lot of people tell me it is their favorite record of the 90′s or even favorite record ever.
Civil D. later put out an LP on Profane Existence with a slightly different line up. Civil Disobedience broke up in early 1998. – Havoc |
| Cluster Bomb Unit |
…And The Dirty Little Weapons, 7″ Record (Havoc) |
$4.99 |
Germanyâs political hardcore outfit CLUSTER BOMB UNIT are back with five songs to raw, unapologetic hardcore punk rock pressed on a grey marbled vinyl 7â record. Limited quantities available. (Havoc) |
| Code 13 |
A Part of America Died Today, 7″ Record (Havoc) |
$4.99 |
After several tours across America Code 13 suffered its first major line-up change when drummer Criminal Shane was arrested and incarcerated in Wisconsin. Josh from the band Inveigh was recruited to fill in and would end up staying with the band for a year, two tours and a 7″. Fast powerful hardcore, period. Over the years Code 13 became part of a burgeoning scene in Minneapolis, along with bands like Civil Disobecience, State of Fear, Misery, Murderers and Assrash. To show our appreciation to the kids who supported us we did 100 copies on clear vinyl with a screenprinted camouflage cover for our record release show. Of the three 7″s most people consider this to be Code 13′s strongest material. The grind/crust influence had faded somewhat by this point and the approach more of a fast hardcore style. Some reviewers had a hard time with the mix of styles, that Code 13 couldn’t easily be nailed down as crust, thrash, or street punk. But it was our goal from the start to mix up styles and still have drive an energy. |
| Culo |
Military Trend, 7″ Record (Deranged) |
$6.49 |
From MRR332: âThis ripper will soon be filed under my âthis fuckinâ rules!â category, never to be picked out during a desperate purging of the shelves. Listening to this gives me comfort in knowing that the torch of straight-up, yet distinctive hardcore is being passed along through good hands. These dudes throw down fast and frantic traditional HC that sounds like a bit of JERRYS KIDS mixed with Italian hardcore and a dose of fucking whatever it is that sounds just right to these ears. Four tracks and all of them are amazing. And now Iâm getting a strange record collection sensation that my life will hereby be incomplete until I track down a copy of this EP for myself. Get this!Clear Grey Vinyl |
| Damage Deposit |
Straight to the Bottom, 7″ Record (Havoc) |
$4.99 |
Review from Razorcake: “Laced-up-tight pugilistic hardcore that covers lyrical topics like Lynyrd Skynyrd, ninjas, puppies, and testicle punches, all stewed in the rather serious gravy of socio-political consciousness. But in a good way; if Damage Deposit comes across as anything, itâs that theyâre utterly sincere. These guys, unlike a band like For the Worse, are not likely to ever be caught singing hardcore odes to their toilet. I might be going out on a limb here, but I think they sound a little bit like Good Clean Fun at times â maybe a little faster and, of course, with frowny-face tattoos instead of smiley-face ones. Musically, itâs tight and confrontational traditional hardcore and, for me, with hardcore itâs not really who does something ânewâ with it (because that too often turns into emo or metal), itâs just who breaths fucking fire back through its veins and gets it stomping and raging again like the pissed-off brute that it is. Damage Deposit does that. If youâre at all familiar with Felix Havoc then this is probably exactly like the sort of band that youâd expect him to be in. Top notch.” |
| Desperat |
Suicide Attack, 7″ Record (World Funeral) |
$7.49 |
From the frozen wastelands of Sweden comes a powerhorse of a 7â. The much-loved D-beat/rock-n-roll style is in full effect here, not unlike a stripped-down AUKTION. And much like another excellent d-beat band I reviewed in this issue â UNLEARN â this band has risen above the terrible trappings and clichés of this easily-tired rawpunk genre. Just by writing lyrics about a diverse array of topics that are actually relevant, they have blown most of the competition out of the water. Each song on this 7â is about something relevant. The title track talks about suicide bombers around the world, brainwashed by religious leaders to kill themselves and others for their religion. The next song, Love Song is a song that gives proper respect to those activists and groups who do their part to make a better world (when was the last time you heard a dis-song encouraging support for activists, and even giving hope for a brighter future?). Side B starts with Children Should Play, which goes after those who profit from child labor in sweat shops, which is a topic that seems to have fallen out of favor with the punks lately. Lastly, we have Computer Control, a song about civil liberties and loss of privacy. Let me sum this up â this is a great record. It has everything I look for in one package â simple, yet effective cover art. Great sounding songs â not too raw, but certainly not overproduced by any stretch. Political lyrics and no fucking clichés. Letâs have more of this more often. – Profane ExistenceREPRESS, TRANSPARENT GOLD VINYL |
| Destroy! |
Burn This Racist System Down!, 7″ Record (Havoc) |
$4.99 |
Destroy was a political grind/crust hardcore band from Minneapolis. Formed in 1988 and continuing through several line-up changes until 1994. Releases include a demo in 1989. Total Fucking Chaos 7″ on Relapse in 1991. Split 7″ with Disrupt on Reduced to Slavery Records 1991. Burn this Racist System Down 7″ 1992. Necropolis LP on Sound Pollution in 1994. Split 7″ with Disturb on MCR records 1994. The full story of Destroy is told on the liner notes of the Necropolis LP. Destroy was contemporaneous with bands like Disrupt, Extreme Noise Terror, Napalm Death and Doom. Fast political hardcore with grind and metal influences. In my opinion this 7″ was our best work. Destroy lived the Chaos when it really meant something. The Destroy material was all compiled onto the CD version of the Necropolis LP on Sound Pollution. In 2002 this was re released on Havoc as the Destroy Discography CD and contains all the recorded Destroy material with the exception of the 1989 demo. After Destroy broke up Mitch later played drums in the Murderers and Code 13. Felix sang in Code 13 and Damage Deposit. Nate plays guitar in Brainiol, Stormcrow and bass in Nigel Pepper Cock. Mark W. played in Disembodied and is now in Look Back and Laugh. – Havoc |
| Evans the Death |
Telling Lies, 7″ Record (Slumberland Records) |
$5.98 |
First single from UK indie-punk-pop bandâs upcoming debut album⢠Follows a 2011 single on the Fortuna Pop! label⢠The group documents and channels the exuberance of youth via the prism of five pop music obsessives, gleaning inspiration from all the music with which they grew up. They draw as much from the lyrical dexterity of Morrissey and Jarvis Cocker as they do from the scuzzed-up melodic exuberance of early My Bloody Valentine and The Pixies. |
| Government Issue |
Make An Effort EP, 7″ Record (Dr. Strange) |
$6.99 |
This only has four songs, but boy do they blast! John Stabb sounds angrier than ever and Brian Baker’s guitar playing is so raunchy and LOUD it’s hard to believe he’s in Bad Religion now… Maybe he was trying to compete with John Barry (who played guitar on the Legless Bull EP).
‘Teenager In A Box’, which is about a friend who died in a car accident age eighteen (‘You were eighteen/now you’re a statistic’), is one of the most intense hardcore songs ever if you ask me. Stabb sings it like he can’t believe it really happened.
‘No Way Out’ and ‘Twisted Views’ may sound a little metallic (thanks to Brian Baker, who’s never been ashamed of his metal influences, just listen to Dag Nasty), but even those songs match up to anything by top-notch hardcore bands like Negative Approach and Urban Waste and what have you.
Of course G.I. ends it all with one of many versions of their signature tune, ‘Sheer Terror’. And yes, it’s by far my favorite version. Ok, I like Legless Bull and Boycott Stabb as much as the next guy, but THIS record, to me, is what punkrock is all about. Amen.

$5.99 |
Brand new 45 single to accompany the new full length. Recorded in the same session as PARANOID MESS. This was originally intended to be a European tour single but we just opted to make it a proper release instead. The title track charges through at varying speeds, musically taking cues from KINGS OF PUNK era POISON IDEA topped with Kenny’s biting vocal delivery, while the flip side backhands you with one quick ripper in standard GW fashion, followed up with a Battalion of Saints cover. |

“Isolation does strange things to people. With these further transmissions from deep inside the hidey hole, the mysterious mole-man offers two huge and relentless tracks of 33 RPM shimmer-sludge. Just add Kyo-nishiki (Kyoto Autumn Leaves) for complete brain erasure. After the marathon delivery of the 92 minute opus “Pangea” cassette, this new 14 minute EP comes as a bit of a relief for all of the long-form sissies in the room. Crushing bell tones and hissing demon breath driven deep through static repetition. Minimal /maximum 1/4″ fragments reborn into a new whole by securely fastening themselves end to end. This is very pure circular sound, please find a soft scrap of lumber to rub against your cheek. Limited edition of 30 unlabeled 7″ records come cut good and loud to high quality clear poly-carbonate, and beautifully packaged in an audiophile anti-static inner sleeve with eerie full color double transparency artwork featuring a woman’s smiling face dissolving into an opening in the foliage w/ hand numbered white vellum insert bearing very little useful information. Shep and Me [Lathe-cut 7" Ltd. to 30], 7″ Record (Lighten Up Sounds) |
$11.99 |
“In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of its initial release on cassette,
Lighten Up Sounds is proud to present this limited edition lathe cut 7″ containing newly re-mastered selections from the maiden voyage self-titled “Shep and Me” album. These raw recordings captured Matthew Himes in Austin TX 2001, laying down linear/non linear plink-plunkers and no-fidelity folk-brut jewels. Pot and pan clatter, blown out mouth harp cut-ups, suitcase percussion, hand me down ukelele, bicycle handle-bar trumpet, skipping records, AM radio static, heavy-handed tape manipulations, and generally stomping around the house like a crazy person while the beans bubbled on the range. Documented using the beloved “bounce” method to a series of boom-boxes, these fledgling jammers have finally been grooved to wax more than a decade later for posterity. Ultra-limited edition of 30 7″ records, cut at 33rpm to high quality clear poly-carbonate with black and white labels re-creating the original album artwork. Comes double bagged in audiophile anti-static inner and crystal polyethylene outer sleeves w/ two sided red vellum insert. Crude and beautiful.

Ice Level, Audio CD (Infinite Best) |
$16.85 |
Brooklynâs Ava Luna is the rare band that needs to be heard to be believed. In the bandâs hazy, floaty, post-TV-on-the-Radio-maybe conceit, post-punk grooves, soaring soul harmonies and classic indie detachment join forces for something beautiful, infectious and damn-near indescribable. The twisted brainchild of Carlos Hernandez, the son of a soul DJ and occasional producer of bands like Fucked Up, Ava Luna is the sum of a lot of somehow congruous parts. The minimal drums / bass / synth lineup kicks out the most skeletal of Ze Records-era post-punk / nu-funk; a chorus made up of three backing singers add a razor-sharp doo-wop lilt; the sweat-soaked Hernandez is up front stirring soul like Jamie Liddell or a James Chance for the Misshapes age.ââChristopher Weingarten, Village Voice |

“Burning Hearts second full-length album, Extinctions, is out now! All nine songs were written and recorded in the Ostrobothnian environment, which has proven to be fertile creative ground for Jessika and Henry. While Aboa Sleeping was a collection of early songs that were not intended to end up on an album, Extinctions was written as a consequence of many tragic stories that in a way or another touched the band. Quite a few of the songs are dedicated to people or creatures that no longer exist. Even if human tragedies inspired the writing, and death is present in nearly all the songs, the sound remains vivid and full of hope.” |

Bless Them That Curse You, Audio CD (Profound Lore) |
$14.98 |
Bless Them That Curse You is the anticipated collaboration between two of the most respected and forward-thinking bands in the experimental / progressive music realm.Chicago, Illinoisâs Locrian craft epic waves of ambient noise mixed with elements of black metal and soundscape drone. The prolific group has assembled a mesmerizing and genre-defying body of work that continues to progress with each release.Founded by artist Faith Coloccia after the dissolution of her experimental project Everlovely Lightningheart, Mamiffer blends neoclassical piano with ambient electronic hums and reductionist metal dirge. Coloccia has collaborated with myriad musicians in the past but found a steadiness with her Mamiffer co-conspirators Travis Rommeriem and her partner Aaron Turner (of Isis / Hydra Head Records fame).Bless Them That Curse You fuses the two bandsâ unique styles in an elegant and beautiful marriage. Adding layer upon layer of sound to color a vast sonic canvas, Locrian and Mamiffer exceed all expectations, delivering a whole far greater than the sum of its parts. The album was recorded at Steve Albiniâs Electrical Audio studios in Chicago and mixed by Randall Dunn in Seattle. |
| Mount Carmel |
Real Women, Audio CD (Siltbreeze Records) |
$14.98 |
For those swayed by the magisterial authenticity of Mount Carmel on their eponymous 2010 debut album: its follow-up Real Women finds the band honed and sharper, thus delivering what might be the best sophomore album released by an American blues-based power-trio since ZZ Topâs Rio Grande Mud.
Nods to Free, Humble Pie, even Trapeze can be sussed out in the mix, but at the end of the day, Real Women is straight-up Mount Carmel all the way. Searing leads, smokey vocals, thundering rhythms, cascading drums, hyperbolic hyperbole… itâs all here. Mount Carmel brings back the spirit of 1973 like no one else. The only difference now is better weed and shittier barbiturates. Itâs hands-down pure rock, no frills. Nary a retro contrivance is to be heard. These guys live it for real. Honest. So climb on board with Real Women and see what youâve been missing. The results are astounding. |

Blue Rabbit, Audio CD (Crucial Blast) |
$14.98 |
Appearing in the early â80s as an offshoot of the legendary UK band Whitehouse, Sutcliffe Jugend was soon recognized as an equally confrontational and extreme purveyor of the early power electronics / industrial sound, producing on their early Come Organisation releases We Spit on Their Graves and Campaign some of the most abrasive and violent music ever. Since then, the group has pursued a unique sonic vision that combines transgressive subject matterâdark, cerebral musings on violence and sexual perversionâwith brutal feedback and synthesizer damage. Recently, however, Sutcliffe Jugend has explored darker, more restrained (at least on a sonic level) sounds alongside their harsher work, and Blue Rabbit is the latest such offering, unfolding like a night-terror across the albumâs eight tracks. For fans who are primarily familiar with the groupâs harsher output on Come Org and Cold Spring, Blue Rabbit is a revelation; a seething, quasi-ambient nightmare that lingers with the listener, its creep factor enhanced by the unsettling paintings from band member Kevin Tomkins that make up the album art. One wonât find their trademark power electronics here, nor the dark throbbing industrial of 2011âs With Extreme Prejudice; this is a darker, more unsettling experience, saturated with an atmosphere of doom and smoldering violence, as if Sutcliffe Jugend were channeling the creaking dread of Nurse With Woundâs Salt Marie Celeste through a series of blood-freezing psychosexual nightmares. |

Tenneln i Ljusets Slut, LP Record (Prank) |
$10.99 |
“Brutal, devastating metallic hardcore from Sweden, over loaded with feedback as it blasts track after track of savagely shouted, throttling hardcore that slows only to deliver mid-tempo crushing blows. ACURSED, like many of the classic Swedish punk bands, are enigma that surfaces haphazardly to unleash a new set of harsh tracks, previously with several records on Sweden’s PUTRID FILTH CONSPIRACY label and the DISTORTION label. Akin to the HIS HERO IS GONE / TRAGEDY/ FROM ASHES RISE school of dark riffs and mood, and the classic original “Prank Sound”, “TUNNELN I LJUSETS SLUT” is ACURSED’s years-in-the-making Prank debut, and one of the most bleak releases on the label yet- with minimal artwork, the band chose to not even provide song titles in the packaging to keep from distracting from the music and mood. Members also play in VICTIMS (Havoc Records), SUNDAY MORNING EINSTEINS (Prank), SAYYADINA (Sound Pollution).” – Prank |

Heâs also a gifted musician, arranger and producer â one who plays virtually everything you hear on his records including his latest masterpiece, 2 Times Revolution. This is the album that will extend his cult following and win him widespread acclaim further afield â not because heâs jettisoned any of the integrity that typically informs his music, but due to the additional vision, scope and daring he now brings to it.” |

“The kings of chaos in Sweden. Ferocious speed thrash that continually displays that disorderly early Discharge attack, but is smashed forth much faster.Hardcore guitar soloing whines generate electric volts, as Anti Cimex spew out an intense onslaught of clamorous nitro-laced aggression. Jonsson´s vocals get rawer with each release. This is one of the most legendary Swedish kängcore bands. They started in 1981, inspired by bands like Discharge, Varukers, Germs, Black Sabbath, Disorder and others. The line-up was Johnsson (bass), Nillen (vocals), Charlie (drums), Jocke (guitar). The quickly released the EP “Anarkist Attack”. In 1982 the linup changed, with Johnsson on vocals and Conrad on bass. They recorded the EP “Raped Ass”, and in 1984 they released the classic EP “Victims Of A Bombraid”, with yet another bassist.” – SwedishPunkThis is those 3 records on one LP. Essential. |

“Absolutley top shelf UK hardcore from 1984. One of the seminal bands to come out of the ealry 80′s uk anarcho and hardcore scenes. This has been a favorite of mine for a long time, heavy hard hitting hardcore somewhere between Crucifix and Discharge with scathing political lyrics. This is an official re issue and has all the original artwork, plus a thick (THICK) booklet of interviews, photos and documents from the early 80′s uk anarcho scene. So many killer records are being re issued lately I think some of the great ones are being missed (at least people aren’t buying them from me) but don’t skip this one whatever you do.” – Havoc |

| Ava Luna |
Ice Level, LP Record (Infinite Best) |
$17.98 |
Brooklynââ¬â¢s Ava Luna is the rare band that needs to be heard to be believed. In the bandââ¬â¢s hazy, floaty, post-TV-on-the-Radio-maybe conceit, post-punk grooves, soaring soul harmonies and classic indie detachment join forces for something beautiful, infectious and damn-near indescribable. The twisted brainchild of Carlos Hernandez, the son of a soul DJ and occasional producer of bands like Fucked Up, Ava Luna is the sum of a lot of somehow congruous parts. The minimal drums / bass / synth lineup kicks out the most skeletal of Ze Records-era post-punk / nu-funk; a chorus made up of three backing singers add a razor-sharp doo-wop lilt; the sweat-soaked Hernandez is up front stirring soul like Jamie Liddell or a James Chance for the Misshapes age.ââ¬Âââ¬âChristopher Weingarten, Village Voice |

Let It Bloom [Vinyl], LP Record (In the Red Records) |
$14.98 |
In The Red Records is proud to be home to the latest full-length from Atlantaâs Black Lips. Though barely in their 20âs, the Black Lips have already toured the US and Europe several times, released two albums on Bomp! records, lost a lead guitarist in a car crash, built a rabid cult following and earned a well deserved reputation one of the wildest live bands around due to onstage fist fights, nudity, violence, arson, projectile vomiting and other body fluids. You donât want to stand to close to the stage at a Black Lips performance. This grimy and chaotic four-piece garage-punk band truly donât give a fuck and will unintentionally prove it live time and again. Formed with the intention to cross the sound of the “Back From The Grave” 60âs garage compilation series with the Germs, the Lips have developed a sound unlike anyone else. Anyone familiar with the group will no doubt be a bit surprised by the sound of their latest “Let It Bloom” album which, while still skuzzy and raw, contains their catchiest and most melodic moments to date. If Royal Trux had listened to the Troggs instead of the Rolling Stones, they might sound like this (though the album does sound quite Stonesy at times). |

“Another reassuringly sturdy-sounding Prank release roars out the traps, this time the second full-length from crusty anarcho punkers Born/Dead. This big olââ¬â¢ bastard plonks itself part way between the gruff, ground-razing fury of a slightly-less-gloomy HHiG and the rabble-rousing UK82 of Criminal Damage for a sound thatââ¬â¢s hefty and urgent yet pretty catchy with it. While we couldââ¬â¢ve maybe done without the Cress cover (“Sirens” rather sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the originals…) the rest of it is solid and snarlingly up-front, all nicely tied together with some unobtrusive ambient/experimental moments that add to the overall feeling of doom and desperation.” – Collective-zine |

See You Sioux, LP Record (Dark Entries) |
$16.00 |
Dark Entries is honored to present the âSee You Siouxâ cassette by BUZZ for the first time ever on vinyl. BUZZ began as the brainchild of J-C Van Thienen in Lille, northern France, ten miles from the Belgian border. He released one album in 1985, the highly limited demo cassette See You Sioux. In the late 70s and early 80s J-C witnessed the punk explosion while studying and working abroad in England. He regularly attended concerts by Adam and the Antz, The Sound, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Ski Patrol, Spizzenergi, The Cure, interviewing the bands for a fanzine. Returning to France, and feeling inspired, J-C bought a Soundmaster drum machine and two second-hand synthesizers in 1983. He started composing songs applying the DIY punk ethos akin to Cabaret Voltaire and Fad Gadget, who like him were eccentrics in a pop-rock world.
Borrowing a 4-track Portastudio from a friend, J-C recorded 7 songs that would become the skeletons for the âSee You Siouxâ album. The local radio station provided studio time for free so BUZZ enlisted help from the guitarist (Vincent) and drummer (Franck) of The Figurines. His neighbor, Béatrice, added backing vocals. The result was the entirely self-produced See You Sioux cassette, recorded in one take. BUZZ combined new wave dancefloor appeal with the abrasive textures and irreverent attitude of post-punk. Lyrically, they addressed topics such as the Cold War, post-World War II tension in Berlin, the assassination of Kennedy, Pablo Picassoâs minimalism â all in a manner that was as sarcastic as it was politically-charged. The overall sound of âSee You Siouxâ fits nicely beside their French contemporaries: Opera Multi Steel, Norma Loy, Little Nemo, Taxi Girl, but is more aligned with their Belgian neighbors the Neon Judgement and Trisomie 21.
Artwork for the cassette jacket was all done by J-C using letrasets, scissors, glue, coloring with markers and hand-numbered in an edition of 250 photocopies. Over the years, BUZZâs demo cassette travelled from bedrooms to dancefloors around the world, and even into the purse of Anne Clark around the time BUZZ supported her in Ghent and Paris. The success of See You Sioux landed BUZZ a deal with Danceteria Records, who would release four maxi 12â singles from 1986-1989. Around 1990 BUZZ took a break, eventually restarting in 2005 with the release of a career spanning compilation and remix album. J-C continues to write and release music today with his project Vuduvox.
All songs on âSee You Siouxâ have been remastered from the original C-60 metal master tape for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. Each LP includes a fold-out, double-sided insert with photos, lyrics and liner notes by Anne Clark. 27 years later these demos provide a glimpse of the bleak post-industrial European wasteland as seen from the bedroom window during the French coldwave scene. |

| Caustic Christ |
Can’t Relate, LP Record (Havoc) |
$10.99 |
“Following up their 7″ on Havoc and splits with Rambo and Intense Youth, Caustic Christ unleashes their first full length on the scene. Poseurs shall know fear as the Caustic Christ hardcore steamroller crushes all opposition. Caustic Christ has one of the most unique “sounds” in current hardcore because they mix the bass heavy drive of Swedish crust with the high octane thrash of American hardcore. The lyrics and music sound so aggressive and pissed off the speakers can barely contain the rage. Lryically the straight forward agitprop of Aus Rotten has been replaced by a more bleak form of social commentary based on a desperate alienation. But critics who think Caustic Christ have distanced themselves from political statements should read the lyrics to Satisfied Means Pacified and other tracks on this LP. The cover artwork is by Tommy Gun who also did the 7″ and shirt artwork. I was a little un nerved by the choice of Ha Ha Ha by Flipper as a cover, that band always got on my nerves, but hey some of you out there are going to like it. The CD version of this contains all the 7″ and split release tracks as well, making it essentially a Caustic Christ discography of their material to date.” – Havoc |

“Holly-West” Crisis, LP Record (Dr. Strange) |
$12.99 |
“Re press of this great discography LP that originally came out some years back. Cheifs are mostly known for their single which was comped on some early Killed By Death comps in the 90′s. However, they had a lot of great tracks and this Lp is much better than most “discographies” of KBD bands that really only had one or two good songs. Cheifs to me are kind of a transitional band combinging elements of 70′s Detroit rock, early So Cal (Hollywood) Punk and the nascent hardcore scene. They are every bit as good (in some cases better) than the better known So Cal bands from the same era. Nice to see this collection back in print.” – Havoc |

| Composer-Maria Minerva |
Cabaret Cixous, LP Record (Not Not Fun) |
$15.95 |
“Over the course of a 12″, cassette, and a stream of ace youtube vids, Maria Minerva has emerged as one of the most interesting artistes to come into leftfield-pop focus over the last 12 months. ‘Cabaret Cixous’ is her debut album, a coruscating water-bed of mottled ’90s dance-pop memes writhing under blankets of slyly sexy new age synths while her dreamy vocals whisper and croon seductively suggestive lyrics. It’s not quite aural soft porn, but there’s an inescapably lascivious element to her music which definitely has its appeal and marks her out with more teeth and enigmatic confidence than, say, Nite Jewel, with whom she’s often compared. Musically, her references span deep House to the Euro-pop she absorbed growing up living in Tallinn, Estonia, but all bleached with that straight-to-tape aesthetic so loved by NNF and Jim Ferraro et al, while lyrically and conceptually the album’s title invokes French feminist theorist Hélène Cixous and her songwriting is both visceral and solipsistically dreamy. It’s a richly satisfying and highly recommended listen.”–Boomkat |

“Excellent UK political punk rock from some veterans. If you are like me and grew up listening to Conflict, Crass and the like as well as UK Subs, Blitz and Abrasive Wheels, you’ll love this records. Hard hitting catchy punk rock with memorable choruses, coupled with sober and serious political lyrics that are heartfelt and to the point. The “street punk” scene in America has been over run by postcard poseurs and this is a good antidote for those of us who love this style but can’t hang with most of it’s current moribund status.” – Havoc |

| Danse Society |
Demos Vol 1, LP Record (Dark Entries) |
$18.00 |
Dark Entries digs deep into the UK Goth underground to unearth The Danse Society âDemos Vol. 1.â The band formed in Barnsley, England in 1980 from the remnants of local post-punk bands Y? and Lips-X. Between 1980 and 1982 the band released a handful of 7â and 12â EPs and the debut album âSeductionâ on their own independent label, Society Records. The band also recorded several sessions for Radio 1, including a John Peel session, and topped the Independent Charts with the single âSomewhere.â Their commercial debut, âHeaven Is Waitingâ was released in February 1984. They released two further singles and the album âLooking Throughâ before breaking up in 1986. After 24 years three original band members reunited to record the new album âChange of Skin,â released in July 2011.
1983 was The Danse Societyâs year. Playing sold out tours and the success of âSeductionâ won them a recording contract with Arista Records. Spending their advance on new equipment the band recorded an albumâs worth of demos in one day at Greenhouse Studios, London in May 1983. The line-up for this session was Steve Rawlings (vocals), Paul Nash (guitar), Lyndon Scarfe (keyboards), Tim Wright (bass) and Paul Gilmartin (drums). Doom laden guitar riffs, swirling synthesizers, crushing drums, driving and disembodied vocals, characterize the distinctive Society sound. âDemos Vol. 1â is the closest youâll get to The Danse Society live experience. You can almost taste the dry ice, feel the power coming through the monitors, and become entranced by the strobe-induced madness this album embodies. The Danse Society operate in a raw, atmospheric realm less campy than many of their Goth Rock peers, unconcerned with pop charts or commercial appeal. These arenât songs, they are commands.
This 11 track collection includes an early version of the single âWake Up,â 5 demos that would make the cut for âHeaven Is Waiting,â3 songs that would later become B-sides and 2 unreleased instrumentals. All songs have been remastered from the original tapes for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. Each LP includes a fold-out, double-sided newsprint poster with photos, lyrics and liner notes by original drummer Paul Gilmartin and music journalist Mick Mercer. 28 years later these demos capture a band at the height of their confident, powerful and haunting glory. |

Almost Complete Dekadent, LP Record (Twisted Chords) |
$17.50 |
“Dekadent from Giengen was one of the most active German Anarcho/Crust/Punk Bands in the 90s. Existing from 1988 to 2000 the band released two albums, two singles and was part of several compilations. Dekadent were different from the rest of the classic Crust/AnarchoPunk, not least due to the voice of singer Tanja. Listening to it you might think of UKinspired sound, which gets his really own note through the female vocals. The Lyrics are in German: highpolitical, direct and without compromises. Dekadent was always DIY, all recordings were done in their own practiceroom with a 8-trackmachine, to that effect the sound is rough and original. Some of the records were released by the band`s own label, some on Civilisation Records, all originals are sold out for years.” – Profane Existence |

Asko Infinito, LP Record (Rust Machine) |
$12.50 |
In many ways, this LP is a breath of fresh air. Judging from the mammoth lyric book that contains translations from spanish into 4 different languages, DERROTA has put a lot of consideration into their words, and althought the english translations are slightly awkward, the songs appear to be thoughtful andbeyond your standard political rants. The vocalist has a convincing animated, furiously shouted/screamed style. A lot of the guitar work is random, playfull and scratchy but the guitarris also knows when to bash out into a full-on hardcore frenzy. In general, DERROTA blends differents elements of ’80′s, 90′s and modern hardcore and punk styles, but doesns’t appear to be dedicated to any particular era. Some of their musical ideas don’t work, like the stoner jam-out at the end of the LP – shit nearly put me to sleep – but the random and nealty-littered, jittery guitar parts make DERROTA’s songs memorable, distinct and interesting. This LP is not for everybody- the modern punk who flavours an unbalance mixture of noise and apathy needn’t bother, but those who still enjoy listening to sincere hardcore punk will find a lot to like here. “This crucial discography came out in 2006 on the now defunct Hardcore Holocaust label, but I managed to track down some copies in Europe. As we all know Finland had one of the best hardcore punk scenes in the early 1980s. This LP compiles the work of Destrucktions who were one of the best of this prolific and extremely high quality era of hardcore. I’ve been listening to the LP since I bought a copy off of Chris BCT in one of his auctions in the late 80′s and it’s still sounding great. You get the LP, comp tracks and demos here. Right on cue, the third annual report from Chicagoʼs DISAPPEARS is submitted for your consideration. Following up on the acclaimed Guider album released just over a year ago, and with new drummer STEVE SHELLEY now fully integrated into the group, these songs were again forged into proper shape during live shows before heading to the studio and the tape machine. Never ones to dither or be indecisive, itʼs a full-bore assault from the opening track to the last as Disappears attack these new songs with their usual relentless determination. Itʼs a sinister proceedingâdebut Lux was preoccupied with death and endings while follow up Guider with protectionâbut Pre Language finds the band speaking on, of all things, love. Direct allusions to Philip K. Dick, James Baldwin, and Joan of Arc sit side by side with songs about the lows of life and the characters that permeate it. Recorded in Hoboken New Jersey at Sonic Youthʼs Echo Canyon West studio and mixed with JOHN CONGLETON, Pre Language finds Disappears at their most potent and focused. The band has finally stepped into their own world and the results are thrilling. |

Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing, LP Record (Havoc) |
$12.99 |
“Considered by many to be one of the best, if not THE BEST hardcore record of the 1980s. This record caught Discharge at the peak of their powers, combining the anger, intensity and power of their early material with a high caliber of production and musicianship. Pure anger and power, shocking and provocative graphics (before these were passe on punk record covers) combined with rampaging riffs and coarse vocals. Faithfully reproduced as a gatefold LP. This has been my favorite record since it was released and I’m very excited to re issue it on the Havoc Label.” |

Killed by the Kids, LP Record (Havoc) |
$10.99 |
“The first full length release on Havoc! DS 13 was my favorite band during the Y2K thrash revival and I was stoked when they told me they would like for me to do their second LP. This LP was recorded at a top studio in Stockholm, has a full color cover and insert, comes on color vinyl and features original cover art by Pushead himself. DS 13′s sound on this LP is similar to the last LP, the sound has progressed (regressed) into a more early 80′s raw thrash sound. The guitars are less distorted and grindy sounding than the early releases. This gives the album a sort of raw intensity that allows the songwriting and energy to come out full force rather than behind a wall of distorted noise. I would compare DS 13 to early 80′s HC bands like Minor Threat, Poison Idea and such, but I really feel they have a distinct hardcore sound all their own. In the years since it’s release this LP has become something of a modern classic and remains one of our top sellers.” – Havoc |
| Dysmal Abyss |
Born to be Born Again [Lathe Cut LP Ltd. to 30], LP Record (Lighten Up Sounds) |
$22.99 |
“These are the sounds of delinquency.
“Dysmal Abyss” came into being during the cold Mid-coast winter of 2009 in Belfast, Maine in response to a locally posted flyer calling for like-minded individuals to form a band. Citing influences such as Herzog’s “Aguirre”, unfocused resentment, early SST records, Raymond Carver, alcoholism, free jazz, and your mom’s new boyfriend, “Dysmal Abyss” craft heavy and damaged dark-wave free improvisation throbbers. Featuring 15 year old Maine local Randy Nichols on 5 string bass, along with Justin C. Rhody ((D)(B)(H), Hepatitis (B) Youth, Smut) on guitar/amplifier, and Matthew Himes (Rotten Living, Free Boys, Glue Clinic) on drums/ampliflied chicken feeder. “Born to be born again” collects the crude doom-laden highlights of those inspired and crucial sessions. Feel like feeling bad? Blaring feedback pulses over slow and steady bass groove sludge and relentlessly pounding rhythms. Too noisy for the metal heads, too rockin’ for the noise freaks. Anti-guitar misanthropy, ambient bass-tone lurch, and rhythmic screeching cacophany to be listened to at maximum volume. Available now on cassette, and as a very limited edition lathe-cut 12″ LP.” – Lighten Up Sounds |

We can’t take the credit for the high quality of the product though..for that we have to say “thank you” to DATC for keeping the legacy moving forward!” |
| EARTH, ROOTS, AND WATER |
Innocent Youths, LP Record (Light in the Attic) |
$15.99 |
nnocent Youths was the first long player released on Jerry Brownâs Summer Records imprint, hitting the emerging Toronto reggae marketplace in 1977. In 2008, the original LP is virtually extinct, a highly coveted and extremely rare piece of Canadian reggae history (often described as the northern answer to Lee Perryâs Black Ark). For the uninitiated, we are talking heavy bass, drums, reverb, echo, roots vocals, keys, guitar, percussion, and Brownâs wild style touch behind the controls.Earth, Roots & Water was initially formed in the mid-seventies to provide hard rhythms and tight backing tracks for the growing number of musical friends and family who ventured to Brownâs Malton, Ontario, basement studio. Over the years, a veritable whoâs who of Jamaican music scene passed through Summer Sound to record with like-minded brethren. Jackie Mittoo, Willi Williams, Johnny Osbourne, Carl Dawkins, Leroy Sibbles, Stranger Cole, and King Jammy are just a handful of the labelâs impressive roster.By 1977, Earth, Roots & Water had developed into an engaging live entity as well, based around the talents of Adrian âHomerâ Miller (vocals), Anthony âBaseâ Hibbert (bass), Colin âZubaâ Suban (drums), Matt Shelley (guitar), and Tony âKBâ Moore (keyboards). Both a sonic and visual force, the charismatic youths soon found themselves performing in and around the Toronto area, opening up for The Police and The Stranglers while extending the UK-born punk/reggae love affair to North America. In 2008, Light In The Attic Records along with Jerry Brown and Jamaica-Toronto series producer Kevin Howes (aka Sipreano) have decided to share this vital bounty to reggae fans the world over. Innocent Youths contains the complete studio album lovingly remastered from the original Summer Records master tapes. Over 30 years ahead of its time, this maverick material showcases the breadth of Earth, Roots & Water. Dig in⦠|

Dubber Side of the Moon, LP Record (Easy Star) |
$22.00 |
“Following another celebrated run of global touring, the Easy Star All-Stars are geared up to release Dubber Side of the Moon on October 26. Inspired by the burgeoning dub step scene and dub visionaries such as On-U Soundâs Adrian Sherwood and Mad Professor, the Easy Star All-Stars have compiled the ultimate remix collection of their much lauded reggae smash Dub Side of The Moon. Each track features a unique dub producer exploring spaced-out reggae and bass-heavy remixes of the original Dub Side of the Moon â a reggae tribute to Pink Floydâs iconic Dark Side of the Moon. Dubber Side also includes 4 bonus remixes (as well as 2 additional bonus tracks exclusive to the iTunes release).Originally released in 2003, Dub Side of the Moon was followed by Radiodread (2006) and Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band (2009), establishing Easy Star All-Stars as one of the top international reggae acts of the last decade. The band has amassed over 300,000 album sales and is equally successful in live appearances, playing over 125 shows in 25 countries on 6 different continents in 2009 alone. In fact, the idea of reinterpreting Dub Side spawned from the bandâs intense touring schedule. They were continually being exposed to new dub and reggae offshoots around the world. âWe really wanted to evolve these songs and put them in the hands of producers who might take it in new directions,â explains Easy Star Recordsâ Lem Oppenheimer. âIt seemed like a good way to bring some of this newly developing futurist reggae right into our own music.â It was essential to find a balance between the classic dub masters and the new generation of bass-line enthusiasts, while also managing to express the bandâs musical outlook and development.Mad Professor had previously worked on the Radiodread album and was an obvious choice, as were John Peel favorites Dreadzone and Adrian Sherwood, both of whom fit into what Easy Star Records likes to call the âdub master vibe.â Mad Professorâs mix is typically off the wall, whilst Adrian Sherwood manages to create a wall of sound through his adventures in space echo. The All-Starsâ resident soundman The Alchemistâs interpretation of âMoneyâ is a bass bleeder from the start and is probably the track that fits easiest into the dub step category, but Kalbataâs might be the most innovative mix on the album. Israeli born and signed to Soul Jazz Records, his mix merges the tech sound into dub-step. Bostonâs mysterious 10 Ft Ganja Plant and Canadaâs Juno-Award Winning Dubmatix both provide roots heavy remixes to the album.” |

| Europa |
La Ultima Emocion!, LP Record (Dark Entries) |
$16.00 |
Europa was a short-lived synthpop group from Valencia, Spain formed in 1980 by Julio ââ¬ÅNexusââ¬Â Pastor (synthesizers), Alfonso Aguado (vocals, guitar), Lino Oviaño (vocals, drum machine), and José Luis Macias (synthesizers). The quartet championed the use of synthesizers, drum machines and other polyphonic gadgets in a city that was stuck in the throws of progressive rock. They recorded and released their only album La ÃÅ¡ltima Emoción in 1981 on cassette, released by DAI (Division Avanzada Independiente) a label interested in bands ââ¬Åcapable of building electronic sounds from drum machines, sequencers, synths and effects, rather than conventional instruments like guitars and basses.ââ¬Â
The original issue of La ÃÅ¡ltima Emoción was a single-sided cassette and limited to 500 copies. The band mixed all the tracks at their home studio using a Roland Juno 60, Casiotone 202, Korg Polysix, MS-20, MS-10 and the KR-55 drum machine. As part of the Spanish Techno-pop movement of the 1980s, Europaââ¬â¢s songs featured arpeggiated synthesizers and upbeat drum machines that flashback to the sound of Vince Clarkeââ¬â¢s Depeche Mode days. Comparisons could be made to other Spanish Techno-pop bands like Aviador Dro, Vocoder or Metal y Ca but Europa weaved a unique style of driving, energetic rhythms, bouncy keyboards and soaring vocals perfect for dancing or speeding into outer space. Shorty after their debut release the band would switch their name to ÃÅ¡ltima Emoción releasing an EP in 1983 and an album in 1984 before breaking up. Alfonso Aguado went on to front Los Inhumanos, Julio Pastor launched the Valencia techno bands Megabeat and Interfront, while José Luis Macias and Lino Oviaño formed Comité Cisne. In 2010 the original Europa line-up reformed to play a few select live shows celebrating the re-issue of their 1984 cassette Máquinas Románticas on Turia Records of Spain. Their sound remains clean, rhythmic and futuristically strange, transporting crowds to another dimension.

“DARKNESS OF CRUST! Heavy and metallic crust in the tradition of the old UK masters like Hellbastard and Antisect. Joy Ride, LP Record (Dr. Strange) |
$12.99 |
“Excellent re issue of this DC hardcore classic. I grew up in DC and Government Issue was one of my very favorite bands growing up. I was at every show, including the record release show for this LP. This LP has GI’s trademark hardcore sound, with a strong hard rock influence that was way ahead of it’s time, and as we all know now, rarely equalled. Tons of bands try to mix hardcore and hard rock and only a handful pull it off. This record sounds like it’s hardcore punk recorded and mixed to be played in a stadium opening for Rose Tattoo or (early) Van Halen. I love this record and after the Make an Effort ep it’s my favorite GI material.” – Havoc |

The Fun Just Never Ends, LP Record (Dr. Strange) |
$12.99 |
“I grew up in DC and Government Issue was one of the first bands I really got into as a kid. I swear I went to see them almost every weekend in 1984 and 85. As we all know they kind of lost their way in the late 80′s and started experimenting with psychedlic rock. This was their last great record before things started to go off the rails. Some really solid hardcore here with some rock influence (in that the riffs are “big” like they should be in a stadium). There are some great songs on this LP and live in this time period they were still unstoppable. I prefer Make an Effort and Joy Ride to this LP, but if you don’t have this one on vinyl it’s for sure worth picking up.” – Havoc |

| Holding On |
Just Another Day, LP Record (Havoc) |
$10.99 |
“Holding On released a split 7″ with Real Enemy on Havoc (with 1% records). Since then their sound has really intensified. Holding On mixes late 80′s SE hardcore styles of Judge and Chain of Strength with the early 80′s punk/HC sound of Negative Approach and SSD. This record is packed with power and energy. The vocals are raw and pissed off, screaming with the alienation of modern life. The LP was recorded and produced by Tim Mac, who has recorded and produced most of Am Rep’s material as well as numerous local bands over the years. As a result the sound is loud and clear and the energy really comes out in the music with the intensity of a live show. This LP was a joint project between 1%, THD and Havoc Records. Following this release Holding On recorded the Question What You Live For LP for Bridge 9 records. Karl and Andy went on to join local metal core band Martyr AD who have and LP on Victory.” – Havoc |
| Howlin Rain |
Russian Wilds, LP Record (Birdman) |
$21.98 |
2LP. Howlin Rain emerged in 2004 from the incendiary embers of San Franciscoââ¬â¢s underground noise-psych legends Comets on Fire. A rag-tag trio of soulful chooglinââ¬â¢ and fuzz-box triumph, the band forged their own trails into the Cosmic California sound with their 2006 self-titled debut on Birdman Records. Within a year, just before the release of their second album, Magnificent Fiend, producer Rick Rubin signed them to his American Recordings label. Between 2006 and 2009, the group toured the US and Europe extensively with The Black Crowes, Queens of The Stone Age, Black Mountain and Mudhoneyââ¬ânot to mention legends and Howlin Rain faves Terry Reid and Roky Erickson.Under Rubinââ¬â¢s guidance, The Russian Wilds took nearly three years to complete, and the long, strange trip is engrained in every moment of its 61-minute rock ââ¬â¢nââ¬â¢ roll journey. Frontman Ethan Miller delivers literary-lyrical meditations on loss, sorrow and redemption above a dynamic din of deep grooves, soaring harmonies and blazing fuzz guitars, and the albumââ¬â¢s breadth and scope recalls great, sprawling albums of the late ââ¬â¢60s and ââ¬â¢70s like The Allmansââ¬â¢ Live at the Fillmore East, Hendrixââ¬â¢s Electric Ladyland, Santanaââ¬â¢s Lotus and Loveââ¬â¢s Forever Changes. At once bombastic and ethereal, The Russian Wilds stands on its own dark mountain in todayââ¬â¢s musical landscape. |

“I-Roy was born Roy Reid and worked as an accountant for the government in the mid-’60s. During this time, he took deejaying as a hobby, but because of the rise of its popularity, he established and operated Turbo Sonic Sound and started taking it more seriously. He then went on to record a string of hits for various producers of that time. Bunny Lee, one of Jamaica’s finest producers recorded some of I-Roy’s most popular tracks, which we have right here on one big album — all tracks recorded and mixed at King Tubby’s studio.” |

Alex Ratcharge: “The sound of Mexico’s INSERVIBLES is menacing, disturbed, maybe even evil; their vocals have the same deranged vibe that made early RAW POWER stand out and the negative vibes in their tunes reminds a mexican NERORGASMO; they’ve also been quite accurately described as some sorts of REATARDS playing VOID covers – yes it is HC, but it is fucked up garage as well… “HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. |

In My Own Time [Vinyl], LP Record (Light in the Attic) |
$17.00 |
Recorded over a six month period in 1970/71 at Bearsville, In My Own Time was Daltons only fully planned and realized studio album. The material was carefully selected and crafted for her by producer/musician Harvey Brooks, the Renaissance man of rock-jazz who played bass on Dylanâs Highway 61 Revisited and Milesâ Bitches Brew. It features ten songs that reflected Daltons incredible ability to break just about anybodys heart â from her spectral evocation of Joe Tates âOne Night of Loveâ, to the dark tragedy of the traditional âKatie Cruelâ. Known as a great interpreter of choice material, Dalton could master both country and soul genres with hauntingly pining covers of George Jones âTake Meâ and Holland-Dozier-Hollands âHow Sweet It Isâ. |

Listen Whitey! Sounds of Black Power 1967-74, LP Record (LIGHT IN THE ATTIC) |
$24.00 |
The Definitive Black Power Aural DocumentOver a five year period in Oakland, CA â archivist Pat Thomas befriended key leaders of the seminal Black Power Movement, dug through Huey Newtonâs archives at Stanford University, spent countless hours and thousands of dollars online, and talked to rank and file Black Panther Party members, uncovering dozens of obscure albums, singles, and stray tapes. Along the way, he began to piece together a time period (1967-1974) when revolutionaries were seen as pop culture icons: Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, Angela Davis, Stokely Carmichael â and musicians were seen as revolutionaries; Gil Scott-Heron, The Last Poets, Bob Dylan, John Lennon and others. As a result, Thomas wrote a 70,000-word hardcover book entitled Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965 â 1975 â to be published by Fantagraphics in early 2012 â which also includes some 200 full color images of obscure recordings that encompass rock, soul, jazz, comedy, poetry, and even religious sermons blended with Black Nationalism.Light In The Attic Records presents the companion âsoundtrackâ to the book, For the time first ever, Black and White artists share space on a definitive anthology of the Black Power era. A cross-cultural overview that sees Bob Dylanâs out of print 1971 single âGeorge Jacksonâ reissued for the first time along with several selections from Motownâs long forgotten âBlack Forumâ label â Motownâs early 70âs Black Power militant imprint that has never been documented until now with provocative recordings from SNCC spokesman Stokely Carmichael, outspoken African-American poet Amiri Baraka, and Black Panther Party singer/songwriter Elaine Brown.Intensive hours of research led to a 16-track anthology that not only brings together Dylan and Lennon on the same compilation for the first time (via John & Yokoâs 1972 song about Angela Davis), but presents the diversity of the Black Power Movement like never before. Despite their common goal of freedom and respect, many of these activists didnât necessarily speak for or to each other. Eldridge Cleaver was living in exile in Algiers in 1970 when LSD guru Timothy Leary showed up seeking asylum. Weeks later, Leary was placed under âhouse arrestâ by Cleaver and that moment is presented here. The Last Poets quickly splintered into several factions not long after their debut and several recordings capture that tumultuous period. Comedian Dick Gregory was as into mocking the establishment as he was trying to make people laugh and his monologue reflects a time when âentertainmentâ needed to be political to be relevant. There were regional private press 7 inch singles from the likes of the Shahid Quintet, and the Black Pantherâs own band The Lumpen. Gene McDanielsâ Outlaw album has long been a cult favorite, and is represented by a 1970 live version of âSilent Majority.â No Black Power anthology would be complete without Gil Scott-Heron featured on a rare 1970âs solo piano take of âWinter in America.â The international significance of the times is reflected with a live 1969 recording of English folk singer Roy Harperâs âI Hate The White Man.âNo less of an expert than New York based journalist Greg Tate recently remarked when glancing at the Listen, Whitey! book from which this compilation is gleaned; âLook out newjacks, post-blacks and radical rookies â this Molotov romancing family album is about to grab your mama.ââ |

He went to Morehouse College in Atlanta, where earlier Martin Luther King had been educated. King frequently lobbied students at the college for support in marches and demonstrations in the city. McNeill later became one of the first black professors in the American university system. In the mid-1960s he moved to France where he was befriended by Picasso and worked with a number of émigré-jazz musicians whilst living in Paris. In the late 1960s he taught jazz and painting workshops at the New Thing Art and Architecture Center in Washington. In the 1970s he travelled throughout Brazil and West Africa studying music and taught music anthropology in the US.A respected painter and artist, Lloyd McNeill continues to perform as both musician and poet worldwide.
Musically, McNeill has worked in many areas of African-American music. He performed in latin groups in the 1950s and 60s and led his own Brazilian group in the 1970s and 1980s. He has also composed for both ballet and art exhibitions.” |

If you need further recommendation, know that Bob Marley begged Perry for the title track — to no avail.” |

| Outer Space |
Outer Space, LP Record (Arbor) |
$15.99 |
“John Elliottââ¬â¢s Outer Space project is a laboratory for electronic investigation. Acting as a continuance of the studies of mid 20th century electronic music composers such as Nik Pascal and Laurie Spiegel, Elliottââ¬â¢s music is deeply indebted to the inner workings of the electric signal. Acting almost as a meditation, through the simple gesture of translation Elliottââ¬â¢s process begins to reveal itself as electricity is converted into acoustic pressure and potential; the melody of physics. The six recordings on the album are each a microcosmic view into Elliottââ¬â¢s practice; a keystone, illuminating his solo practice as well as his work as a member of Emeralds. Composed and recorded over the past three years without the use of digital synthesizers and arpeggiation; a record closely connected to a personal path, attempting to make sense, to understand oneââ¬â¢s journey. Mastered by Keith Fullerton Whitman; pressed in a second edition of 350 copies on black vinyl with full color gloss covers and black and white printed inner sleeves.” – Arbor Records |

House Of Spirit: Mirth, LP Record (Universal Sound / Soul Jazz Records) |
$27.99 |
“American composer and drummer Pheeroan AkLaff’s celebrated âHouse of Spirit:Mirthâ features in our recent revolutionary jazz records book (compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker). This album was originally released in 1979 on the composer Oliver Lake’s bespoke private-press label Passin Thru’ Inc., a not for profit label ‘dedicated to fostering, promoting and advancing the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the arts’. Consequently ‘House of Spirit’ remains one of the most elusive deep jazz releases of its time to collectors.Aklaff was an original of the Detroit jazz scene of the early 70s alongside musicians of the Tribe (Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Doug Hammond) and Strata collective (Kenny Cox and Charles Moore) and local luminaries such as Travis Biggs before moving to New York in the mid-1970s to work at the centre of the vibrant Loft/radical jazz scene. Here he worked and recorded with original greats such as Oliver Lake, Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Davis (with numerous releases on India Navigation and other radical NY avant-jazz labels). At this time Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali became mentor to AkLaff, with Aklaff practically living at Ali’s legendary club/live space ‘Ali’s Alley’.In the 1980s Aklaff continued his solo career with releases such as ‘Fits Like A Glove’ (1985), and ‘Sonogram’ (1989) featuring the cream of the New York 80s avant-garde players (Sonny Sharrock, Geri Allen etc) as well his continued work alongside artists of the calibre of Don Byron, Anne Claudine Myers, Julius Hemphill, Henry Threadgill and Oliver Lake.âHouse of Spirit: Mirthâ is one of the most radical of deep jazz releases of its time. Avant-garde beyond a doubt but with an Afro-centric rhythmical intensity hard to find in the myriad of independent free/loft jazz recorded in New York at the time.Influenced by Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Duke Ellington and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, AkLaff also studied African drumming travelling to and working in the Ivory Coast, Togo, Swaziland, Malawi, Liberia as well as Nigeria, where he performed with Fela Kuti.Pheeroan AkLaff currently performs as a solo artist in New York and as part of the Cecil Taylor group. In 2006 he also co-founded Seed Artists Inc. for Artists and Communities, a non-profit organisation promoting inter-generational activities, concerts and music lessons, based in Brooklyn.
This bespoke perfect replica reissue comes in a limited edition hardback box-case CD edition and a very limited heavyweight vinyl and gatefold sleeve edition of 1000 copies worldwide.” |

Kaaos, LP Record (Havoc / Fight) |
$10.99 |
“This killer LP was originally released by Barrabas Records in Finland in 1984. Fight and Havoc continuing our long standing partnership to re issue classics of Finnish hardcore teamed up to re press this classic. Kaaos were one of the foremost Finnish hardcore bands of the 80s along with Rattus, Terveet Kadet, Appendix, Bastards and Riistetyt. Kaaos has the trademark Finnish 80s sound, fast buzzsaw thrash riffs, reverby vocals, all over the placedrumming, and plodding bass. This re press has reproduced the original Crass style poster sleeve and contains three bonus tracks not on the original. Fight and Havoc also teamed up to re issue the Kaaos NukkeEP which is still available from Havoc. Also worth checking out is the Kaaos Totaalinen Kaaos LP/CD on Hohnie records which features their classic early 7″ and compilation material. Kaaos continued into the 90s and 21st century and has several new releases on Fight Records as well as CDs versions licensed to Brazil.” – Havoc |

Having Had Forgot, LP Record (Arbor) |
$15.99 |
“Having Had Forgot marks a distinct departure from Sam Goldbergââ¬â¢s past recordings, both his lush electric guitar and synth work as well as his borderline-pop project Radio People. Having Had Forgot features Sam working with a rotating ensemble of Midwestern musicians (Tiger Hatcheryââ¬â¢s Ben Billington, Mike Forbes, and Andrew Young; as well as J. Guy Laughlin, Ben Osbourne, and Jeff Host; for a total palette consisting of acoustic and electric guitar, field recording, percussion, synthesizer, saxophone, double bass, and clarinet). The result is eight careful, delicate songs; varied in instrumentation, but presenting the same elegant consideration of mood and contemplation as his solo works. Private music from a young man; a contemporary offering in the tradition of ensemble records on Windham Hill from William Ackerman and Mark Isham; the opportunity of actualizing personal moments through various actors and the unique textures they are each able to contribute to the whole. In an edition of 500 records with full color jacket and inner sleeves.” – Arbor Records |

| SIC |
Thought Noises, LP Record (Dark Entries) |
$16.00 |
Dark Entries is proud to shed light on underground Belgian New Wave pioneers, SIC, with the career-spanning release âThought Noises.â SIC were a post-punk band from the industrial city of Charleroi in the francophone part of Belgium. They were formed by Francis Pourcel, Alain Neffe (Bene Gesserit), Micheline Dufert, and Mario Berchicci in 1977. Francis and Alain had previously played with Krautrock band Kosmose in the mid 70s. In 1978 Alain left the group to launch the cassette label Insane Music. The new trio released their debut 7â âVoltage Controlâ in 1979 on Artibano Records. By 1980 Mario left and was replaced by a Korg KR-55 drum machine. As a duo, SIC self-released the âCover Girls Smileâ/ âBetweenâ 7â in 1980, which was played by John Peel on Radio 1 in London. Unable to replicate the studio sounds for live concerts, the duo recruited three additional musicians, Wilhelm Dunker (bass), Henry Krutzen (saxophone) and Danièle Daoust (synthesizer). In 1981 their final 7â single, âFree Radio Stationsâ was self-released and the band recorded a demo tape to help secure live gigs. SIC continued to play live over the next two year but eventually broke up in 1983.
SIC stray from more conventional post-punk, mixing the affordable Korg MS-20 and Roland RS-09 synthesizers with jazz and funk elements. All three 7âs and demos are united by strong, watery Rickenbacker bass chords reminiscent of American jazz legend Jaco Pastorius and UK bassist Mick Karn (Japan). A heavy reliance on rhythm and Michelineâs strong, insistent voice give SIC its own moody personality. More of a European group than a Belgian one, SIC take cues from Magazine, âLive At The Witch Trialsâ-era The Fall, Delta 5, The Raincoats and Kleenex. Their lyrics are original and autobiographical, documenting commercialism, technology and communication as we enter the 1980s.
âThought Noisesâ compiles all three SIC 7â³ singles released from 1979-1981 plus 6 unreleased demos from a 1981 recording session. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP includes a lyric sheet insert. More than 30 years later, SIC are a document of a mutant strain of new wave ripe for discovery. |

s/t, LP Record (Dark Entries) |
$16.00 |
STARTER was a minimal electronic/synthpop group from Switzerland, formed in 1980 by vocalist and fashion designer Francis Foss, Claudine Chirac (from fellow Swiss Wave group Grauzone) and Jet Harbour. Originally the band also included Stephan Eicher who co-wrote two songs but departed before the band recorded their debut album. STARTER began in the city of Bern when Francis, Claudine and Jet decided to create their own brand of New Wave music inspired by Gary Numan and Kraftwerk. They released their debut, self-titled album STARTER in the summer of 1981, making this summer the 30th anniversary of this long out-of-print and extremely hard to find LP!
Using early analog Roland and Korg synthesizers, STARTERâS music seamlessly merges wistful electronics from Germanyâs Neue Deutsche Welle movement and powerful vocal stylings from French Chanson. Alongside their Swiss Wave contemporaries like Grauzone, Yello, Liliputt/Kleenex, STARTER created a new brand of hallucinatory âTechno-Popâ made up of chopped rhythms, energetic and almost epileptic vocals that are immediately catchy and hypnotic, perfect for the dance-floor. In 1985 STARTER reformed as a duo with Francis Foss on vocals again and Gary Grey on synth/rhythm programming. Their first single âVictimâ took cues from Italo Disco and Bobby Orlandoâs Hi-NRG dance sounds and is the bonus track on Side B of this LP. The song âPart of Youâ was chosen as the lead track on the Gomma compilation CD Teutonik Disaster 2 in 2003 recruiting new fans worldwide and ushering Francis Foss to release a homemade CD-R/DVD compilation of the entire STARTER discography in 2004.
All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley in 2011. Each LP includes a lyrics sheet with unreleased photos and a STARTER badge/button. |

2011 Reissue of Steve Colson’s 1980 “Triumph” – originally released on the Silver Sphinx imprint, Universal Sound (A Division of Soul Jazz) has treated this classic record to a Collector’s special edition LP in edition of 1000.”In the early 1970s pianist and composer Adegoke Steve Colson and vocalist Iqua Colson were both members of The Association for Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), the radical home of jazz music in Chicago, and spiritual home of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In 1980, Colson released âTriumph!â, recorded in Chicago with a stellar line-up of Art Ensemble and AACM members in the group including Joseph Jarman and Doug Ewart. This album was released on the private-press Silver Sphinx label, and distributed mainly in the local Chicago area. Universal Sound/Soul Jazz Records are releasing this extremely rare deep spiritual jazz album for the first time ever as a hardback edition CD and a very limited edition of 1000 âcopy exact reproduction vinyl.” |

| System Liliputt |
Harpa, LP Record (Dark Entries) |
$16.00 |
System Liliputt was the solo project of Geir Vasseng from the Stavanger area of Norway in the early 1980s. He released one cassette, Harpa a mini-album of 6 songs in Feburary 1984 on his own label Geva Tapes & Studio that was limited to 150 copies. 27 years later Dark Entries has baked and transferred the original master tapes, adding 5 bonus tracks, restoring this lost piece of Norsk D.I.Y. dark post-punk.
Harpa, in its entirety and all the demos were recorded in Geirââ¬â¢s home studio from November 1982 to September 1983. All tracks were written, produced, recorded and performed by Geir without the involvement of any others. Influenced by the darker/melodic post-punk bands Young Marble Giants, Fra Lippo Lippi and Seventeen Seconds/Faith era Cure, System Liliputt created rich atmospheres with intricate guitar work, ethereal synths and sombre vocals. Whereas the original six Hapra songs capture a brooding and downbeat feel the demos showcase Vassengââ¬â¢s ability to write a catchy, wistful pop song with minimally treated instruments.
All tracks have been carefully remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley for the first time on vinyl. The original cassette included six inlay cards with lyrics which are re-printed here along with English translations by Geirââ¬â¢s son! Another piece of Norwayââ¬â¢s rich post-punk past is ready for your ears. |
| The Assassinators |
Sigt Efter Hjertet, LP Record (Alerta Antifascista / Rebel Alert) |
$14.50 |
First they released a demo, then came their first 7″, and after thatcame their demo as a 7″ – all of them very well received by me and Idare to say a large number of punks worldwide. In late 2007 theyvisited the studio again and returned with the twelve tracks thatbecame this LP. Charged with emotional melodies and punk attitudethey’ve once again created songs that are impossible to listen towithout getting completely sucked in to. I’ve in earlier reviews saidthat their lyrics are poetic, but that is also true about their musicand the structures of their songs. It’s very poppy at times and allthis rambling about emotions and poetry might scare away some realhardcore d-beaters, but to avoid any misunderstanding I want to makeit perfectly clear that this is without a doubt punk. Punk in a pureand danceable form. Punk to which you can shake your ass whileclenching your fist – not in anger but with dedication. TheAssassinators makes me believe we can actually change the world to thebetter, even though they do address some dark topics in their lyricsas well. Still, this band gets me motivated to do what I think is bestfor myself and others and are doing so while providing one hell of asoundtrack. But The Assassinators didn’t just spend time writingmusic, this LP also comes with a thick booklet full of artwork and alltheir lyrics in Danish and English, along with in depth commentaries. This band has definitely not forgotten that it’s very possible tocombine punk, fun, and politics and get a very successful result. “Letthis be a declaration of love or a kick in the ass”!!! |

The Time Has Come, LP Record (Secret) |

“I loved this bands 7″ “pool maintenance” and that’s definitely the place to start with this band. This LP has the trademark twangy surf punk sound of JFA and Agent Orange, with a little bit of more “out there” punk sort of like the Minutemen or something. But just when it starts to lose me, they bring it back with the surf punk/hardcore attack. A cool band playing in a pretty unique style.” – Havoc |

Qat Coffee & Qambus: Raw 45s From Yemen, LP Record (Parlortone) |
$22.00 |
Qat, Coffee & Qambus: Raw 45s From Yemen is a compilation of rare Yemeni vinyl singles, showcasing the little-documented, evolving local music styles in the 1960s and 1970s. Vintage oud and vocal music inspired by the qat-chewing, coffee-sipping, qambus-playing culture of Yemen. Although part of the classical Arabic musical tradition, the music of Yemen takes its rhythmic lead as much from the East African coast (a mere 20 miles across the Red Sea) as the surrounding Arab Peninsula. Little has been written about the music and culture of one of the world’s oldest civilizations, and each 45rpm disc gives a small glimpse of the poetic tradition, the unique local oud styles as well as an insight into people’s day to day lives, or the highs and lows of human relationships. Overall, the compilation gives a flavor of the sights and sounds of Yemen, with detailed notes that tell the story of the hunt for music that has mostly lain forgotten in the antique markets of the capital, until now. Pressed on high quality vinyl with a full-color cover featuring 78rpm record sleeve graphics, and an insert of extensive liner notes and photos. |

SpokAnarchy! (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), LP Record (Flat Field Records) |
$19.99 |
SpokAnarchy! chronicles the manic highs and desperate lows in the emergence of the alternative music scene in culturally barren Spokane, Washington. Before MTV, before the Internet and cell phones, Spokane seemed a long way from anywhere. A small group of bored teenagers banded together to make art and music and live a lifestyle that tested the social and moral boundaries of conservative America. This coming-of-age story becomes a coming-of-middle-age story as the scene’s survivors take an unflinching look at their past, and how their lives were shaped by those years of music and mayhem. Aggressive and experimental music was the glue that brought them together, and 30 years on still resonates. SpokAnarchy was nearly two years in production with some 60 people interviewed for over 100 hours of footage shot in New York, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Astoria, Seattle, and Spokane. HD interviews are intercut with archival footage in this feature-length documentary with a soundtrack that draws on on a decadesââ¬â¢s worth of undiscovered music. By turns funny, sad, shocking, and inspirational, SpokAnarchy! is the real-life story of what it means to look back on a youth spent challenging the social and cultural norms of small-town America. |

I have been a fan of both of these bands since their first releases. When the opportunity arose to work with both of them at once I was eager to make it happen. From Ashes Rise plays dark, slightly metallic hardcore that is not unlike early His Hero Is Gone mixed with Scandinavian hardcore like Skitystem and 80′s UK crust like Antisect. Drawing on those influences From Ashes Rise has moved this sound into it’s own territory so to simply label it “Tennessee style” hardcore would be oversimplifying their sonic progression. From Ashes Rise recorded at Polymorph in the Bay Area and I can safely say this was the most expensive recording ever released on Havoc, but the Production is intense and flawless. From Ashes Rise previously released a 7″ and 2 LPs on Partners in Crime and Feral Ward. They followed up the split with the Nightmares LP on Jade Tree/Havoc.Victims from Sweden play aggressive fast Scandinavian hardcore not unlike early Skitsystem or Wolfbrigade. You can hear the influence of early Swedish hardcore like Anti-Cimex, Shitlickers and Crude SS mixed with the heavier sounds of 90′s crust core, but there is also some influence from the early 80′s US hardcore sound. This recording was produced by Mieszko at studio Soundlab. Victims have a 7″, a split 7″ and an LP on Yellow Dog/Deadalive and later released the Victims..In Blood LP/CD on Havoc. Cover artwork is an original piece from Pushead. From concept to completion this has been one of the most protracted and expensive projects ever undertaken by Havoc records. This release was greatly anticipated and was well worth the wait. |
| Vita Noctis |
Against The Rule, LP Record (Dark Entries, Minimal Maximal) |
$25.00 |
Dark Entries and Minimal Maximal have joined forces to re-issue the complete discography of Vita Noctis on a double vinyl LP. Previously these songs were restricted to limited self-released cassettes, compilation appearances and a sole 12â³ Mini LP. Beware, this is abrasive, primal music made by irritated teenagers full of angst!
Vita Noctis were a trio from Vilvoorde, Belgium in the Flemish Region. Inspired by the post-punk movement twin brothers Kris and Jos Kips convinced Krisâ girlfriend Martine Genijn to start a band in 1981.They recorded their earliest songs onto a 2-track tape deck in their bedroom studio using second-hand equipment they could afford: Roland TR-808 drum machine, Casiotone MT-31, Ibanez bass guitar and a Korg MS-20 keyboard. Their first album âIn The Face Ofâ¦DEATHâ was self-released on cassette only in 1984 by the âMuch Money Good Boy, No Money Good-Byeâ cassette in 1985. In February 1986 the band recorded five songs at Studio Care in Gent, Belgium later released as the self-titled 12â³ Mini-LP on Mad In Belgium Records. Their final recording session was November 1986 returning to the bandâs bedroom studio, resulting in the song âShe Likes Meâ which appeared on the âClimax Productions Presentsâ LP.
âMore âarthouseâ than âgothâ, Vita Noctis blend the sneering attitude of punk with the spartan structures of minimal electronics. The band had more in common with the early electronic Sheffield scene of Cabaret Voltaire, Vice Versa or early Human League than their Belgian contemporaries. Urgent vocals go from a whisper to a scream in seconds and sound restless, bored and irritated all at once. Fuzzy guitar, simple baselines and crude electronics take turns accompanying the dynamic vocal stylings. While lyrics tackle weighty topics like death and religion, the landscape they paint is as playfully bratty as it is grim.
All songs have been remastered from the restored 1/4â³ reel to reel tapes by George Horn at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley California. Each double LP comes in a deluxe gatefold jacket with cover art by original designer Stephan Barbery and never before seen band photos and lyrics for each song. Spanning three years and four recording sessions âAgainst The Ruleâ is the soundtrack to Armageddon, very fitting in the contemporary climate of dissatisfaction and social upheaval. |
