Apop Updates 5/14/12

Greetings!

The Apop shelves are on the verge of collapse! They simply can’t hold all the new vinyl and books we’ve been filling them with. Really! The shop is filled to the brim with killer new releases, and choice used items. Not to mention the turntables, receivers, speakers, switchblades, skulls, and other assorted oddities one will find at Apop. New titles are being added daily, come down and take a look. If you can’t look in person check out the latest additions to the shop at apoprecords.com/shop

This Thursday, May 17th will be a treat for those that like their power electronics loud and sleazy.  Shane Broderick of the infamous Twodeadsluts Onegoodfuck is bringing Corephalism, Sharpwaist, &  Epaulettes to Apop for a night of pure filth. Opening the night will be Fecal Dam. Sure to be a night filled with creeps and goodtimes.

“The last few times that Ive played at Apop have been pretty memorable. Back in 07′ during a tdsogf melee my head hit the basement floor. I was fucked, concussed and dont remember Eugenics Council playing at all. I was covered in someones blood after playing solo in 09′. Glass everywhere. Who fucking knows? Cheers to that. Dustin just dont touch my fucking knobs and I’ll promise not to play an ambient set. Good.” — Shame Micheal Broderick

Edgard Varese

Offrandes / Intégrales / Octandre / Ecuatorial

Record and sleeve are in great shape. Jacket has small sticker on top right and top left of front of jacket and on side 1 label.Excerpt from front of jacket:”Edgar Varèse has been recognized for over half a century as a musical revolutionary of unusual daring and originality. Yet it is only the [second half of this century] that he has beengenerally recognized as one of the principle innovators of the first half of the 20th century – a composer whose contributions to music have had as much an effect on our general musicalconceptions as, for example, those of Schoenberg and Stravinsky. The reasons for the delay in this recognition are not difficult to ascertain. The success of musical revolutions, like political ones, depends in large measure upon theexistence of a general cultural atmosphere conducive to the growth and development of the newideas proposed by the revolution (what might be called its “positive” aspect – the negative sidebeing the rejection of an established, “traditional” framework). Whereas Schoenberg’s wellknowndictum, “the emancipation of dissonance,” found quick response in the music of a largeand significant segment of his fellow composers, it is only now that the full implications of theanalogous – though fundamentally different and independent – “emancipation” in the music ofVarèse are becoming clearly apparent. What Varèse affected was, to rephrase Schoenberg, nothing less than the “emancipation ofsound.” More than any other composer of his period, he took as his point of departure thebasic sonic attributes of the material with which he was working. What was important was notsuch traditional musical components as melody, harmony, or even form, in the conventionalsense, but rather the total sonic identity of his musical material. Varèse referred to his basicideas as “sound masses” – that is, units of musical sound characterized primarily by theirinstrumentation, registration, intervallic relationships, rhythmic shape, and volume. Thecompositional techniques that he evolved to develop these materials resulted in a type ofmusical continuity far removed from the mainstream of Western music.”

Lost Tribe

Unsound

Latest EP from these Richmond, Virginia goth punx. As on their previous releases, these guys play spooky punk that’s like a combination of early death rock like Christian Death, goth-y punk like Siouxsie & the Banshees and a little bit of HC to keep things interesting and aggressive. This one has their best production so far (raw yet powerful), so if you dug their other releases you will probably like this one even more.— Sorry State Records

Vacuum Redux PHT

PHTV

Pig Heart Transplant manipulates elements of a recording by Bay Area HC outfit Vacuum. So you still get the hardcore – and on one track, something resembling the band itself, blowing out the walls of a small studio. Elsewhere it’s just vocal tracks, manipulated to sound like concussion bombing, or the instruments jumbled up and pushed through a series of filters and effects until it’s unintelligible. I go for the weird records in the genre when I can because sometimes hardcore at this stage of the game is just boring, and no amount of energy can push it back in. Even little tweaks to the nervous system like this one can be exciting, and it makes me a little happier that a band in a somewhat aligned genre could handle this sort of reorganization of its sound. That said, it’s a short record and probably of limited interest, but most people have already beaten you to the punch by now, so get it while you still can. Make this your last purchase before the economy collapses. (Doug Mosurock)

Sucked Dry

Sucked Dry

After a long treacherous wait, the MONSTER first EP is finally here from Kansas City’s wildest gang of criminals, SUCKED DRY. Five tracks of barbaric and wicked hardcore punk. While taking hints from viciously primitive acts such as RORSCHACH, CROSSED OUT and NEANDERTHAL, the six minute blistering assault will make ya sweat like a stinky stuck swine. A truly frenzied hardcore release. Wonderfully two color silk-screened covers. 500 Copies on Black Vinyl. – Pass Judgement

The Bellicose Minds

The Bellicose Minds

It was a good year for PDX gothpunk, and this EP is a just a teaser of things to come from this band. They hark back to the very early days of UK positive punk and new wave, anarchic, glammy, dark, cold, pained, and rather importantly, dancey. These kids are putting out tracks that can get you pumping anywhere from a packed basement in a punk house to that velvet and lace goth club downtown. From the delayed guitars, hypnotic drums, flourishing keys, and bleak vocal track, everything commands movement. – CvltNation

.. i think a lot of people recognized that a lof of great bands came from Oz in the last couple years and gave us tons of great songs to fill out our daily lifes. Kids Of Zoo from Melbourne are a three piece that formed in mid-2008, spawned out of the ashes of straight-ahead rock and roll stalwarts The Specimens and cast back into the filth and grime of every nook and cranny of the Melbourne circuit. After some 7s – their 10 songs debut LP deliever 20 minutes between raw garage punk and 90ies touch & go chicago styled noise rock somewhere between Monorchid, Skull Kontrol or early Rye Coalition meets Part Chimp. Mind Spiders

Meltdown

2nd album from Mark Ryan’s (Marked Men, High Tension Wires) Mind Spiders, and it’s a Meltdown, alright. This is a very different beast from the s/t Mind Spiders LP released just 13 months ago. The most obvious difference is that while the s/t LP was recorded piecemeal, with Mark more-or-less playing all the instruments, Meltdown is the first Mind Spiders recordings to feature the full live band. And what a band it is: members of The Bad Sports, High Tension Wires, Marked Men, Uptown Bums, etc etc. The fact that there are 2 drummers (Mike from the Marked Men AND Greg from The High Tension Wires both play drums at the same time) gives alot of these songs a rhythmic complexity that sets the songs apart from a lot of other garagey” type bands. Loosely organized like the first LP, with the more straightforward, rocking stuff on side A and the weird curveball stuff on side B, Meltdown, while remarkably cohesive, blends a lot of different elements: Great sounding guitar tones. Happy, warm organ. Mean, buzzing synth. 60′s pop sensibilities. Snotty garage rockers. Dark, brooding postpunk. Weirdo sci-fi soundtrack stuff. Nods to Krautrock. Oh, and did we mention there are 2 drummers? Meltdown is definitely one of the high points in the Dirtnap catalog, and given our history with Mark Ryan, that is saying alot. By our count, this is the 11th record we’ve released with him on it (1 Mind Spiders 7″ and 2 LPs, 3 High Tension Wires LPs, 4 Marked Men LPs and 1 7″), I guess you could say we are a fan. All copies come with download coupon.” – Dirtnap

Tenement

The Blind Wink

To be honest, I am proud of 90% of the music I’ve released to date. I’ll admit that other 10%, yeah these are what I’ve realized to be bad calls that I’ve kind of come to regret in a number of ways that will remain unmentioned, but this is one of my favorite records I’ve done and it was done by my favorite current band. It’s NOT HARDCORE so I will just say that now. You only want super fast and have a closed in mind, you’ll def not enjoy this. The band plays catchy punk but it’s not pop punk. It’s indie rock influenced but not indie rock. I can’t describe this band exactly as its so spread out except they play their style extremely well and their songs stick in your head from one to the next. The sound they have now is a bit different from where they started. At 1st they had a Dinosaur Jr heaviness done to a Greg Ginn riff feast, a Husker Du wall of sound all crossed with a Descendents catchiness sort of way to their music. And yes, all of that still applies to the band to a degree but they incorporate more middle era Beatles, soul, early Kinks and post Let It Be later Replacements to the mix and that’s Tenement’s latest masterpiece. 11 stellar songs (the 1st 6 appeared on the rough mix tour tape release ‘the Blind Wink’ last winter) mastered by their guy Justin Perkins who’s worked the knobs on the majority of their records. I would highly suggest this to those who actually listen to what I would consider good music as well as punk in general. – Cowabunga

Shannon and the Clams

Sleep Talk

Sleep Talk features twelve new songs that Kim Fowley and Lou Christie would have clawed each others eyes out to get a hold of in the early 60′s. Shannon can belt out fierce and fun like Wanda Jackson and Etta James going head to head in a competition for the last bottle of hooch in a song like King of the Sea” and then play that heart-broken-bad-girl-tryin’-to-do-good bit that hasn’t been done this well since the Tammys or the Shangri-La’s in a song like “Tired of Being Bad”. Cody, the bands guitarist and other main song writer/singer comes on like a crooning, hiccuping, lo-fi garage version of Buddy Holly with a touch of Marc Bolan and the aformentioned Christie. Although he excercises the economy and agression of Garage Rock in ways a man like Christie would never have imagined but with a tenderness and vocal register you know he’d appreciate. Ian, the bands drummer, in addition to his skill at his own instrument provides additional back ups that would make Ennio Morricone and a tribe of head hunters equally as proud.Together The Clams provide a secret ingredient that binds together doo-wop, early rock and R&B, girl group classics, 60′s garage/psych, surf and glints of punk in a way that’s hard to get across in words. You have to listen to it. You have to see it when it comes to your town. You have to be there and feel that moment when you’re compelled to turn to the stranger next to you and slow dance together to a song like “Done With You” and then immediately shake every part you got that shakes to “The Cult Song”. Call it what you want; Young Oldies, Garage Rock, Surf, Doo Wop, Punk, whatever, just call it on Friday night.”

Cannabis Corpse

Beneath Grow Lights Thou Shalt Rise [clear blue vinyl]

Clear blue vinyl. 2011 release from the satirical Metal band. Following in the tradition laid down by their earlier releases, each song on the record is inspired by a classic Death Metal track – this time around, Morbid Angel and Deicide are getting the Cannabis treatment!. Cannabis Corpse are not a joke band. Sure, they’ll fire up a bowl and chug a beer, but then they’ll rip your face off with a brutal old-school Death Metal assault, the likes of which haven’t been seen since the seeds of the genre first began to grow.

Neil Hamburger

Sings Country Winners

Well, what else do we need to say about this? “America’s Funnyman” (“The World’s Funnyman,” actually) has decided to sing America’s music at last! The country crooning of Neil Hamburger (though some would call it moaning) fits the white blues that is country music to a T! Neil’s life story is perfect fodder for the “tear in the beer” genre as well – and Neil’s original tunes, such as “At Least I Got Paid,” “Three Piece Chicken Dinner” and “The Recycle Bin” bring his personality to the fore. His crack “Nashville West” band includes such luminaries as Dave Gleason, Atom Ellis, Prairie Prince, Rachel Haden and Joe Goldmark, all of whom play and sing their country-fried hearts out to create a sound that is decidedly old-school honky-tonk. All this plus cover versions of John Entwistle, Mark Eitzel and Billy Edd Wheeler add up to a powerful singing debut from America’s newest hat act, Neil Hamburger!

Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood Sings Cowboy Favorites

in the early 1960′s it was quite common to take an up-and-coming television star (yep, that’s what Clint was at this time) into the recording studio and make a pop single or two to test their teen appeal. In 1962, Clint Eastwood took this one step further when he recorded a full-length feature LP entitled: “Rawhide’s Clint Eastwood Sings Cowboy Favorites.”The folk songs that truly represents a branch of American culture, is the western cowboy song. Ever since courageous Americans crossed the prairies, western songs have been popular. And there is no better prototype of that “cowboy” than Cameo/ Parkway’s recording artist, Clint Eastwood, a “native” westerner and a “natural” performer.ABOUT THE SONGS — During the long watches of the dark night, as the cowboy rode around the milling herds, he sang colorful ballads and melodies. Alone with just the moon, the stars and the herd, the songs of the cowboy were often plaintiff, sad and emotionally moving. He sang of his home, his girl, his land of dreams and his hopes for tomorrow. In the Cameo recording, Clint Eastwood presents an exciting song picture of the west – as it was. He vividly describes the life of the cowboy…he sings of their dreams, their sorrows and their joys. And, he sings this unique collection of “Cowboy Favorites” with an intimacy and style that marks him as a true show business “great.”TRACK LISTING — On this hi-fi recording, listen to his outstanding performance as he sings: “Bouquet of Roses,” “Sierra Nevada,” “Don’t Fence Me In,” and “Are You Satisfied.” Other folks classics equally outstanding are: “Santa Fe Trail,” “Last Roundup,” “Mexicali Rose,” Tumblin’ Tumbleweed,” and “Twilight On The Trail.” Included also are “Searchin’ For Somewhere,” “I Love You More,” and “San Antonio Rose.”This album represents a collection of songs closely identified with the spirit of America. Here, then, Cameo/Parkway’s talented vocalist Clint Eastwood, and America’s most popular “cowboy favorites”…an unsurpassed combination that spells “entertainment.”…excerpt written by Cameo Records

Ennio Morricone

L Attentato

The original soundtrack recording for this obscure 1972 French-Italian political thriller, directed by Yves Boisset, is a dramatic & intense score by the maestro Ennio Morricone. The film stars Jean Seberg, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Roy Scheider & Michel Piccoli.

Ennio Morricone

Corleone

1977 movie directed by Pasquale Squitieri and set in Corleone, Sicily during the 1950s, two childhood friends, Michele Labruzzo and Vito Gargano, have chosen opposite roads in life. Michele is now a leader of the farmers’ movement and its quest to free the land from the iron fist of the nobility and the mafia (represented by Baron Miceli and local mafia boss Don Giusto Provenzano), while Vito is the trusted “yes-man” of Don Provenzano, and eventually vows to kill Michele in exchange for control over the Baron’s lands. While this may not be one of Morricone’s better-known soundtracks, it is nonetheless top-drawer Morricone who does not waste a note in turning this film into an epic tale of good vs. evil. By now already more than a decade into his career, the Maestro had already written dozens of soundtracks and established himself as one of the best-known and most talented film composers in the world, a title he maintains to this day.

Kristeen Young

V the Volcanic

Kristeen Young is that rare talent whose very existence proves how inadequate the tools of music journalism are for describing a true original.I’m talking in particular about the tired tactic of comparing artists to other artists and then doing a clever backpedal about the actual “sounds like” factor. As in, “If Kate Bush and David Bowie had a baby and hired Trent Reznor as a sitter, you still wouldn’t have Kristeen Young.” Better to note that her operatic voice can jump multiple octaves with absolute precision and haunting tremolo, that her piano playing can swing from thunderous and dissonant to delicate and lyrical on a dime, and that she dishes out an alarming density of melodies that will get stuck in your head. In fact, qualities like these attracted the attention of the Thin White Duke himself, with whom Young sang the duet “Saviour.” In 2007, she recorded vocals on two Morrissey tracks. Produced by Bowie alumnus Tony Visconti, her latest album V The Volcanic draws as much on funk and electro as it does on art-rock, with each song written from the point of view of a different film character that inspires Young. That these range from Violet Bick in It’s a Wonderful Life to the replicant Pris from Blade Runner further speaks to Young’s songwriting breadth. Look—just go get the record. And see a live show if you can. No matter how much you think you’ve heard it all before, Kristeen Young will make you believe in discovering new music again. – Keyboard Magazine

It is no longer the event itself but it remains history.Psychic TV played 4 disconcerts in Tokyo on the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th of January 1986. Approximately 2000+ people attended each night. All the musick on this record is taken from the last night. It is not necessarily the most perfect moments musically. Rather we have chosen parts that reflect our mood, the element of chance, and otherwise not released material. The process is the product. There will be 23 live albums. One released every month for 23 months on the 23rd of each month. The First Will And Testament of Psychic TV. The December issue will be “Live in Paris”. Pokey LaFarge and the River City Three

Middle of Everywhere

Channeling American roots, country blues, and jazz traditions of the early 20th century, Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three’s newest recording is surely a most inspired 21st -century creation. Middle of Everywhere represents the latest addition to a growing eminence in contemporary American roots music, and LaFarge is definitely paving the way. He and his crew don’t just pay homage to their artistic forbears here – they commandeer their legacies and create something new— and with Midwestern country blues mashed with Western swing, sweet harmony vocals, and hints of New Orleans style horns and lap steel throughout, the title Middle of Everywhere is particularly fitting. LaFarge’s honest, approachable songwriting chops shine through on such tracks as “Head to Toe,” and “Ain’t the Same,” with The South City Three all the while providing an impeccable up-tempo driving rhythm. LaFarge has always had the grace, charm, and flair of the musicians of long ago, but Middle of Everywhere shows just how much of a musical force he is, and how much command he possesses as he steps out with accordant confidence.Book is used but in nice shape.

Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three

Chittlin Cookin Time In Cheatham County

Pokey LaFarge and The South City Three on Jack White’s THIRD MAN label, present “Chittlin’ Cookin’ Time in Cheatham County.” From St. Louis, Missouri comes a wonderfully fresh and quirky kind of pop music that combines a riverboat ragtime sound with Delta-meets-Appalachia songwriting, all laid down in front of a big, big swingin’ beat. LaFarge is a neo-hobo, constantly traveling and continually inspired by early American roots music from throughout the land. But while Pokey LaFarge and his crew may summon the likes of Blind Blake, Dan Hicks, or Leon Redbone, and their music may be a fitting soundtrack to R. Crumb’s comics, don’t call it old-timey. Pokey and the South City Three are here to grace this electric world with their unique sound, throwback and rough around the edges featuring parlor guitar, guitjo (a guitar-tuned six-string banjo) kazoo and harmonica, but all with a modern twist.

Sound Ceremony

Sound Ceremony

‘We bring to your attention, an invitation to the bizarre.’ So goes the final song on Canadian born guitarist and songwriter Ron Warren Ganderton’s 1979 LP with his group Sound Ceremony. Ganderton self-released three LPs with the band while living in the United Kingdom during the 1970s and ’80s. First came Guitar Star (1973), then Sound Ceremony (1979) and finally Precious As England (1981). Despite some modest distribution and frequent gigs, the band never seemed to really take off and Ganderton eventually returned to his native Vancouver (where he still resides), leaving hundreds of unsold records in the attic of his house. While these copies seem to have been lost to the ravages of time, One Kind Favor will now reissue the second Sound Ceremony LP. All of the group’s efforts are undeniably unique, but their middle record is the true brain-damaged winner of the bunch. The record surely fits somewhere into the UK punk explosion of the day, but it’s also looks back to the mid-sixties rock that Ron cut his teeth on and ahead to some sort of maniac future form of entertainment that perhaps has not been invented yet. Ganderton’s mildly ‘out of it’ stream of consciousness lyrics show a clear lack of self-censorship and that’s really one of the albums strongest assets. He has created this character of himself as a huge rock star and a sex symbol, and who are we to deny his claims? The band chugs along amiably as Ganderton covers such terrain as his beating heart (it’s made of rock), his distaste for education (he’d prefer to teach a lesson in bed) and his electric brain (which happens to be insane). If you’ve never heard a singer do a count-off all the way up to seventeen, then now is your big chance! Features what is perhaps the greatest anti-cigarette song of all time.

Ben Vida

Esstends-Esstends-Esstends

In collaboration with Keith Fullerton Whitman and Greg Davis, Ben Vida explores cross-control voltage-integrated improvisation and real-time automatic group composition. Ben has worked with artists Hisham Bharoocha (duo as Soft Circle), Siebren Versteeg, Doug Aitken, Nadia Hironaka and Mathew Suib. He has played in ensembles led by Tony Conrad, Rhys Chatham, and Werner Dafeldecker. As an improviser, he has performed with Milo Fine, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Chad Taylor, Kevin Drumm, Yamatsuka Eye and C. Spencer Yeh, among many others. He has released over 20 records on such labels as Thrill Jockey, Drag City, PAN, Amish, Bottrop-Boy, Häpna and Kranky. In 2011, Ben was Composer in Residency at Diapason Space, NYC and at EMS Studios, Stockholm and was awarded a Swedish Arts Committee Travel Grant, ISSUE Project Room Emerging Artists Commission and Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona “Composing with Process” Exclusive Works Commission. Esstends-Esstends-Esstends is a collection of spatial compositions in which audio focal points shift between external and internal emanation sources. The intent with this work is to escape the stereo image and create an activated listening space of expanded spatialization. Using just intoned pitch combinations to produce difference tones and harmonic distortions, sound materials are created that emanate from both the playback speakers and inner ear of the listener. By engaging the listener’s sense of aural perception and sound localization in relationship to compositional structure, these pieces act to reframe the listening experience and encourage an engagement with, not only the form and aesthetic of the music, but the sonic space a recorded piece of music projects. Higher amplitude will help to reveal. Limited edition of 500 copies, pressed on 140 gram vinyl. Housed in a poly-lined inner sleeve, packaged in a pro-press color jacket which itself is housed in a silk-screened PVC sleeve with artwork by Kathryn Politis & Bill Kouligas.

The Residents

Third Reich n Roll

The Residents’ third album, originally released in 1976. People have speculated whether the Residents were hinting that rock ‘n’ roll has brain-washed the youth of the world. When confronted with this possibility, they replied, ‘Well, it may be true or it may not, but we just wanted to kick out the jams and get it on.’ The Third Reich ‘n’ Roll consists of two suites, Swastikas on Parade and Hitler was a Vegetarian. Both are semi-phonetic interpretations of top forty hits from the sixties. ‘Our roots,’ say the Residents, a bright orange carrot clutched lovingly in their hands.

Omnivore

Omnivore

First album by Glenna Van Nostrand, a Cambridge, MA-based performance artist obsessed with archaic telecommunication hardware. Using solo vocals run through an old telephone, amplified by a variety of radios, her work creates its own rhythms through hypnotic layering, repetition and the imperfections built into her chosen delivery system. Alternately ethereal and cracked, her performance takes simple kernels of thought and speech, creating mystifying vistas of otherness that hint at the eternal now. The only specific musical accompaniment comes from her use of a telephone’s touch pad as a keyboard, but the rich weirdness of her compositions is consistent and dazzling. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Machines With Magnets with Keith Souza and Seth Manchester in Providence. Are you ready for two side-long slices of the Omnivore experience? Misty Hush Revival

Your Heart Is Broken

One of the most obscure U.S. private pressings from the late ’60s/early ’70s. For many years, The Misty Hush Revival name was only a rumor whispered in collector’s circles, with only a handful of copies known of the original album around today. Like The Bachs or The Index, this is one of those hard-to-describe albums which seems to live in a world of its own. Despite the late 1972 release date, the music here sounds more late ’60s than early ’70s and the whole album has a cool, lost-in-time atmosphere. The group were in fact a club band from New Jersey, but surprisingly all the tracks are originals — no cover versions — and they range from fragile, dreamy pop-psych numbers to raw garage, fuzzed-out jams and teen-beat sounds. Like Patrick Lundborg says in Acid Archives: “A cool, atmospheric trip for fans of the tri-state late ’60s club sound.” First time-ever reissue, remastered on 24-bit. Includes the original artwork and an insert with rare pictures and liner notes by Jack D. Fleischer.

Ahead of a new album, The Marble Downs — recorded with Bonnie “Prince” Billy — Glasgow’s Trembling Bells return with an eight-song vinyl-only EP. Entirely exclusive music, unique to this release, with a lovely silk-screened sleeve, the Duchess EP is effectively divided into two halves. The first is comprised of four songs from The Marble Downs sessions, with Will Oldham dueting with Trembling Bells singer Lavinia Blackwall. Three of the EP’s Oldham collaborations are original compositions and there’s also a reinvention of Scott Walker’s “Duchess.”

Fingerprince

The Residents’ fourth album back on vinyl! Recorded in 1976, Fingerprince is The Residents’ fourth album. However, when it was being recorded it was not called Fingerprince. In 1976 it was called Tourniquet of Roses and was so long that it would have consumed three LP sides. The album was cut back to the standard length of two sides, which was renamed Fingerprince. Thanks to the length of CD, the original Tourniquet of Roses was restored. The title Fingerprince is still in use for the longer version however. Vinyl version includes digital download card featuring everything on the CD version!

Sympathy Nervous

Automaticism

Sympathy Nervous is the project of Japanese artist Yosihumi Niinuma. Influenced by both classical and Krautrock, he began recording in 1979, and released several records on the highly coveted Vanity label. He continued to record and self-release much of his work throughout the ’80s and ’90s. His sound is intelligent and probably the most unique minimal synth to come out of Japan. Exploring dystopian themes, his music is well balanced and beautifully recorded. Automaticism features songs Yosihumi Niinuma recorded between 1979-1981. Most were originally slated for a cassette release but never saw the light of day until now. When the Tsunami washed away the coast of Japan last March 2011, Niinuma lost everything: an entire lifetime of recordings, instruments, hand built sequencers, and even his home. Fortunately, he had sent us his audio masters prior to the disaster. This release is fully dedicated to him, in memory of all his lost recordings. The record is pressed on 180 gram ultra clear vinyl and comes in a printed heavy clear sleeve, with Niinuma’s account of what happened on that day of March 11, 2011 and the months that followed.

Blow-Up (180 Gram Vinyl)

In late 1966, Herbie Hancock with Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette entered a New York studio to capture the vibe of ‘swinging London’ in a jazz mode — with grooves that create effective bluesy moods on the slow pieces and funky ones on the up-tempo tracks. Meanwhile in London, the Yardbirds (with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page) were recording additional material for use in the Blow-Up movie soundtrack. Liner notes by maverick journalist Steve Dollar. Superb audiophile remastering. 180 gram HQ vinyl. Gatefold sleeve.

Orgelvark: En Stadig Samling Svensk Syntmusik — a solid collection of Swedish synth music.

Minimal Wave proudly presents a newly remastered vinyl edition of the cult Swedish cassette compilation Orgelvark, subtitled En Stadig Samling Svensk Syntmusik — ‘a solid collection of Swedish synth music.’ Orgelvark is a compilation of Swedish synthpop, experimental and industrial music representative of the underground tape scene that thrived there in the 1980s. Many of the bands didn’t quite fit into one particular genre, and most remained unknown. They lived in small villages and were making what can be described as electronic folk music. Orgelvark was originally compiled and released on cassette in 1986 by Tor Sigvardson, also known for his own musical project 18:e Oktober and cassette label Neukoln. The vinyl edition includes five previously unreleased tracks which were submitted to Tor for the original 1986 cassette release but due to space limitations, never made it on there. All the audio has been remastered from the original tapes especially for vinyl by Tor himself. Limited edition of 999 hand-numbered copies, pressed on 160 gram vinyl and presented in a matte gatefold jacket.

Kimio Mizutani

A Path Through Haze

180 gram vinyl reissue of this ultra-rare ’70s Japanese rock album. Kimio Mizutani was the guitarist in the excellent Japanese freak-out group, Love Live Life + 1 and this reissue is of his first solo album from 1971. Mizutani plays electric and “folk” guitar and leads a largish ensemble (bass, drums, organ, Moog and vocals) through what is widely-regarded as one of the true psychedelic masterpieces of the ’70s Japanese scene. Sensitive interludes (accompanied by the Toyama String Quartet and the Etoh Wood Quartet), tasteful nods to progressive/fusionist extension and a lovely, hovering psych guitar from Mizutani dominate proceedings. A nice merger of hard rock conceptualization and the complexities that would evolve from it — and, until now, almost impossible to hear within the confines of western society.

Ike Reiko

Kokotsu No Sekai

LP version. Although Ike Reiko was a mere 17 years of age when she recorded 1971′s Kokotsu No Sekai, she was already a star in the world of Japanese erotic movies. Despite the tough-gal image, the music is pretty darn life-affirming, so don’t think for a second you’re getting an easy listening album here — this is about as sexual as music can get. Throw “French Kiss” out of the window and give a kiss goodbye to your Serge Gainsbourg records, Ike Reiko is more sizzling than a branding iron as it makes its mark on the farmer’s herd. The sex is literally dripping from every note on this record — the style is “Iroke Kayôkyoku” or erotic kayôkyoku (kayôkyoku being a style of Japanese pop) but the sort of naïve jazz and pseudo spy theme movie music is all draped in a shroud of sexual shouts, screams and coos from the clearly excited Reiko. One must assume that she was in some kind of state of euphoria in the recording studio from the evidence on offer here, either that or she’s a pretty realistic faker — it’s a smouldering collision, and that’s about all that needs to be said. Kokotsu No Sekai has to be one of the finest gifts for the music fan in search of that killer oddity. First 180 gram vinyl reissue.

Panabrite

Soft Terminal

Panabrite is the project of Norm Chambers — not a household name to most people, but for those who have been reveling in his music for the last few years, he is absolutely adored. He is also, we should add, the man responsible for one of the most-loved synth albums of the last few years, although that’s a journey he took incognito and we just aren’t at liberty to divulge that identity quite yet. Some will be quick to chalk Soft Terminal up as just another Kosmische record, but that’s just the surface dressing. There is something deeper happening here: vivid, liquid dreams are sculpted into intricate fantasy landscapes, each layer revealing another aspect of Chambers’ production prowess. The thing with Chambers, is that he has an innate ability to write richly-textured, melodic compositions that have as much in common with vintage electronic library music as they do with minimal synth-pop and ’70s prog. Soft Terminal opens with “Rainbow Sequence” and “Index Of Gestures.” The former remains understated, moving simply and slowly while pulling open the curtain on the rest of the album. With “Index Of Gestures,” Chambers opens up the sequencers and lets them fly. Dizzying passages resonate and when the piece finally feels like it will lift off, he tightens the reins and dives straight into an underwater sequence. But that’s only a small part of the story. “Janus” opens with finger-picked guitar arrangements augmented with synth chords and rising leads. The guitars return on “Sound Softly” while Chambers’ ghostly, robotic vocals float away unscathed. On “Beta Axis Terminal,” pointillist tones flutter in and out before sharp, sequenced chord progressions overtake them. As the piece continues to build, vocoder hovers above thickened basslines and you feel lost in a dystopian sci-fi novel. But ultimately, Chambers’ pop sensibilities are most evident on the mini-masterpiece, “Camembert Symphony.” Pushed along by the constant thrum of a drum machine, multiple melodies are interwoven, wrapping themselves tightly around you. Each soaring synth glues the song deeper into your mind before fading away into the sonic ether. Cut to vinyl at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Limited to 500 copies only.

Daphne Oram

The Oram Tapes Volume One

2CD version. Daphne Oram, founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, died in 2003 leaving a colossal archive of reel-to-reel tapes and documents behind. This important collection of material eventually made its way to Goldsmiths College, London, who have been administering it on behalf of the Daphne Oram Trust for the last few years. The collection holds over 400 tapes made by Oram during her lifetime, and 211 of those have been archived and catalogued by the college so far. The Daphne Oram Tapes: Volume One is the result of almost two years spent trawling through the archive in an attempt to piece together a coherent document of one of the most pioneering and genuinely experimental characters in electronic music history. Although some of Oram’s recordings have surfaced on the Oramics compilation (YOUNGAM 001LP), this compilation reveals a complex, dark and sometimes disturbing body of work which has, until now, been partially obscured by the more recognizable Radiophonic bleeps and whirrs the Workshop is best known for. This first volume focuses on Oram’s love of experimental forms, of musique concrète, of the science and mystery of sound and composition. It comes at a time when her work is only just starting to gain wider acknowledgment in scholarly as well as popular circles. The “Oramics” machine (the first electronic musical instrument in history to be designed and built by a woman) has gone on display at the Science Museum in London, an important step in what will no doubt be a sustained effort to assert Oram’s rightful position as one of the most important figures in modern music. Working through the archive has been a life-changing experience, revealing a wealth of musical treasures that include recordings and sound effects made for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and Jack Clayton’s The Innocents, all the way through to field recordings made in Africa. This first volume, put together with the help of Goldsmiths and Daphne’s family, is the first in a planned series that will, for the first time, make Oram’s most important and personal recordings available for public consumption. The audio has been carefully mastered and cut by Lupo at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Deluxe 2CD edition comes in a 6-panel oversized digipak.

Voices From the Lake

Voices From the Lake

Repressed. Voices From The Lake is an intensely personal project borne out of the long-standing friendship between two Italian DJ/producers, Donato Dozzy and Neel. The project extends and deepens their explorations of ambient techno, with an emphasis firmly placed on the “techno” component. Listening to Voices From The Lake is an immersive experience, as the textured beats and carefully-crafted rhythms have a deeply hypnotic effect. The open, fluid structure of the music gives it an organic, natural feel, transporting you to more peaceful surroundings. With the music of Voices From The Lake there is a completely natural progression and flow, nothing is forced or hurried. The sounds develop and unfold at their own pace, creating a powerful sense of tranquility. The genesis of the Voices From The Lake album can be found in the mountains of Japan, where the duo made their live debut at The Labyrinth festival in 2011. This album recreates and refines that performance.

Freddie McGregor

Bobby Bobylon

Freddie McGregor is a fan favorite and one of reggae’s most consistent recording and touring artists. Freddie McGregor’s Studio One debut, Bobby Bobylon is considered one of the key ingredients for a great reggae record collection. It was produced by Studio One founder Clement Dodd, who produced, tutored, and nurtured an astouding number of top reggae stars – past and present – including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Marcia Griffiths, the Skatalites, Dennis Brown, Alton Ellis, Toots & The Maytals, Horace Andy, Sugar Minott, and many more. Now more than 25 years later BOBBY BOBYLON is back in print with the original ten tracks and eight additional singles. 1205080041 Marc Houle Undercover New New Audio CD Items & Things 2012-03-27 Marc Houle has been famous for his releases on Richie Hawtin’s M_nus label. Now the U.S. producer unleashes his brand-new album on his own imprint Items & Things (which is co-owned by Magda and Troy Pierce). Undercover is a double departure. His last album, Drift (MINUS 098CD/LP) was on M_nus, and his label, Items & Things, was a M_nus sub-label. He’s now left the label, and Items & Things stands on its own two feet. With this new-found freedom, Marc’s synth-driven techno sound continues to grow, evolve and surprise. Nowhere is this growth more evident than in the tracks that make up Undercover. Things kick off with Hearing,” which has a bassline that drives like a vintage Mercedes shifting gears on the Autobahn as it picks up speed. The synths, with their soft melody, let you know how smooth the suspension is while a metallic voice whispers in your ear from the back seat. “Undercover” is a case study in the deep and moody side of old school Chicago house. “Juno 6660″ sounds like what could have happened if early Warp artists like LFO and Sweet Exorcist had grown up on NYC freestyle rather than Detroit techno. “Very Bad” is actually very good, so Marc must be referring to something else entirely. “Bink” sounds like it’s from an old music box that’s been wound up just a little too far, held steady only by 4/4 beat, acid house claps and bouncy bass. On “Am Am Am,” Marc takes things in a bit of an industrial direction. Not the industrial of Nitzer Ebb and Einstürzende Neubauten, but rather, a construction site buried deep inside an unsettling dream. When “Mooder” drops, you wake up slowly and find yourself back on the dancefloor. The track’s driving rhythm and pitter-pat toms keep things moving underneath the track’s ever-dreamy pads. The album concludes with “Under The Neath,” which succeeds in taking things even deeper while at the same time unearthing Marc’s roots in the sound of Detroit techno. With influence and inspiration from such diverse sources, Undercover carves out a distinctive flow that is all his own.

The mission of Analog Africa is clear: searching in dusty warehouses for forgotten music to keep it alive. All tracks have been officially licensed, usually from the artists who label-head Samy Ben Redjeb also met with for detailed research. He conducted 16 interviews in various cities in Benin and Togo with artists, producers and sound engineers to reconstruct the history of the ’70s music scene for the booklet which also includes many rare photographs directly received from the artists. Like most modern music in French-speaking West African countries, the music of Benin and Togo was influenced by a few main musical currents: Cuban, Congolese and local traditional music, as well as Chanson Française. Additionally, the geographical location of Benin and Togo — sandwiched between Ghana and Nigeria — exposed Beninese and Togolese musicians to highlife music. The cultural and spiritual riches of traditional Beninese music had an immense impact on the sound of Benin’s modern music. Benin is the birth place of Vodun (or, as it is known in the West, Voodoo), and some of the rhythms used during traditional rituals — sakpata, sato, agbadja, tchenkoumé and many others — were fused to soul and Latin music as early as the mid-’60s and later to funk. That fusion is the essence of this compilation. In the late ’60s and early ’70s, rock and soul music started creeping into the region. In particular, the music of James Brown and Johnny Halladay became immensely popular with university students. It was then that the music scene in Benin really started to take off. What made this musical revolution even more interesting is that most of the musicians could not read music. Often the music they made sounded one semi-tone away from being out of tune, but somehow they always managed to bring all the elements together into something new and exciting. One of the greatest bands of their era, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, who are featured on this compilation, took the Afro sound to another level by showing their musical versatility in many forms. Although they were consciously copying Western artists, they would always inject a dose of psychedelic Afro grooves that would make their music unmistakably Beninese. Their biggest song, “Gbeti Madjro” is believed to have revolutionized the music industry in Benin in the ’70s when the country went through a period of political turmoil. The song is full of raw breaks and hypnotic rhythms, as well as screams à la James Brown. After this song, many bands in Benin started screaming on their recordings, hence the title of this compilation. Latin-influenced sounds are present on this compilation, too. Ouidah, a city on the Atlantic coast of Benin, is home to a large Brazilian community, or, as they are called in Benin, “Agoudas.” Members of that community are descendents of slaves who returned from Brazil at the end of the 19th century. Their dances and songs are still being performed and fused into the traditional Beninese rituals. That, too, can be heard in modern Beninese music. The proximity of the giant neighbor Nigeria can be heard on the track “Djanfa Magni” which features the amazing trumpeter/ saxophonist Tidjani Koné fronting the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Koné, whose career started in Mali as the founder and band leader of the Rail Band de Bamako, had played with Fela Kuti for a short while, hence the strong Afrobeat influence. There are countless stories to be discovered in the extremely well-researched booklet and the music is truly mind-blowing. So delve into the forgotten raw and psychedelic Afro sounds from ’70s Benin and Togo and experience the African Scream Contest.

Buried Life

REISSUED!!! MEDICINE was formed in Los Angeles in 1990 by guitarist/producer BRAD LANER as a means for marrying raw experimental textures with classic psychedelic pop song craft. Considered by many to be the foremost American purveyors of what some called Shoegaze or Dreampop, Medicine were one of the few U.S. bands on Creation Records and highly unlikely residents of Rick Rubin’s American Recordings where they released three LPs and many EPs between 1992 and 1995. At the time, these records elicited confused head scratching from most and ecstatic devotion from some. Despite Medicine’s willful obscurity, they subversively reached mainstream consciousness via their appearance in the 1994 film (and its #1 soundtrack album), The Crow. Medicine imploded in 1995 and Brad Laner has gone on to release an ongoing series of solo LPs and guest appearances on albums such as the current M83 album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, Brian Eno’s Another Day On Earth and Caribou’s The Milk of Human Kindness. 20 years on, these original two records by Medicine are still a bracing sonic slap in the face. Filled with surprises and strange detours, both beautifully melodic and harshly experimental, these reissues are lovingly presented with a complete set of vintage non-LP B-sides and many archival curiosities for those who wish to delve deeper. Amps for Christ & Woods

Woods/Amps for Christ

Shrimper Records has a long-standing tradition, going back to the early years of the label, of its artists collaborating with one another—from John Davis and Lou Barlow’s Folk Implosion to Franklin Bruno and John Darnielle’s Extra Glenns / Lens, with dozens of other examples in between. This split between Woods and Amps for Christ began as an idea for a 7-inch single, but grew into a full-length LP featuring four songs by each artist and an additional collaborative track. While Woods and Amps for Christ explore a lot of the same land mass, each turns over different rocks and shards of glass. And even though the two work independently from one another, listeners will hear the sublime manner in which the LP’s two sides (or the harsh, tinny digital skree of the MP3s for you 20th century types, dig your irony) complement one another both musically and lyrically. Check out the ESP interplay of Henry Barnes and Jeremy Earl when together or separated by coasts.

Nate Hall

Great River

The debut solo release from Nate Hall, the driving force behind US Christmas, A Great River captures a brief, impulsive moment. Recorded in a single March evening, it is as pure and honest as music gets. The songs are regretful of the bad times, hopeful of times to come, and respectful of the great power that causes all thing to be. Reflecting a lifetime spent with the echoes of Dylan, Young, Petty, Springsteen and Van Zandt, A Great River draws from the rich musical history of America and the melancholy of Appalachia, and harnesses the “electric vacuum roar” of guitar slingers past and present. “The first time I heard Nate Hall’s voice I knew that I was hearing something that would haunt me forever. The unmistakable sound of mountains’ wind and the desperation and anguish of truth and experience. Authenticity isn’t something you can acquire. Either you are or you are not. Nate’s work shows a depth of heart and a pure channeling that you won’t come across ten times in your life.” —Scott Kelly (Neurosis)

Sic Alps

Pangea Globe

We was spending time with SIC ALPS the other day—staying inside, playing sides—and we got on a Tronics run. Sic Alps ain’t collectors or anything…they know their stuff, but not to the point where they live in a museum. Be that as it may, those old Tronics singles are all right by the stereo, pretty much like a part of the décor. And the same goes within the Sic sound as well. Maybe a secret weapon we’re revealing here, but they’ve got more rocks just like it in the quiver, don’t worry. And it’s not like you’re gonna find any of those originals for less than like a hundred pounds of flesh and blood, shit. We did hear tell of a couple of reissues just recently—power to you, living in a world of affordable Tronics recs! But enough about Tronics! We’re not talking about them, we’re talking about a sweet and hot mini record of Tronics songs deuced and reduced by the one and the only Sic Alps! Yeah. So here’s a day’s Sic time put in one night, four songs worth—blathered and slaved over, and tinted in the mix for awesome effect. Some beats get softened, some are solidified with march-force pressure, tempos run a bit faster/slower in general…all informed by a fire/passion for the game that those guys and these guys play. Like when the Stones covered Chuck. Love backed by force indeed. “Pangea Globe” it’s called

Mi Ami

Decade

With ITAL and MAGIC TOUCH becoming viable dance outlets for DANIEL MARTIN-MCCORMICK and DAMON PALERMO, it felt as though the art-punk band, MI AMI might fade into obscurity. Couple the budding careers with transcontinental friendships in San Francisco and Brooklyn and a follow-up to Dolphins seemed unlikely. Mi Ami lives on with the help of 100% Silk, a fitting home for the mutations of the duo. When third member and bassist Jacob Long left the band, Mi Ami began it’s descent into the deeper disco excursions and got plenty weirder—see, Dolphins. The band’s latest transmission, “Time Of Love,” runs a pulsing house sleight-of-hand before chitz-chitz-chitzing into the electric lights of disco. At 11-minutes in jam time, Martin-McCormick and Palermo let the vibe dominate and keep their vocal musings to rhythmic haunts. We can officially declare Mi Ami a dance project, rather than attach filthy addendum’s like ‘art’ or ‘punk’.”—Impose

Marley, Stephen

Revelation – Pt. 1 The Root of Life

Stephen Marley makes his return with the first of a two part album compilation with Revelation part 1: The Root of Life. Son of the infamous Bob Marley, the reggae artist already has Revelation Part 2: The Fruit of Life recorded and ready to go for a fall release. With The Root of Life, Marley hopes to show the root of reggae music, and bring a new generation into the discovery of “roots reggae”. Marley has already designated the album’s follow up Fruit of Life to showcase a more “electric feel”.The first track off the album “Made in Africa” has Marley’s vocals backed with the cast of Fela and rustic percussion, the later a feature throughout the album. Also featured on the track is rapper Wale who lends his tribute to “mama aftrica”. “Jah Army” is the first single off The Root of Life and features Marley’s brother Damian “Jr Gong Marley” in a timeless hard driving roots reggae tribute to Rastafarian beliefs. The track also features Buju Banton who also does not fail to deliver. Marley’s follow up single “No Cigarette Smoking” is a romantic reggae ballad that features the sultry vocals of Guyanese/Canadian singer Melanie Fiona. Together, Marley and Fiona deliver a memorable lovers-rock track that even made its debut on top of the iTunes reggae charts at number one. – theroxyonsunset.com

Aphex Twin

Selected Ambient Works II

Aphex Twin’s 1994 masterpiece Selected Ambient Works Volume II includes barely anything resembling a beat or any sign of typical song structure, yet the album continues to garner adulation generally reserved for holy music. Fans have been testifying on its behalf for nearly two decades, as if it were capable of curing ills or healing the soul. Its synthetic construction belies the intuitive, human, melancholic and uplifting nature of the music. Some have speculated the album was intended by Aphex Twin’s Richard D. James as a farce, as if its über-minimalism was a joke played on an electronic community that relied so heavily on the beat; an expectation-defying statement from ambient-house’s young hero. The album induces varied responses and often from the same person. A listener may go from being incredulous to drenched in tears within the span of a single track. Music critic Frank Owen described the music as “veering between an eerie beauty and an almost nightmarish desolation.” James himself described it as “like standing in a power station on acid.” The album’s raw emotional power is built upon the influences of Brian Eno, Erik Satie, Steve Reich, Terry Riley and The Orb. Each of its tracks has an elegiac and desolate feel far removed from the tooth-rattling, drill-’n’-bass or abstract electronica for which James was originally known. The soft, nimble flow leaves one in a tranquilized state. Throughout the album, James resists the temptation to layer the sound with beats or samples. Instead, he relies on swathes of sound and harmonics and almost-implied pulses. When the music does incorporate subtle industrial sounds, rhythmic drums or muted samples, it is only to affect a menacing feel in the textures. Remarkably, for an album that is often perceived as difficult, Selected Ambient Works Volume II is quite accessible. Featured in films, commercials and video games, the music continues to offer an entry point for listeners new to the ambient genre while remaining a classic touted by connoisseurs. Fully licensed vinyl edition of US CD.

Cross Stitched Eyes

Decomposition

Decomposition, the second full-length by US / UK / German collective Cross Stitched Eyes, follows in the tradition of anarchist punk and death rock (Rudimentary Peni, Cortex, The Mob, and Killing Joke). Embracing the many irrational and visceral shades of this style’s darkest corners, the album decidedly rejects traditional copy-and-paste guidelines of musical conformity with a puncturing attitude. The harsher side of Cross Stitched Eyes derives directly from the band’s artistic influences and its deconstructed presentation. Decomposition’s leadoff track “We Follow” evokes reactions to seemingly unchanging lifestyles with a vitriolic diatribe. Others like “Animated Corpse” and “Earth’s Defiant” display a lyrical depth seldom heard these days. At times benign, at others aggressive, Decomposition explores the complicated relationship between dark and light. Repeated spins are unavoidable. Cross Stitched Eyes features members of Zygote, Alaric, U.K. Subs, Smart Pills, Anger of Bacteria and Endrophobia. Don’t judge them by their other activities because they all bring a special component to this multinational collective. Tim Shapland produces all the band’s recordings and captures the urgency of their sound; he also shreds on the guitar. Jason Willer drives the beat and his vocals shape the songs, leading with the direction of an intuitive scavenger on the hunt. Steve Daniel anchors the low-end rhythmic components with an industrious attitude that is uniquely his own.

Television

S/T

Rarely does a legendary band break up, reunite 14 years later, and proceed to make an album nearly as strong as their previous work but, in 1992, New York legends TELEVISION did just that, with their eponymous 3rd album. The trick, TOM VERLAINE, RICHARD LLOYD & Co. realized, was not to try to sound like 1978 Television, but instead to embrace where the last decade had taken them, and make a new sound, still distinctly Television, but also distinctly not a sad attempt to relive past glories. A great record from a legendary band.

Delta Swamp Rock Volume Two (Sounds From The South: At The Crossroads Of Rock, Country And Soul)

Featuring The Allman Brothers, Dan Penn, Leon Russell, Tony Joe White, Johnny Cash, Bobbie Gentry, Big Star, Link Wray, Area Code 615 and loads more! Delta Swamp Rock is an interstate southern road-trip through the United States of America where country, rock and soul met at the crossroads – an exploration of the musical and cultural links between the cities of Memphis, Muscle Shoals and Nashville in the 1960s and 70s. At the start of the 1970s, a new type of music emerged out of the southern states of Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi and Florida. Southern rock, the creation of young blue-collar white Americans, blended rock, soul, country and blues music together to present a new vision of the south – a post-civil rights southern identity complete with a celebration of the regions natural landscape and its way of life. The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd epitomised the definitive southern rock groups – a mixture of blues-rock and country with a southern rebelliousness and attitude. Unfortunately both The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd were to be struck by tragedy, which would affect the movement’s rise and fall. The backstory to southern rock is the fact that a number of the people involved in its creation had been central to the production of southern soul music in the 1960s mainly in Memphis, Tennessee, and the small town of Muscle Shoals (population around 10,000) deep within the bible-belt, liquor-free, deeply segregated state of Alabama, creating 100s of R&B hits on an almost daily basis. Here in Muscle Shoals, with its proximity to Memphis and Nashville, an all-white group of in-house musicians, (famously referred to by Lynyrd Skynyrd in the song ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ as the ‘Swampers’), created countless classic soul records for the likes of Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Clarence Carter and more during the 1960s. This album charts the rise and fall of southern rock from its funky swamp roots in southern soul to its phenomenal success in the first-half of the 1970s, including its influence on Nashville’s ‘outlaw’ country and tracing it right back to the arrival of rock and roll in the 1950s – the first meeting of black and white American music at the crossroads. – Label Description

Long considered their masterwork, Here Comes Everybody is post-punk at its lushest and most alluring. Roomrunner

Super Vague

Nirvana did it, Chavez did it, with a good deal more ingenuity in arrangements (and they continue to do it when reunion offers coax them out of retirement). Jawbox did it, Drive Like Jehu did it, the Foo Fighters did it (albeit better then than now), Torche continues to do it (though it remains to be seen if they remember how to), and now Roomrunner is doing it, rolling a grungy, inside-out duct tape ball of hiss over unsuspecting crowds, with room for giant chords that allow everything else in the tracks to hang in place.Super Vague is just four songs to the EP’s six, and includes a download code for a live set to pad out the length and justify the cost. The band does a better job of addressing the sameness that weighs down the EP, while leaving their formula basically unchanged. The title track picks up where the tape leaves off, while “Undo” plays with a fast-break, opportunistic jangle that soon swells into another steamroller riff sesh. “No Wait” starts off big and gets even bigger, utilizing those same rhythmic progressions, either going up or down the scale, occasionally pushing a half-step higher in order to show how the song has grown outside the shape of its container. The brief noise blast of “Petrified” closes things out with a track from their demo, scaring everyone remaining out of the room.It ain’t broke; they’re not fixing it. This isn’t revisionism, it’s a revival, and Roomrunner seem to have it locked down. Look for them in a concert venue near you.By Doug Mosurock

represents recordings made by Charles Manson prior to the Tate-Labianca Murders. There was some speculation at the time that a record producer who had previously owned the Tate home, and who had earlier rejected Manson’s recordings, was the intended target. Every producer Manson had approached with his recordings ultimately received death threats at one time or another, and it was subsequently shown that Manson had targeted for assassination a number of famous recording artists whose only crime was their success.Recorded: 9/11/1967 Overdubs: 8/9/1968

Murphy’s Law

Best of Times

Murphy’s Law usher in the ’90s with a reinvigorated blast of their debauchery-laced brand of comedic punk. Stylistically, Murphy’s Law makes quite a jump on The Best of Times. The band did dabble in skacore long before it exploded, but was always pretty much a flat-out hardcore unit in the ’80s. The Best of Times finds Jimmy Gestapo and friends combining funk, reggae, ska, and hardcore into their own distinct brew, shedding any dogmatic restrictions applied to the standards of their genre in the ’80s. Production by Fishbone’s John “Norwood” Fisher and Philip “Fish” Fisher lends authenticity and diversity to The Best of Times, as does the added instrumentation by several members of Fishbone. Covers of James Brown and Stevie Wonder provide some insight into Murphy’s Law’s sometimes controversial and misunderstood affiliation with the skinhead faction, finally putting to rest any allegations that racism or fascism have anything to do with the band’s outlook. Although the group manages to shed this stereotype and expand musically on The Best of Times, the subject matter doesn’t otherwise stray too far from earlier work. Songs about pot, beer, girls, and cars showcase the glorious immaturity and quest for fun that pretty much define Murphy’s Law. When the band does get serious, which isn’t very often, it’s in the interest of unity and friendship. The title track is basically a fan tribute, thanking a small but loyal group of followers for the support that’s enabled Murphy’s Law to continue the party. The ska-tinged but heavy “1%” revels in the outcast-minded punk rock ethos, giving nod to those who embrace the good and bad of surfing the fringe of culture and society. Classic Murphy’s Law rage surfaces on “Harder Than Who,” an attack on the mindless aggression and competition that sometimes rule the hardcore scene.

Robert Rosen reads from BEAVER STREET: A History of Modern Pornography!

“Let’s begin with the personal. I worked in pornography as a magazine editor for 16 years, from 1983 to 1999. Among the titles I edited were D-Cup, High Society, Swank, Stag, Succulent, Sex Acts, Stacked, Plump & Pink, Buf, Black Lust, Lesbian Lust, Blondes in Heat, For Adults Only, and X-Rated Cinema. There were hundreds of others—it would be pointless to name them all. But if you’ve got some old porn mags stashed in your drawer, dig them out and take a look at the mastheads. My nom de porn was Bobby Paradise. Perhaps you recognize it.”-Robert Rosen

Robert Rosen a vet smut writer and editor has been in town all week doing readings at Left Bank and Shameless Grounds. We were lucky that he decided to stroll in, snuck a peak at our wares, and suspecting that he may be amongst like minds, struck up a conversation.

Now, we’ve got his great book instock (Tiff’s already half-way through) and we’ve set up this last minute reading for all our fave creeps to enjoy!

If your’e interested in hearing behind-the-scenes tales about Traci Lords, the beginnings of Free Phone Sex and other lascivious matter, get down here!

Of course, it’s free, and we’ll have some bevvys on hand, too.

Sewer Goddess / Mourner 10″ Now available!

Apop Records is proud to present “In The Cold of the Stabbing Doldrums…” – the new split 10” from Boston’s Sewer Goddess and Nashville’s Mourner. Combining raw, beat-driven power electronics and oppressive, ornamental doom, this slab of vinyl contains three tracks to carry you down the dark, looming path of isolation.

Sewer Goddess’ enigmatic approach to both noise & power electronics weaves undulating rhythm, echoing vocal wretch, and vile guitar riffery into a caustic cauldron of depravity. Akin to the likes of Steel Hook Prostheses and Twodeadsluts Onegoodfuck, Sewer Goddess’ Kristen Rose has risen to the top of contemporary heavy electronics, creating a rotting soundtrack for the 21st Century.

With crushing power, Mourner’s dynamic volley of squelching feedback, death march percussion, and cavernous wraith vocal attack lends itself to the school of doom forebearers, Burning Witch and Khanate. With atmospheric tension at a snail’s pace, Mourner is able to harness the haunting cacophony of Hell with blackened romanticism. Hopeless, putrid – this is organic depression in its purest form.

Recent Arrivals, Upcoming Events (Apop’s 8th Bday, Record Store Day) PARTY ZONE!

Hey y’all,

Been a long time and it looks like we’ve quite a bit to catch up on. So, take a seat, relax, and if it begins to feel like we’re vomiting a bit on ya, it’s because we are.  Blargh…  here it comes!!

APOP MOVIE NIGHTS in March continue to be violated by the slimy fists of VIDEO WASTELAND.  This Thursday the creepz bring  a wackadoo Shaw Brothers horror gem–THE BOXER’S OMEN

Kickboxer Chang Hung travels to Thailand seeking revenge on the Thai boxer that paralyzed his brother. While there, he begins experiencing terrible hallucinations, and further gets tangled ina web of Buddhism, spirit-fu, and black magic as he tries to undo a centuries-old curse on his family.

Hong Kong horror flicks don’t get much more batshit insane than 1983′s THE BOXER’S OMEN. It brings the candy-colored palette of Obayashi’s “House” but adds more magic, blood, maggots, and vomit. Much more vomit. (See! pukin’ all over yaz!)

The Wastelanders will be at the wheel through the rest of the month, so there’s more larfs to come. Then in April, in conjunction with a monthlong exhibition of Polish posters held at Fort Gondo, our good pal Chris Smentkoski will be curating a month of Polish films! Kieslowski, ‘toons and much more!  For more info and future updates,  check out Apop’s Movie Night page on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/apopmovies).

And snoop  VW’s groovy trailer HERE!

As always, Record Store Day and Apop’s Birthday month run concurrently to create a Spring-long series of pure mania.  We’re still hashing out the details for April 21st’s big explosion of records and music (and beer, duh!), but expect an itinerary within the next week. In the meantime, we can tell you that we’re moving the showcase to the great outdoors!  No more tackling happy moshers for maybe getting a little OOC–whoa, guys, you almost spilled yer PBR on the Cinema Sewers!–this year, get as wacky as you want. Also, we’re expanding hours of the showcase and will have exclusive RSD merch not available anywhere else! More to come with this mammerjammer.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ASSHOLES!

So, guess what? Apop turns 8 this year! Yep, crazzzzzzy. We’ve spent 5 good’uns in St. Louis on Cherokee and plan to celebrate SEVERAL TIMES. Concerts and instores with BOB BELLERUE, DIAMOND HYMEN, SISTER FUCKER (some fucked punk from Erin of HIGH CASTLE), LAUNDRY ROOM SQUELCHERS, SAM MCPHEETERS, and and and  THE BODY with THOU!!  Ick, better double-dose the caffeine, y’all ain’t gettin’ no rest!

Again, these details are currently being forged, but here’s the skeletal deets:

  • FRIDAY APRIL 13TH,  3PM - Instore with LAUNDRYROOM SQUELCHERS FREE!
  • SATURDAY  APRIL 21ST, 9AM-9PM – RECORD STORE DAY sale, concert, jam! FREE!
  • TUESDAY APRIL 23RD, 9PM  - SISTER FUCKER (OAKLAND, CA) + TBA @ EL LENADOR
  • TUESDAY MAY 1ST, 9PM – THE BODY (PROV, RI) / THOU (BATON ROUGE, LA) + TBA @ TBA
  • THURSDAY MAY 10TH,  9PM –  DIABLO (BOB BELLERUE) /  ISA CHRIST / MISTER MATTHEWS (OF TELECULT POWERS) + TBA
  • TUESDAY MAY 15TH, 7PM – SAM MCPHEETERS (BORN AGAINST, MENS RECOVERY PROJECT) book tour, FREE!
  • TUES MAY 22ND, 9PM –  DIAMOND HYMEN / NO MILK / DINNER MUSIC @ APOP RECORDS
Also, this week the Sewer Goddess 10″ will be making its debut, so watch out for news on that as well as updates on other Apop Releases. The Beatoffs play Genesis LP and Shaved Women 7″ should be out by May! (btw, East Coasters, catch SHAVED WOMEN on their June tour, you’d be a dummy to miss ‘em.)

Well, we’ve got loads of records to price, concerts to plan, and parties to start, so we’d better wipe our mouths and hold a little puke in for later! In the meantime, check out this week’s recent arrivals, which are incomplete even as I watch Zach Moroni price box after box of wax. Shit like the colored Neurosis reissues, Deranged merch, and filthy dirty noise cassettes!  Your best bet is to simply swing by Cherokee, hey you can get some tacos and ice cream while you’re at it!

OH! And we’re going to 2 rad shows at Floating Labs this week; we think you should be there!:

RECENT ARRIVALS!

Recent 7” Vinyl
author title, media (publisher) price notes
86 Mentality 86 Mentality, 7″ Record (Grave Mistake) $5.99 Another tough HarDCore band. These guys have a total gritty 1982 hardcore sound like Negative FX, early Agnostic Front or Negative Approach. Burly riffs and growled vocals. We played a house show with these guys in DC and it was like playing the graduation ceremony at a gladiator school. So aggro and pissed off! This would be great to listen to while you plot your revenge against your enemies and vanquish your foes. They did a tour with Dead Stop who also RAGE. DCHC 4 LIFE. – Havoc Records
86 Mentality On The Loose, 7″ Record (Grave Mistake) $5.99 With the long awaited follow up to 2004′s debut self-titled 7″ E.P., 86 MENTALITY are finally back at your jugular with six brand new tracks of tough as nails, skull splitting hardcore. You should know exactly what to expect, raging early 80′s influenced hardcore punk, with a healthy dose street punk/oi thrown into the mix for good measure. Guaranteed not to disappoint anyone who was into their first 7″ EP, these new tracks could arguably be their best material to date.
Allo Darlin’ Capricornia, 7″ Record (Slumberland Records) $5.98 First single off London-based band’s upcoming sophomore album• Follows 2010’s acclaimed self-titled debut on Fortuna Pop! Records• Sophisticated, intelligent jangle-pop that recalls The Go-Betweens, The Lucksmiths, Camera Obscura, etc.
Antisect Out From The Void EP, 7″ Record (Antisociety) $7.99 “Finally available again on vinyl. One of the masterworks of the early crust scene. A really influential and seminal record. Antisect started out more towards the anarcho punk sound and gradually took on more metal influence to help lay the groundwork for the sound we now know as crust. This 7″ was one of the cornerstones of the crust sound. Totally killer.” – HavocAntisociety reissue, pink vinyl.
Assembly of God Submission Obedience Denial, 7″ Record (Havoc) $4.99 “Assembly of God was a hardcore punk band from Oklahoma (none of the members lived in the same city, they all met in Oklahoma city to practice). Chad from Brother Inferior sang and played guitar, with the Drummer of Burnpile and the Bassist of Subsanity. Burnpile being a fast SEHC band, Subsanity a grind band and Brother Inferior a punk/hc band you can see that there are several different musical influences coming together on this release. That said, I would liken the sound mostly to the last Brother Inferior material, which was much faster and more aggressive than the earlier more anthemic stuff. Assembly of God recorded this 7″ and some comp tracks and sadly, broke up. They only played a few out of town shows, one of which was Thrash Fest 2. Chad went on to form the Levelling which took things into an even faster realm. As with all of Chad’s projects you can see that much thought was put into the lyrics. Chad has always approached issues from a very punk working man’s perspective. His no nonsense point of view makes for lyrics that hit the nail on the head every time.” – Havoc
AUK Rise b/w Where are Your Gods, 7″ Record (Tadpole) $5.99 “A new band by Ian from 80′s UK anarcho punk’s Alternative(crass records/southern records). AUK storm back with 2 brand new tracks ‘ Rise ‘ / ‘ Where Are Your Gods ‘, both combine the best elements of hardcore punk / metal and are filled with more melodic hooks that reach out to grab your attention. ‘ Rise ‘ sounds like it belongs in some disturbing H.P. Lovecraft novel of nightmarish destruction and hope. It’s lyrical phrasing is very much akin to Percy Bysshe Shelly and it’s grinding guitar and guttural roar ( worthy of any death metal band ), will surely have you gripped. The track ‘Where Are Your Gods ‘, sees religious dogma brought before the court, chewed up and spat back out, with all the venom of the accuser and leaves it’s pious christian alter, smashed and sprawling in the dirt.”
Aus-Rotten Fuck Nazi Sympathy, 7″ Record (Havoc) $4.99 “Havoc Records best selling record to date with over 20,000 copies pressed. Aus Rotten was one of the best punk bands or the 90′s for two reasons. 1. They play excellent hardcore punk in the tradition of Discharge, the Varukers and Chaos UK 2. They make the connection between punk and radical politics in a clear and understandable way. That is to say, Aus Rotten’s politics are right up front, but phrased in an accessible fashion rather than obtuse intellectualisms or a PC sermon. Aus Rotten’s popularity brings to mind the days of Discharge, Conflict and the Subhuman when political punk bands were just as well known and liked as commercial bands. Fuck Nazi Sympathy is a challenge to the punk scene not to tolerate Nazis and Fascism in the scene. Tuesday, May 18, 1993 is a stark indictment of the genocide in Bosnia showing how little humanity has learned from the horrors of the Holocaust. Aus Rotten also released the Anti-Imperialist 7″ which has recently been repressed as well as a split 7″ with Naked Aggression. A full length LP on Tribal War followed in 1996. The LP features a fold out poster sleeve, extensive information and a copy of Rotten Propaganda, singer Dave’s anarchist newspaper. Once again this sort of packaging and creative attempt to expose the listener to a different political view brings to mind the days of Crass, Discharge, and Conflict. Aus Rotten has toured Europe, Japan and the United States. Aus Rotten released “The Rotten Agenda” LP on their own Rotten Propaganda label in 2001. Aus Rotten broke up in 2001. Singer Dave is now in Behind Enemy Lines while Corey and Eric are in Caustic Christ. Rich who played drums on this 7″ is in All Systems Fail.” – Havoc
Bastard Controlled in the Frame, 7″ Record (540 Records) $7.99 ONLY OFFICIAL REISSUE OF THE ONLY SEVEN INCH BY THE BEST JAPANESE BAND OF ALL TIME.
Bastards 10 Track EP, 7″ Record (Hohnie Records) $7.99 “Got a handful of this re press of one of the all time classics of Finnish hardcore. As far as I know this was a limited re issue and these are some of the last copies. Amazing raw Finnish hc, personally I think this is the Bastards best material.” – Havoc
Black Market Baby Potential Suicide b/w Youth Crimes, 7″ Record (Dr. Strange) $6.49 This is a reissue of this classic CD punk single.
Career Suicide SARS EP, 7″ Record (Deranged) $6.49 “The ‘sars’ 7″, their 2nd 7″. After a bleak spring in quarantine, these guys decided to pick up their gear and get some new tracks on wax, and the result is nothing short of greatness. Yet another great local band making their mark in Canadian punk history. 4 new tracks of snotty pissed hardcore punk. They have been rightfully compared to Boston’s FU’s, Angry Samoans, and early Dischord titles. Features Jonah from FUCKED UP on the guitar.” – Deranged
Caustic Christ Caustic Christ EP, 7″ Record (Havoc) $4.99 “After Aus Rotten broke up, Corey and Eric decided to start a new band with a more hardcore direction. Adding Bill Chamberlain of the Pist/React/Broken on guitar solidified their line up. Tragedy struck when their first drummer was injured in a car accident and was no longer able to play drums. Enter a borrowed drummer from Submachine (later to become the permanent drummer) and the result is a band whose components are some of the most experienced and dedicated punk musicians in the Eastern US. Corey gave me a Caustic Christ demo when he was in town with the Unseen and I liked it. But when I saw them open for DS 13 at Mr. Roboto in Pittsburgh I knew I had to put out a record by this band. Caustic Christ play sick heavy hardcore that I would best describe as a cross between early Corrosion of Conformity and Swedish crust core like Wolfbrigade and Skitsystem. Fans of crust and fast 80′s style hardcore will no doubt both like this 7″ as it bridges the two genres perfectly. Lyrics deal with aleination from dead end jobs, destruction of the environment and the horror of everyday life in 21st century society.” – Havoc
Civil Disobedience In A Few Hours of Madness, 7″ Record (Havoc) $4.99 Civil Disobedience formed in Michigan around 1992. Their demo tape sold several hundred copies through Profane Existence mail order. I saw Civil Disobedience when they opened for Destroy in Detroit and was so impressed I asked them if they would release a record on my new label. The 7″ which resulted is arguably Civil Disobedience’s best material. Powerful hardcore with speed and power but not exactly thrash. The two vocalists switch back and forth rapid fire. I would compare this to Conflict around Ungovernable Force but really its totally unique. This has been one of our most consistent selling releases even though it has been out for over ten years now. A lot of people tell me it is their favorite record of the 90′s or even favorite record ever.
Civil D. later put out an LP on Profane Existence with a slightly different line up. Civil Disobedience broke up in early 1998. – Havoc
Cluster Bomb Unit …And The Dirty Little Weapons, 7″ Record (Havoc) $4.99 Germany’s political hardcore outfit CLUSTER BOMB UNIT are back with five songs to raw, unapologetic hardcore punk rock pressed on a grey marbled vinyl 7” record. Limited quantities available. (Havoc)
Code 13 A Part of America Died Today, 7″ Record (Havoc) $4.99 After several tours across America Code 13 suffered its first major line-up change when drummer Criminal Shane was arrested and incarcerated in Wisconsin. Josh from the band Inveigh was recruited to fill in and would end up staying with the band for a year, two tours and a 7″. Fast powerful hardcore, period. Over the years Code 13 became part of a burgeoning scene in Minneapolis, along with bands like Civil Disobecience, State of Fear, Misery, Murderers and Assrash. To show our appreciation to the kids who supported us we did 100 copies on clear vinyl with a screenprinted camouflage cover for our record release show. Of the three 7″s most people consider this to be Code 13′s strongest material. The grind/crust influence had faded somewhat by this point and the approach more of a fast hardcore style. Some reviewers had a hard time with the mix of styles, that Code 13 couldn’t easily be nailed down as crust, thrash, or street punk. But it was our goal from the start to mix up styles and still have drive an energy.
Culo Military Trend, 7″ Record (Deranged) $6.49 From MRR332: ‘This ripper will soon be filed under my “this fuckin’ rules!” category, never to be picked out during a desperate purging of the shelves. Listening to this gives me comfort in knowing that the torch of straight-up, yet distinctive hardcore is being passed along through good hands. These dudes throw down fast and frantic traditional HC that sounds like a bit of JERRYS KIDS mixed with Italian hardcore and a dose of fucking whatever it is that sounds just right to these ears. Four tracks and all of them are amazing. And now I’m getting a strange record collection sensation that my life will hereby be incomplete until I track down a copy of this EP for myself. Get this!Clear Grey Vinyl
Damage Deposit Straight to the Bottom, 7″ Record (Havoc) $4.99 Review from Razorcake: “Laced-up-tight pugilistic hardcore that covers lyrical topics like Lynyrd Skynyrd, ninjas, puppies, and testicle punches, all stewed in the rather serious gravy of socio-political consciousness. But in a good way; if Damage Deposit comes across as anything, it’s that they’re utterly sincere. These guys, unlike a band like For the Worse, are not likely to ever be caught singing hardcore odes to their toilet. I might be going out on a limb here, but I think they sound a little bit like Good Clean Fun at times – maybe a little faster and, of course, with frowny-face tattoos instead of smiley-face ones. Musically, it’s tight and confrontational traditional hardcore and, for me, with hardcore it’s not really who does something “new” with it (because that too often turns into emo or metal), it’s just who breaths fucking fire back through its veins and gets it stomping and raging again like the pissed-off brute that it is. Damage Deposit does that. If you’re at all familiar with Felix Havoc then this is probably exactly like the sort of band that you’d expect him to be in. Top notch.”
Desperat Suicide Attack, 7″ Record (World Funeral) $7.49 From the frozen wastelands of Sweden comes a powerhorse of a 7”. The much-loved D-beat/rock-n-roll style is in full effect here, not unlike a stripped-down AUKTION. And much like another excellent d-beat band I reviewed in this issue – UNLEARN – this band has risen above the terrible trappings and clichés of this easily-tired rawpunk genre. Just by writing lyrics about a diverse array of topics that are actually relevant, they have blown most of the competition out of the water. Each song on this 7” is about something relevant. The title track talks about suicide bombers around the world, brainwashed by religious leaders to kill themselves and others for their religion. The next song, Love Song is a song that gives proper respect to those activists and groups who do their part to make a better world (when was the last time you heard a dis-song encouraging support for activists, and even giving hope for a brighter future?). Side B starts with Children Should Play, which goes after those who profit from child labor in sweat shops, which is a topic that seems to have fallen out of favor with the punks lately. Lastly, we have Computer Control, a song about civil liberties and loss of privacy. Let me sum this up – this is a great record. It has everything I look for in one package – simple, yet effective cover art. Great sounding songs – not too raw, but certainly not overproduced by any stretch. Political lyrics and no fucking clichés. Let’s have more of this more often. – Profane ExistenceREPRESS, TRANSPARENT GOLD VINYL
Destroy! Burn This Racist System Down!, 7″ Record (Havoc) $4.99 Destroy was a political grind/crust hardcore band from Minneapolis. Formed in 1988 and continuing through several line-up changes until 1994. Releases include a demo in 1989. Total Fucking Chaos 7″ on Relapse in 1991. Split 7″ with Disrupt on Reduced to Slavery Records 1991. Burn this Racist System Down 7″ 1992. Necropolis LP on Sound Pollution in 1994. Split 7″ with Disturb on MCR records 1994. The full story of Destroy is told on the liner notes of the Necropolis LP. Destroy was contemporaneous with bands like Disrupt, Extreme Noise Terror, Napalm Death and Doom. Fast political hardcore with grind and metal influences. In my opinion this 7″ was our best work. Destroy lived the Chaos when it really meant something. The Destroy material was all compiled onto the CD version of the Necropolis LP on Sound Pollution. In 2002 this was re released on Havoc as the Destroy Discography CD and contains all the recorded Destroy material with the exception of the 1989 demo. After Destroy broke up Mitch later played drums in the Murderers and Code 13. Felix sang in Code 13 and Damage Deposit. Nate plays guitar in Brainiol, Stormcrow and bass in Nigel Pepper Cock. Mark W. played in Disembodied and is now in Look Back and Laugh. – Havoc
Evans the Death Telling Lies, 7″ Record (Slumberland Records) $5.98 First single from UK indie-punk-pop band’s upcoming debut album• Follows a 2011 single on the Fortuna Pop! label• The group documents and channels the exuberance of youth via the prism of five pop music obsessives, gleaning inspiration from all the music with which they grew up. They draw as much from the lyrical dexterity of Morrissey and Jarvis Cocker as they do from the scuzzed-up melodic exuberance of early My Bloody Valentine and The Pixies.
Government Issue Make An Effort EP, 7″ Record (Dr. Strange) $6.99 This only has four songs, but boy do they blast! John Stabb sounds angrier than ever and Brian Baker’s guitar playing is so raunchy and LOUD it’s hard to believe he’s in Bad Religion now… Maybe he was trying to compete with John Barry (who played guitar on the Legless Bull EP).
‘Teenager In A Box’, which is about a friend who died in a car accident age eighteen (‘You were eighteen/now you’re a statistic’), is one of the most intense hardcore songs ever if you ask me. Stabb sings it like he can’t believe it really happened.
‘No Way Out’ and ‘Twisted Views’ may sound a little metallic (thanks to Brian Baker, who’s never been ashamed of his metal influences, just listen to Dag Nasty), but even those songs match up to anything by top-notch hardcore bands like Negative Approach and Urban Waste and what have you.
Of course G.I. ends it all with one of many versions of their signature tune, ‘Sheer Terror’. And yes, it’s by far my favorite version. Ok, I like Legless Bull and Boycott Stabb as much as the next guy, but THIS record, to me, is what punkrock is all about. Amen.

Government Warning Executed, 7″ Record (No Way / Grave Mistake) $5.99 Brand new 45 single to accompany the new full length. Recorded in the same session as PARANOID MESS. This was originally intended to be a European tour single but we just opted to make it a proper release instead. The title track charges through at varying speeds, musically taking cues from KINGS OF PUNK era POISON IDEA topped with Kenny’s biting vocal delivery, while the flip side backhands you with one quick ripper in standard GW fashion, followed up with a Battalion of Saints cover.
Heratys Helvettiin Ja Takaisin, 7″ Record (La Familia) $8.99 “This is blazing Svensk and Suomi Hardcore madness to the max. Six songs on black or on limited pink or purple vinyl. The limited copies include an awesome screenprinted inlay! Herätys really deliver the Scandinavian hardcore as it is ‘supposed’ to be and bring TOTALITÄR and old finish hardcore in mind. I just love it.” – La Familia Releases
Horros Horros EP, 7″ Record (Armotron) $6.49 “Dirty raw crust from Finland in the Doom/Extremne Noise Terror tradition.” – Havoc
Mole Hole The Cave In, 7″ Record (Lighten Up Sounds) $12.99 “Isolation does strange things to people. With these further transmissions from deep inside the hidey hole, the mysterious mole-man offers two huge and relentless tracks of 33 RPM shimmer-sludge. Just add Kyo-nishiki (Kyoto Autumn Leaves) for complete brain erasure. After the marathon delivery of the 92 minute opus “Pangea” cassette, this new 14 minute EP comes as a bit of a relief for all of the long-form sissies in the room. Crushing bell tones and hissing demon breath driven deep through static repetition. Minimal /maximum 1/4″ fragments reborn into a new whole by securely fastening themselves end to end. This is very pure circular sound, please find a soft scrap of lumber to rub against your cheek. Limited edition of 30 unlabeled 7″ records come cut good and loud to high quality clear poly-carbonate, and beautifully packaged in an audiophile anti-static inner sleeve with eerie full color double transparency artwork featuring a woman’s smiling face dissolving into an opening in the foliage w/ hand numbered white vellum insert bearing very little useful information. Shine a light through her eyes from behind while listening at high volume and she may reveal the answers you seek. “Forrrtune for quarrrterrrs, I love quarrrterrrs…” Bummer-creep bangers for the new age.”
Primary Contributor-Bonnie Bonnie & Mariee, 7″ Record (Spiritual Pajamas) $14.98 Collaborative release features two originals and two covers• Limited edition of 2000 copies• Supporting musicians include members of Bright Eyes, Beachwood Sparks, Jenny Lewis, A Perfect Circle, Zwan, The Entrance Band and more

Shep and Me Shep and Me [Lathe-cut 7" Ltd. to 30], 7″ Record (Lighten Up Sounds) $11.99 “In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of its initial release on cassette,
Lighten Up Sounds is proud to present this limited edition lathe cut 7″ containing newly re-mastered selections from the maiden voyage self-titled “Shep and Me” album. These raw recordings captured Matthew Himes in Austin TX 2001, laying down linear/non linear plink-plunkers and no-fidelity folk-brut jewels. Pot and pan clatter, blown out mouth harp cut-ups, suitcase percussion, hand me down ukelele, bicycle handle-bar trumpet, skipping records, AM radio static, heavy-handed tape manipulations, and generally stomping around the house like a crazy person while the beans bubbled on the range. Documented using the beloved “bounce” method to a series of boom-boxes, these fledgling jammers have finally been grooved to wax more than a decade later for posterity. Ultra-limited edition of 30 7″ records, cut at 33rpm to high quality clear poly-carbonate with black and white labels re-creating the original album artwork. Comes double bagged in audiophile anti-static inner and crystal polyethylene outer sleeves w/ two sided red vellum insert. Crude and beautiful.
This is how it all started.” – Lighten Up Sounds

Ava Luna Ice Level, Audio CD (Infinite Best) $16.85 Brooklyn’s Ava Luna is the rare band that needs to be heard to be believed. In the band’s hazy, floaty, post-TV-on-the-Radio-maybe conceit, post-punk grooves, soaring soul harmonies and classic indie detachment join forces for something beautiful, infectious and damn-near indescribable. The twisted brainchild of Carlos Hernandez, the son of a soul DJ and occasional producer of bands like Fucked Up, Ava Luna is the sum of a lot of somehow congruous parts. The minimal drums / bass / synth lineup kicks out the most skeletal of Ze Records-era post-punk / nu-funk; a chorus made up of three backing singers add a razor-sharp doo-wop lilt; the sweat-soaked Hernandez is up front stirring soul like Jamie Liddell or a James Chance for the Misshapes age.”—Christopher Weingarten, Village Voice

Burning Hearts Extinctions, Audio CD (Shelf Life) $13.99 “Burning Hearts second full-length album, Extinctions, is out now! All nine songs were written and recorded in the Ostrobothnian environment, which has proven to be fertile creative ground for Jessika and Henry. While Aboa Sleeping was a collection of early songs that were not intended to end up on an album, Extinctions was written as a consequence of many tragic stories that in a way or another touched the band. Quite a few of the songs are dedicated to people or creatures that no longer exist. Even if human tragedies inspired the writing, and death is present in nearly all the songs, the sound remains vivid and full of hope.”

Ital Hive Mind, Audio CD (Planet Mu) $15.98 Debut full-length from Daniel Martin-McCormick’s dance music alter-ego. Five-track, 42-minute release plays like an electronic update on 70s-era German albums by Neu!, Cluster, Harmonia, etc. Current / former member of Mi Ami, Sex Worker and Black Eyes; released material on 100% Silk, Not Not Fun, Thrill Jockey, Dischord
Locrian and Mamiffer Bless Them That Curse You, Audio CD (Profound Lore) $14.98 Bless Them That Curse You is the anticipated collaboration between two of the most respected and forward-thinking bands in the experimental / progressive music realm.Chicago, Illinois’s Locrian craft epic waves of ambient noise mixed with elements of black metal and soundscape drone. The prolific group has assembled a mesmerizing and genre-defying body of work that continues to progress with each release.Founded by artist Faith Coloccia after the dissolution of her experimental project Everlovely Lightningheart, Mamiffer blends neoclassical piano with ambient electronic hums and reductionist metal dirge. Coloccia has collaborated with myriad musicians in the past but found a steadiness with her Mamiffer co-conspirators Travis Rommeriem and her partner Aaron Turner (of Isis / Hydra Head Records fame).Bless Them That Curse You fuses the two bands’ unique styles in an elegant and beautiful marriage. Adding layer upon layer of sound to color a vast sonic canvas, Locrian and Mamiffer exceed all expectations, delivering a whole far greater than the sum of its parts. The album was recorded at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studios in Chicago and mixed by Randall Dunn in Seattle.
Mount Carmel Real Women, Audio CD (Siltbreeze Records) $14.98 For those swayed by the magisterial authenticity of Mount Carmel on their eponymous 2010 debut album: its follow-up Real Women finds the band honed and sharper, thus delivering what might be the best sophomore album released by an American blues-based power-trio since ZZ Top’s Rio Grande Mud.
Nods to Free, Humble Pie, even Trapeze can be sussed out in the mix, but at the end of the day, Real Women is straight-up Mount Carmel all the way. Searing leads, smokey vocals, thundering rhythms, cascading drums, hyperbolic hyperbole… it’s all here. Mount Carmel brings back the spirit of 1973 like no one else. The only difference now is better weed and shittier barbiturates. It’s hands-down pure rock, no frills. Nary a retro contrivance is to be heard. These guys live it for real. Honest. So climb on board with Real Women and see what you’ve been missing. The results are astounding.
Sado-Nation Future Past, Present, Tense, Audio CD (Grand Theft Audio) $10.00 Compilation from the Portland punks with 1st EP, LP and more. CD and jewel case are in great shape.
Sutcliffe Jugend Blue Rabbit, Audio CD (Crucial Blast) $14.98 Appearing in the early ’80s as an offshoot of the legendary UK band Whitehouse, Sutcliffe Jugend was soon recognized as an equally confrontational and extreme purveyor of the early power electronics / industrial sound, producing on their early Come Organisation releases We Spit on Their Graves and Campaign some of the most abrasive and violent music ever. Since then, the group has pursued a unique sonic vision that combines transgressive subject matter—dark, cerebral musings on violence and sexual perversion—with brutal feedback and synthesizer damage. Recently, however, Sutcliffe Jugend has explored darker, more restrained (at least on a sonic level) sounds alongside their harsher work, and Blue Rabbit is the latest such offering, unfolding like a night-terror across the album’s eight tracks. For fans who are primarily familiar with the group’s harsher output on Come Org and Cold Spring, Blue Rabbit is a revelation; a seething, quasi-ambient nightmare that lingers with the listener, its creep factor enhanced by the unsettling paintings from band member Kevin Tomkins that make up the album art. One won’t find their trademark power electronics here, nor the dark throbbing industrial of 2011’s With Extreme Prejudice; this is a darker, more unsettling experience, saturated with an atmosphere of doom and smoldering violence, as if Sutcliffe Jugend were channeling the creaking dread of Nurse With Wound’s Salt Marie Celeste through a series of blood-freezing psychosexual nightmares.

Aaron Dilloway; Composer-Aaron Dilloway Modern Jester (Double Vinyl LP, Hanson Records, 2012), LP Record (Hanson Records) $32.00 With the exception of “Eight Cut Scars,” this is completely different from the cassette of the same name, though every second does contain subliminal messages (some things are just too good to let go of). “Hyper-focused [and] monolithic,” according to All Music Guide, “harrowing, but strangely beautiful,” while East Village Radio describes it as hallucinatory and sprawling. Acursed Tenneln i Ljusets Slut, LP Record (Prank) $10.99 “Brutal, devastating metallic hardcore from Sweden, over loaded with feedback as it blasts track after track of savagely shouted, throttling hardcore that slows only to deliver mid-tempo crushing blows. ACURSED, like many of the classic Swedish punk bands, are enigma that surfaces haphazardly to unleash a new set of harsh tracks, previously with several records on Sweden’s PUTRID FILTH CONSPIRACY label and the DISTORTION label. Akin to the HIS HERO IS GONE / TRAGEDY/ FROM ASHES RISE school of dark riffs and mood, and the classic original “Prank Sound”, “TUNNELN I LJUSETS SLUT” is ACURSED’s years-in-the-making Prank debut, and one of the most bleak releases on the label yet- with minimal artwork, the band chose to not even provide song titles in the packaging to keep from distracting from the music and mood. Members also play in VICTIMS (Havoc Records), SUNDAY MORNING EINSTEINS (Prank), SAYYADINA (Sound Pollution).” – Prank
Agent Orange Living in Darkness, LP Record (Posh Boy) $13.99 Back in print on vinyl, a total classic of early Southern California hardcore. The very best record to mix punk/hardcore with surf. Just a killer record with great lyrics and amtosphere, in a class all it’s own.

He’s also a gifted musician, arranger and producer – one who plays virtually everything you hear on his records including his latest masterpiece, 2 Times Revolution. This is the album that will extend his cult following and win him widespread acclaim further afield – not because he’s jettisoned any of the integrity that typically informs his music, but due to the additional vision, scope and daring he now brings to it.”

Anti Cimex The Records 81-86, LP Record (A2O) $17.99 “The kings of chaos in Sweden. Ferocious speed thrash that continually displays that disorderly early Discharge attack, but is smashed forth much faster.Hardcore guitar soloing whines generate electric volts, as Anti Cimex spew out an intense onslaught of clamorous nitro-laced aggression. Jonsson´s vocals get rawer with each release. This is one of the most legendary Swedish kängcore bands. They started in 1981, inspired by bands like Discharge, Varukers, Germs, Black Sabbath, Disorder and others. The line-up was Johnsson (bass), Nillen (vocals), Charlie (drums), Jocke (guitar). The quickly released the EP “Anarkist Attack”. In 1982 the linup changed, with Johnsson on vocals and Conrad on bass. They recorded the EP “Raped Ass”, and in 1984 they released the classic EP “Victims Of A Bombraid”, with yet another bassist.” – SwedishPunkThis is those 3 records on one LP. Essential.

This is an official re issue and has all the original artwork, plus a thick (THICK) booklet of interviews, photos and documents from the early 80′s uk anarcho scene. Barry Brown Barry Brown @ King Tubby’s Studio, LP Record (Attack) $12.99 Still sealed copy of this Jamaican legend’s sessions at King Tubby’s Studio!
Black Lips Let It Bloom [Vinyl], LP Record (In the Red Records) $14.98 In The Red Records is proud to be home to the latest full-length from Atlanta’s Black Lips. Though barely in their 20’s, the Black Lips have already toured the US and Europe several times, released two albums on Bomp! records, lost a lead guitarist in a car crash, built a rabid cult following and earned a well deserved reputation one of the wildest live bands around due to onstage fist fights, nudity, violence, arson, projectile vomiting and other body fluids. You don’t want to stand to close to the stage at a Black Lips performance. This grimy and chaotic four-piece garage-punk band truly don’t give a fuck and will unintentionally prove it live time and again. Formed with the intention to cross the sound of the “Back From The Grave” 60’s garage compilation series with the Germs, the Lips have developed a sound unlike anyone else. Anyone familiar with the group will no doubt be a bit surprised by the sound of their latest “Let It Bloom” album which, while still skuzzy and raw, contains their catchiest and most melodic moments to date. If Royal Trux had listened to the Troggs instead of the Rolling Stones, they might sound like this (though the album does sound quite Stonesy at times).
Black Roots The Reggae Singles Anthology, LP Record (Bristol Archive Records ) $23.99 Limited edition pressing of this 2X LP.”Thirty years after they released their first four track EP Black Roots’ singles output is finally showcased on “Black Roots – The Reggae Singles Anthology”. Released on September 5th, by Bristol Archive Records in collaboration with Nubian Records this 16 track album spans the band’s creative peak of the 1980s.”
Bob Marley & Wailers Exodus [Vinyl], LP Record (Tuff Gong / Umgd) $21.99 180 Gram Vinyl – “Released at a time when Reggae was gaining worldwide attention, Exodus perfectly illustrated the political and cultural nature of an art form that was becoming the mouthpiece for both the Rastafarian religion and the struggles of the Jamaican people and it made Bob Marley the undisputed sovereign of the genre. Originally released on Island Records in 1977, Exodus became one of Marley’s first albums to receive international recognition thanks to the huge hits “Jammin,” “Waiting in Vain” and “One Love/People Get Ready.”"
Bob Marley & Wailers Legend [Vinyl], LP Record (Tuff Gong / Umgd) $19.99 180 Gram Reissue of the classic Legend compilation, featuring hits from Bob Marley & The Wailers.
Bob Marley And The Wailers Rasta Revolution, LP Record (Trojan Records) $19.99 Reissue from Trojan. Compilation record, produced by Lee Perry.
Boneblack Boneblack, LP Record (Mercy of Slumber) $11.99 Candian crust, gutteral growls and blackened riffs
Born / Dead The Final Collapse, LP Record (Prank) $11.99 “Another reassuringly sturdy-sounding Prank release roars out the traps, this time the second full-length from crusty anarcho punkers Born/Dead. This big ol’ bastard plonks itself part way between the gruff, ground-razing fury of a slightly-less-gloomy HHiG and the rabble-rousing UK82 of Criminal Damage for a sound that’s hefty and urgent yet pretty catchy with it. While we could’ve maybe done without the Cress cover (“Sirens” rather sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the originals…) the rest of it is solid and snarlingly up-front, all nicely tied together with some unobtrusive ambient/experimental moments that add to the overall feeling of doom and desperation.” – Collective-zine
Boskops SOL12, LP Record (Farewell) $13.99 “Re issue of this 1980′s German hardcore punk classic. Good catchy hardcore punk that sort of stradles the line between Deutchpunk and hardcore.” – Havoc
Bunny Wailer Dubd’sco Vol. 2, LP Record (Solomonic ) $19.99 LP is brand new.
Burning Hearts Extinctions, LP Record (Shelf Life) $15.99 “Burning Hearts second full-length album, Extinctions, is out now!
Buzz See You Sioux, LP Record (Dark Entries) $16.00 Dark Entries is honored to present the “See You Sioux” cassette by BUZZ for the first time ever on vinyl. BUZZ began as the brainchild of J-C Van Thienen in Lille, northern France, ten miles from the Belgian border. He released one album in 1985, the highly limited demo cassette See You Sioux. In the late 70s and early 80s J-C witnessed the punk explosion while studying and working abroad in England. He regularly attended concerts by Adam and the Antz, The Sound, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Ski Patrol, Spizzenergi, The Cure, interviewing the bands for a fanzine. Returning to France, and feeling inspired, J-C bought a Soundmaster drum machine and two second-hand synthesizers in 1983. He started composing songs applying the DIY punk ethos akin to Cabaret Voltaire and Fad Gadget, who like him were eccentrics in a pop-rock world.
Borrowing a 4-track Portastudio from a friend, J-C recorded 7 songs that would become the skeletons for the “See You Sioux” album. The local radio station provided studio time for free so BUZZ enlisted help from the guitarist (Vincent) and drummer (Franck) of The Figurines. His neighbor, Béatrice, added backing vocals. The result was the entirely self-produced See You Sioux cassette, recorded in one take. BUZZ combined new wave dancefloor appeal with the abrasive textures and irreverent attitude of post-punk. Lyrically, they addressed topics such as the Cold War, post-World War II tension in Berlin, the assassination of Kennedy, Pablo Picasso’s minimalism – all in a manner that was as sarcastic as it was politically-charged. The overall sound of “See You Sioux” fits nicely beside their French contemporaries: Opera Multi Steel, Norma Loy, Little Nemo, Taxi Girl, but is more aligned with their Belgian neighbors the Neon Judgement and Trisomie 21.
Artwork for the cassette jacket was all done by J-C using letrasets, scissors, glue, coloring with markers and hand-numbered in an edition of 250 photocopies. Over the years, BUZZ’s demo cassette travelled from bedrooms to dancefloors around the world, and even into the purse of Anne Clark around the time BUZZ supported her in Ghent and Paris. The success of See You Sioux landed BUZZ a deal with Danceteria Records, who would release four maxi 12” singles from 1986-1989. Around 1990 BUZZ took a break, eventually restarting in 2005 with the release of a career spanning compilation and remix album. J-C continues to write and release music today with his project Vuduvox.
All songs on “See You Sioux” have been remastered from the original C-60 metal master tape for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. Each LP includes a fold-out, double-sided insert with photos, lyrics and liner notes by Anne Clark. 27 years later these demos provide a glimpse of the bleak post-industrial European wasteland as seen from the bedroom window during the French coldwave scene.
Catholic Guilt Beyond Pleasuredome, LP Record (Self Released) $10.00 Intended to be listened to as loud as your speakers can handle… Layers of grime, decaying sound, rock and/or roll. STONED?
Caustic Christ Can’t Relate, LP Record (Havoc) $10.99 “Following up their 7″ on Havoc and splits with Rambo and Intense Youth, Caustic Christ unleashes their first full length on the scene. Poseurs shall know fear as the Caustic Christ hardcore steamroller crushes all opposition. Caustic Christ has one of the most unique “sounds” in current hardcore because they mix the bass heavy drive of Swedish crust with the high octane thrash of American hardcore. The lyrics and music sound so aggressive and pissed off the speakers can barely contain the rage. Lryically the straight forward agitprop of Aus Rotten has been replaced by a more bleak form of social commentary based on a desperate alienation. But critics who think Caustic Christ have distanced themselves from political statements should read the lyrics to Satisfied Means Pacified and other tracks on this LP. The cover artwork is by Tommy Gun who also did the 7″ and shirt artwork. I was a little un nerved by the choice of Ha Ha Ha by Flipper as a cover, that band always got on my nerves, but hey some of you out there are going to like it. The CD version of this contains all the 7″ and split release tracks as well, making it essentially a Caustic Christ discography of their material to date.” – Havoc
Chaos UK Chaos UK LP, LP Record (PHR) $15.99 “Vinyl re issue of the first Chaos UK LP, essential early 80′s UK punk. Along with Disorder this band really pushed UK punk into more noisy/raw territory.” – Havoc
Cheifs “Holly-West” Crisis, LP Record (Dr. Strange) $12.99 “Re press of this great discography LP that originally came out some years back. Cheifs are mostly known for their single which was comped on some early Killed By Death comps in the 90′s. However, they had a lot of great tracks and this Lp is much better than most “discographies” of KBD bands that really only had one or two good songs. Cheifs to me are kind of a transitional band combinging elements of 70′s Detroit rock, early So Cal (Hollywood) Punk and the nascent hardcore scene. They are every bit as good (in some cases better) than the better known So Cal bands from the same era. Nice to see this collection back in print.” – Havoc
Circle One Patterns of Force, LP Record (Mass Media) $12.99 “Re issue of this so cal hardcore classic. Circle One had a real mystique due to their wild man singer and cultish following. Raw early 80′s hardcore punk that pulls no punches.” – Havoc
Composer-Maria Minerva Cabaret Cixous, LP Record (Not Not Fun) $15.95 “Over the course of a 12″, cassette, and a stream of ace youtube vids, Maria Minerva has emerged as one of the most interesting artistes to come into leftfield-pop focus over the last 12 months. ‘Cabaret Cixous’ is her debut album, a coruscating water-bed of mottled ’90s dance-pop memes writhing under blankets of slyly sexy new age synths while her dreamy vocals whisper and croon seductively suggestive lyrics. It’s not quite aural soft porn, but there’s an inescapably lascivious element to her music which definitely has its appeal and marks her out with more teeth and enigmatic confidence than, say, Nite Jewel, with whom she’s often compared. Musically, her references span deep House to the Euro-pop she absorbed growing up living in Tallinn, Estonia, but all bleached with that straight-to-tape aesthetic so loved by NNF and Jim Ferraro et al, while lyrically and conceptually the album’s title invokes French feminist theorist Hélène Cixous and her songwriting is both visceral and solipsistically dreamy. It’s a richly satisfying and highly recommended listen.”–Boomkat
Contempt Who Needs Diplomacy?, LP Record (Havoc) $11.99 “Excellent UK political punk rock from some veterans. If you are like me and grew up listening to Conflict, Crass and the like as well as UK Subs, Blitz and Abrasive Wheels, you’ll love this records. Hard hitting catchy punk rock with memorable choruses, coupled with sober and serious political lyrics that are heartfelt and to the point. The “street punk” scene in America has been over run by postcard poseurs and this is a good antidote for those of us who love this style but can’t hang with most of it’s current moribund status.” – Havoc
Contopotere Nessuna Speranza Nessuna Pauna, LP Record (Gonna Puke Retro) $15.99 90′s Italian crust re issued on Agipunk, much harder to find than their second LP.
Crash Box Crash Box: 1983-1984, LP Record (Gonna Puke Retro) $15.99 “I’ve said this before, but after the USA, UK, Swedena and Finland the best hardcore scene in the 80′s had to be Italy. So many totally killer bands with tons of energy. Lucky for us the past few years have seen almost all the cult 80′s Italian hardcore re issueed, and I have tried hard to track this stuff down and stock it in my distro because it’s the most. You just can’t fuck with the power and energy of these bands nothing sounds more “legit” than 80′s Italian hardcore.”

Cuticle Mother Rhythm Earth Memory, LP Record (Not Not Fun) $15.95 The NNF debut (after an EP on 100% SILK) by this Iowa City electronic maximalist. Danse Society Demos Vol 1, LP Record (Dark Entries) $18.00 Dark Entries digs deep into the UK Goth underground to unearth The Danse Society “Demos Vol. 1.” The band formed in Barnsley, England in 1980 from the remnants of local post-punk bands Y? and Lips-X. Between 1980 and 1982 the band released a handful of 7” and 12” EPs and the debut album “Seduction” on their own independent label, Society Records. The band also recorded several sessions for Radio 1, including a John Peel session, and topped the Independent Charts with the single “Somewhere.” Their commercial debut, “Heaven Is Waiting” was released in February 1984. They released two further singles and the album “Looking Through” before breaking up in 1986. After 24 years three original band members reunited to record the new album “Change of Skin,” released in July 2011.
1983 was The Danse Society’s year. Playing sold out tours and the success of “Seduction” won them a recording contract with Arista Records. Spending their advance on new equipment the band recorded an album’s worth of demos in one day at Greenhouse Studios, London in May 1983. The line-up for this session was Steve Rawlings (vocals), Paul Nash (guitar), Lyndon Scarfe (keyboards), Tim Wright (bass) and Paul Gilmartin (drums). Doom laden guitar riffs, swirling synthesizers, crushing drums, driving and disembodied vocals, characterize the distinctive Society sound. “Demos Vol. 1” is the closest you’ll get to The Danse Society live experience. You can almost taste the dry ice, feel the power coming through the monitors, and become entranced by the strobe-induced madness this album embodies. The Danse Society operate in a raw, atmospheric realm less campy than many of their Goth Rock peers, unconcerned with pop charts or commercial appeal. These aren’t songs, they are commands.
This 11 track collection includes an early version of the single “Wake Up,” 5 demos that would make the cut for “Heaven Is Waiting,”3 songs that would later become B-sides and 2 unreleased instrumentals. All songs have been remastered from the original tapes for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. Each LP includes a fold-out, double-sided newsprint poster with photos, lyrics and liner notes by original drummer Paul Gilmartin and music journalist Mick Mercer. 28 years later these demos capture a band at the height of their confident, powerful and haunting glory.

Deep Throat II Soundtrack [Vinyl], LP Record (Light in the Attic) $17.00 Originally released in 1974 as BRS-101.With Deep Throat: Part I raking in millions and the FBI on the hunt, the X-rated scenes for this infamous sequel mysteriously vanished. This may have left fans with a lack of jizz, but all is redeemed with this loungey-porno-funk gem, clearly rivaling anything in the adult genre or ’70s Hollywood. This legendary soundtrack to the equally legendary sequel is packaged and available on gatefold 180g vinyl LPs with countless photos, new notes, fold-out movie posters, and a few other sleazy surprises. Plus, liner notes by the world’s most famous pornstar – Ron “The Hedgehog” Jeremy. The definitive article on all things Deep has arrived!NOTE:In the early 1970’s, the U.S. government seized all film reels and master tapes for Deep Throat I. Therefore all musicians and writers are unknown. In early 2004, a number of long-lost reels were discovered, giving fans a deeper glimpse into the legend of Deep Throat. After a detailed restoration by John Golden Mastering, sonic imperfections still do apply, but definite aural improvements have been made, including the conversion from mono to stereo and a considerable decrease in hiss and distortion.
Defecation Purity Dilution, LP Record (Power it Up) $16.00 Sealed reproduction of this grind classic from Power it Up.
Defiance Out of Order, LP Record (Unrest) $14.99 “Latest Lp from Defiance. Mixes their traditional hardcore punk sound with a much more Clash style of slightly melodic 77 UK punk. If you like Defiance, you’ll love this LP.” – Havoc
Dekadent Almost Complete Dekadent, LP Record (Twisted Chords) $17.50 “Dekadent from Giengen was one of the most active German Anarcho/Crust/Punk Bands in the 90s. Existing from 1988 to 2000 the band released two albums, two singles and was part of several compilations. Dekadent were different from the rest of the classic Crust/AnarchoPunk, not least due to the voice of singer Tanja. Listening to it you might think of UKinspired sound, which gets his really own note through the female vocals. The Lyrics are in German: highpolitical, direct and without compromises. Dekadent was always DIY, all recordings were done in their own practiceroom with a 8-trackmachine, to that effect the sound is rough and original. Some of the records were released by the band`s own label, some on Civilisation Records, all originals are sold out for years.” – Profane Existence

Derrick Harriott & Other Various Artists I Remember Those Reggae Oldies, LP Record (Crystal Records) $15.99 Compilation featuring Derrick Harriott, Big Youth, U-Roy, Rudy Mills, Keith & Tex, the Ethiopians, and the Kingstonians.
Derrota Asko Infinito, LP Record (Rust Machine) $12.50 In many ways, this LP is a breath of fresh air. Judging from the mammoth lyric book that contains translations from spanish into 4 different languages, DERROTA has put a lot of consideration into their words, and althought the english translations are slightly awkward, the songs appear to be thoughtful andbeyond your standard political rants. The vocalist has a convincing animated, furiously shouted/screamed style. A lot of the guitar work is random, playfull and scratchy but the guitarris also knows when to bash out into a full-on hardcore frenzy. In general, DERROTA blends differents elements of ’80′s, 90′s and modern hardcore and punk styles, but doesns’t appear to be dedicated to any particular era. Some of their musical ideas don’t work, like the stoner jam-out at the end of the LP – shit nearly put me to sleep – but the random and nealty-littered, jittery guitar parts make DERROTA’s songs memorable, distinct and interesting. This LP is not for everybody- the modern punk who flavours an unbalance mixture of noise and apathy needn’t bother, but those who still enjoy listening to sincere hardcore punk will find a lot to like here. (CI) Maximum R’n'R #306 Nov.08
Destrucktions Complete Destrucktions, LP Record (Hardcore Holocaust) $16.50 “This crucial discography came out in 2006 on the now defunct Hardcore Holocaust label, but I managed to track down some copies in Europe. As we all know Finland had one of the best hardcore punk scenes in the early 1980s. This LP compiles the work of Destrucktions who were one of the best of this prolific and extremely high quality era of hardcore. I’ve been listening to the LP since I bought a copy off of Chris BCT in one of his auctions in the late 80′s and it’s still sounding great. You get the LP, comp tracks and demos here. Don’t pass it up.” – Havoc
Dezerter Underground Out of Poland, LP Record (Nikt Nic Niewie) $14.50 “Vinyl re issue of this 1987 LP compiled by Joey Shithead of DOA, one of the first western bands to tour behind the iron curtain. This compiles the first 7″, live at Jarocin and a 1985 studio session from one of the foremost Polish hc/punk bands Dezerter. This is worth it for the first four tracks on the first side alone. Originally released by Maximum Rock N Roll when punk from behind the Iron Curtain was still a radical and little known thing in the west.” – Havoc
Disappears Pre Language, LP Record (Kranky) $15.98 Right on cue, the third annual report from Chicagoʼs DISAPPEARS is submitted for your consideration. Following up on the acclaimed Guider album released just over a year ago, and with new drummer STEVE SHELLEY now fully integrated into the group, these songs were again forged into proper shape during live shows before heading to the studio and the tape machine. Never ones to dither or be indecisive, itʼs a full-bore assault from the opening track to the last as Disappears attack these new songs with their usual relentless determination. Itʼs a sinister proceeding—debut Lux was preoccupied with death and endings while follow up Guider with protection—but Pre Language finds the band speaking on, of all things, love. Direct allusions to Philip K. Dick, James Baldwin, and Joan of Arc sit side by side with songs about the lows of life and the characters that permeate it. Recorded in Hoboken New Jersey at Sonic Youthʼs Echo Canyon West studio and mixed with JOHN CONGLETON, Pre Language finds Disappears at their most potent and focused. The band has finally stepped into their own world and the results are thrilling.
Discharge Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing, LP Record (Havoc) $12.99 “Considered by many to be one of the best, if not THE BEST hardcore record of the 1980s. This record caught Discharge at the peak of their powers, combining the anger, intensity and power of their early material with a high caliber of production and musicianship. Pure anger and power, shocking and provocative graphics (before these were passe on punk record covers) combined with rampaging riffs and coarse vocals. Faithfully reproduced as a gatefold LP. This has been my favorite record since it was released and I’m very excited to re issue it on the Havoc Label.”

Dropdead First LP, LP Record (Armageddon Label) $14.99 Back in print, the first Lp from Drop Dead one of the definitive records for early 90′s fast core, still sounds punishing and extreme as ever.
DS-13 Killed by the Kids, LP Record (Havoc) $10.99 “The first full length release on Havoc! DS 13 was my favorite band during the Y2K thrash revival and I was stoked when they told me they would like for me to do their second LP. This LP was recorded at a top studio in Stockholm, has a full color cover and insert, comes on color vinyl and features original cover art by Pushead himself. DS 13′s sound on this LP is similar to the last LP, the sound has progressed (regressed) into a more early 80′s raw thrash sound. The guitars are less distorted and grindy sounding than the early releases. This gives the album a sort of raw intensity that allows the songwriting and energy to come out full force rather than behind a wall of distorted noise. I would compare DS 13 to early 80′s HC bands like Minor Threat, Poison Idea and such, but I really feel they have a distinct hardcore sound all their own. In the years since it’s release this LP has become something of a modern classic and remains one of our top sellers.” – Havoc
Dysmal Abyss Born to be Born Again [Lathe Cut LP Ltd. to 30], LP Record (Lighten Up Sounds) $22.99 “These are the sounds of delinquency.
“Dysmal Abyss” came into being during the cold Mid-coast winter of 2009 in Belfast, Maine in response to a locally posted flyer calling for like-minded individuals to form a band. Citing influences such as Herzog’s “Aguirre”, unfocused resentment, early SST records, Raymond Carver, alcoholism, free jazz, and your mom’s new boyfriend, “Dysmal Abyss” craft heavy and damaged dark-wave free improvisation throbbers. Featuring 15 year old Maine local Randy Nichols on 5 string bass, along with Justin C. Rhody ((D)(B)(H), Hepatitis (B) Youth, Smut) on guitar/amplifier, and Matthew Himes (Rotten Living, Free Boys, Glue Clinic) on drums/ampliflied chicken feeder. “Born to be born again” collects the crude doom-laden highlights of those inspired and crucial sessions. Feel like feeling bad? Blaring feedback pulses over slow and steady bass groove sludge and relentlessly pounding rhythms. Too noisy for the metal heads, too rockin’ for the noise freaks. Anti-guitar misanthropy, ambient bass-tone lurch, and rhythmic screeching cacophany to be listened to at maximum volume. Available now on cassette, and as a very limited edition lathe-cut 12″ LP.” – Lighten Up Sounds

This long-lost album has been floating around ONLY on eBay for big bucks or in collector’s dreams, until NOW! EARTH, ROOTS, AND WATER Innocent Youths, LP Record (Light in the Attic) $15.99 nnocent Youths was the first long player released on Jerry Brown’s Summer Records imprint, hitting the emerging Toronto reggae marketplace in 1977. In 2008, the original LP is virtually extinct, a highly coveted and extremely rare piece of Canadian reggae history (often described as the northern answer to Lee Perry’s Black Ark). For the uninitiated, we are talking heavy bass, drums, reverb, echo, roots vocals, keys, guitar, percussion, and Brown’s wild style touch behind the controls.Earth, Roots & Water was initially formed in the mid-seventies to provide hard rhythms and tight backing tracks for the growing number of musical friends and family who ventured to Brown’s Malton, Ontario, basement studio. Over the years, a veritable who’s who of Jamaican music scene passed through Summer Sound to record with like-minded brethren. Jackie Mittoo, Willi Williams, Johnny Osbourne, Carl Dawkins, Leroy Sibbles, Stranger Cole, and King Jammy are just a handful of the label’s impressive roster.By 1977, Earth, Roots & Water had developed into an engaging live entity as well, based around the talents of Adrian “Homer” Miller (vocals), Anthony “Base” Hibbert (bass), Colin “Zuba” Suban (drums), Matt Shelley (guitar), and Tony “KB” Moore (keyboards). Both a sonic and visual force, the charismatic youths soon found themselves performing in and around the Toronto area, opening up for The Police and The Stranglers while extending the UK-born punk/reggae love affair to North America. In 2008, Light In The Attic Records along with Jerry Brown and Jamaica-Toronto series producer Kevin Howes (aka Sipreano) have decided to share this vital bounty to reggae fans the world over. Innocent Youths contains the complete studio album lovingly remastered from the original Summer Records master tapes. Over 30 years ahead of its time, this maverick material showcases the breadth of Earth, Roots & Water. Dig in…
Easy Star All-Stars Dubber Side of the Moon, LP Record (Easy Star) $22.00 “Following another celebrated run of global touring, the Easy Star All-Stars are geared up to release Dubber Side of the Moon on October 26. Inspired by the burgeoning dub step scene and dub visionaries such as On-U Sound’s Adrian Sherwood and Mad Professor, the Easy Star All-Stars have compiled the ultimate remix collection of their much lauded reggae smash Dub Side of The Moon. Each track features a unique dub producer exploring spaced-out reggae and bass-heavy remixes of the original Dub Side of the Moon – a reggae tribute to Pink Floyd’s iconic Dark Side of the Moon. Dubber Side also includes 4 bonus remixes (as well as 2 additional bonus tracks exclusive to the iTunes release).Originally released in 2003, Dub Side of the Moon was followed by Radiodread (2006) and Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band (2009), establishing Easy Star All-Stars as one of the top international reggae acts of the last decade. The band has amassed over 300,000 album sales and is equally successful in live appearances, playing over 125 shows in 25 countries on 6 different continents in 2009 alone. In fact, the idea of reinterpreting Dub Side spawned from the band’s intense touring schedule. They were continually being exposed to new dub and reggae offshoots around the world. “We really wanted to evolve these songs and put them in the hands of producers who might take it in new directions,” explains Easy Star Records’ Lem Oppenheimer. “It seemed like a good way to bring some of this newly developing futurist reggae right into our own music.” It was essential to find a balance between the classic dub masters and the new generation of bass-line enthusiasts, while also managing to express the band’s musical outlook and development.Mad Professor had previously worked on the Radiodread album and was an obvious choice, as were John Peel favorites Dreadzone and Adrian Sherwood, both of whom fit into what Easy Star Records likes to call the ‘dub master vibe.’ Mad Professor’s mix is typically off the wall, whilst Adrian Sherwood manages to create a wall of sound through his adventures in space echo. The All-Stars’ resident soundman The Alchemist’s interpretation of ‘Money’ is a bass bleeder from the start and is probably the track that fits easiest into the dub step category, but Kalbata’s might be the most innovative mix on the album. Israeli born and signed to Soul Jazz Records, his mix merges the tech sound into dub-step. Boston’s mysterious 10 Ft Ganja Plant and Canada’s Juno-Award Winning Dubmatix both provide roots heavy remixes to the album.”
EBS Destroy Your Enemy, LP Record (Vicious Interference) $10.99 Totally overlooked raw antisocial hardcore from Florida. Their “cosmetic society” ep is one of the sleepers of 90′s hardcore which will be lauded on future volumes of Killed By Death. Just pissed off angry hardcore here.
Europa La Ultima Emocion!, LP Record (Dark Entries) $16.00 Europa was a short-lived synthpop group from Valencia, Spain formed in 1980 by Julio “Nexus” Pastor (synthesizers), Alfonso Aguado (vocals, guitar), Lino Oviaño (vocals, drum machine), and José Luis Macias (synthesizers). The quartet championed the use of synthesizers, drum machines and other polyphonic gadgets in a city that was stuck in the throws of progressive rock. They recorded and released their only album La Última Emoción in 1981 on cassette, released by DAI (Division Avanzada Independiente) a label interested in bands “capable of building electronic sounds from drum machines, sequencers, synths and effects, rather than conventional instruments like guitars and basses.”
The original issue of La Última Emoción was a single-sided cassette and limited to 500 copies. The band mixed all the tracks at their home studio using a Roland Juno 60, Casiotone 202, Korg Polysix, MS-20, MS-10 and the KR-55 drum machine. As part of the Spanish Techno-pop movement of the 1980s, Europa’s songs featured arpeggiated synthesizers and upbeat drum machines that flashback to the sound of Vince Clarke’s Depeche Mode days. Comparisons could be made to other Spanish Techno-pop bands like Aviador Dro, Vocoder or Metal y Ca but Europa weaved a unique style of driving, energetic rhythms, bouncy keyboards and soaring vocals perfect for dancing or speeding into outer space. Shorty after their debut release the band would switch their name to Última Emoción releasing an EP in 1983 and an album in 1984 before breaking up. Alfonso Aguado went on to front Los Inhumanos, Julio Pastor launched the Valencia techno bands Megabeat and Interfront, while José Luis Macias and Lino Oviaño formed Comité Cisne. In 2010 the original Europa line-up reformed to play a few select live shows celebrating the re-issue of their 1984 cassette Máquinas Románticas on Turia Records of Spain. Their sound remains clean, rhythmic and futuristically strange, transporting crowds to another dimension.

F You Are An EP / Mess You Up 25th Anniversary Edition, LP Record (Puke N Vomit) $12.99 “Musically, this is a great garage punk release. Its got extremely raw singing, a biting guitar assault, and that appealingly boisterous, devil-may-care quality. It’s also funnier than hell, though I prefer not to contemplate the significance of the bizarre graffiti of the sleeve, inserts, and disc labels.” – JB, MRNR 1983
FELT POEM OF THE RIVER LP (VINYL ALBUM) UK CREATION 1987, LP Record (CREATION) $30.00 US Creation pressing. Vinyl is clean and shiny with no marks that affect play (VG+), sleeve has slightly more wear with a corner crease, some light corner fray, few dings, nicks into edges.
Gang of Four Solid Gold, LP Record (Obsure Alterna) $21.00 GoF’s seminal 2nd album reissued on its 30th anniversary!
Genocide / Sorto Final Path to Destruction, LP Record (Torture Garden Picture Company) $9.99 Record has no visible defects and plays perfectly. Jacket has some minor wear around the edges, most notably a seam split on the top side where the record has pushed through, but is otherwise in great shape.
Geriatric Unit Permethrin Blues, LP Record (Boss Tunage) $11.99 “OLD FAST LOUD! GERIATRIC UNIT are back with their fourth offering of classic hardcore punk featuring ex members of HERESY, HARD TO SWALLOW and IRON MONKEY you know what to expect – loud, fast uncompromising hardcore punk from the masters!!” – Boss Tunage
Germ Attak Fear of the Unknown, LP Record (Loud Punk) $12.99 “Canadian punx deliver some good catchy UK 82 style jams. Solid all the way through, if you feel like most “street punk” is too metal or thrashy or hollywood, here’s your chance to get into a real DIY PUNK band playing in the traditional style.” – Havoc
Giuda Decadenza, LP Record (Agitpunk) $11.99 “DARKNESS OF CRUST! Heavy and metallic crust in the tradition of the old UK masters like Hellbastard and Antisect. This record is much heavier and more metallic than their last LP which had more of a Discharge meets crust vibe. Some of the songs even veer into the Bolt Thrower or Axegrinder realm of serious apokaplyptic crust.” – Havoc
Government Issue Joy Ride, LP Record (Dr. Strange) $12.99 “Excellent re issue of this DC hardcore classic. I grew up in DC and Government Issue was one of my very favorite bands growing up. I was at every show, including the record release show for this LP. This LP has GI’s trademark hardcore sound, with a strong hard rock influence that was way ahead of it’s time, and as we all know now, rarely equalled. Tons of bands try to mix hardcore and hard rock and only a handful pull it off. This record sounds like it’s hardcore punk recorded and mixed to be played in a stadium opening for Rose Tattoo or (early) Van Halen. I love this record and after the Make an Effort ep it’s my favorite GI material.” – Havoc
Government Issue The Fun Just Never Ends, LP Record (Dr. Strange) $12.99 “I grew up in DC and Government Issue was one of the first bands I really got into as a kid. I swear I went to see them almost every weekend in 1984 and 85. As we all know they kind of lost their way in the late 80′s and started experimenting with psychedlic rock. This was their last great record before things started to go off the rails. Some really solid hardcore here with some rock influence (in that the riffs are “big” like they should be in a stadium). There are some great songs on this LP and live in this time period they were still unstoppable. I prefer Make an Effort and Joy Ride to this LP, but if you don’t have this one on vinyl it’s for sure worth picking up.” – Havoc
Grong Grong To Hell N Back, LP Record (Memorandum) $16.99 Warehouse find!!!! Self-Titled LP by Australian rockers from 1983!!!! Members later went on to form Kingsnake Roost and Hack (see virus 099). Charles Tolnay, Dave Taskas, Michael Farkas, and George Klestines. Cover versions of songs by MC 5 and the Meteors. Last copies ever of this classic slab of down under wax!
Harda Tider Gatan Kallar, LP Record (Harda Skivor) $17.99 “I’m having a hard time picturing Malmo as “crime city” but here it is, Crime City Hardcore. Sweden usually produces top shelf HC and while it’s mostly known for crust and raw punk, here’s some top shelf HARDCORE from hoodie wearing, graffitti writing dudes with neck and knuckle tats and edgemen as well as the usual Swedish HC/D beat suspects. Hard.” – Havoc
Harvey Milk My Love Is Higher Than Your Assesment of What My, LP Record (Chunklet) $20.99 Available for the first time on vinyl! “This is ground zero for one of the nineties’ last true cult bands; now legendary for churning ghostly wailings, unearthly bellows, and gentle whispers together into one soaring, crawling, ugly and beautiful blend of brilliance. My Love… is essential listening for all fans of hard and heavy post-rock, and stands as the official starting point for your Harvey Milk education.”
Harvey Milk Pleaser, LP Record (Chunklet) $21.00 Brand new and sealed.
Hellshock Ghosts of the Past, LP Record (Black Water) $14.99 Hellshock’s demo now on vinyl! Limited to 500 copies.
Heratys Heratys, LP Record (Not Enough) $15.99 “My new favorite band! Killer Swedish/Finnish hardcore that manages to sound just like a cross between Totalitar and Skitkids without being derivative. Peter from Skitkids plays on this and I think the singer is from Unkind. Powerful and raging, great guitar tone and “vibe” the atmosphere is electrifying when you play it just like Totalitar and Skitkids vinyl.” – Havoc
Heresy Face Up To It!, LP Record (Boss Tunage) $17.99 “UK fast hardcore with some heavy US hardcore influences. This band was very influential and popular in their day. This LP saw some progression and a little more influence from other popular bands/styles creeping in, but it’s still raging start to finish.” – Havoc
Holding On Just Another Day, LP Record (Havoc) $10.99 “Holding On released a split 7″ with Real Enemy on Havoc (with 1% records). Since then their sound has really intensified. Holding On mixes late 80′s SE hardcore styles of Judge and Chain of Strength with the early 80′s punk/HC sound of Negative Approach and SSD. This record is packed with power and energy. The vocals are raw and pissed off, screaming with the alienation of modern life. The LP was recorded and produced by Tim Mac, who has recorded and produced most of Am Rep’s material as well as numerous local bands over the years. As a result the sound is loud and clear and the energy really comes out in the music with the intensity of a live show. This LP was a joint project between 1%, THD and Havoc Records. Following this release Holding On recorded the Question What You Live For LP for Bridge 9 records. Karl and Andy went on to join local metal core band Martyr AD who have and LP on Victory.” – Havoc
Howlin Rain Russian Wilds, LP Record (Birdman) $21.98 2LP. Howlin Rain emerged in 2004 from the incendiary embers of San Francisco’s underground noise-psych legends Comets on Fire. A rag-tag trio of soulful chooglin’ and fuzz-box triumph, the band forged their own trails into the Cosmic California sound with their 2006 self-titled debut on Birdman Records. Within a year, just before the release of their second album, Magnificent Fiend, producer Rick Rubin signed them to his American Recordings label. Between 2006 and 2009, the group toured the US and Europe extensively with The Black Crowes, Queens of The Stone Age, Black Mountain and Mudhoney—not to mention legends and Howlin Rain faves Terry Reid and Roky Erickson.Under Rubin’s guidance, The Russian Wilds took nearly three years to complete, and the long, strange trip is engrained in every moment of its 61-minute rock ’n’ roll journey. Frontman Ethan Miller delivers literary-lyrical meditations on loss, sorrow and redemption above a dynamic din of deep grooves, soaring harmonies and blazing fuzz guitars, and the album’s breadth and scope recalls great, sprawling albums of the late ’60s and ’70s like The Allmans’ Live at the Fillmore East, Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland, Santana’s Lotus and Love’s Forever Changes. At once bombastic and ethereal, The Russian Wilds stands on its own dark mountain in today’s musical landscape.
I-Roy Original Deejay @ King Tubby’s Studio, LP Record (Attack) $17.99 “I-Roy was born Roy Reid and worked as an accountant for the government in the mid-’60s. During this time, he took deejaying as a hobby, but because of the rise of its popularity, he established and operated Turbo Sonic Sound and started taking it more seriously. He then went on to record a string of hits for various producers of that time. Bunny Lee, one of Jamaica’s finest producers recorded some of I-Roy’s most popular tracks, which we have right here on one big album — all tracks recorded and mixed at King Tubby’s studio.”
Inservibles Inservibles, LP Record (La Vida Es Un Mus / Shogun) $15.99 Alex Ratcharge: “The sound of Mexico’s INSERVIBLES is menacing, disturbed, maybe even evil; their vocals have the same deranged vibe that made early RAW POWER stand out and the negative vibes in their tunes reminds a mexican NERORGASMO; they’ve also been quite accurately described as some sorts of REATARDS playing VOID covers – yes it is HC, but it is fucked up garage as well… “HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Iskra Iskra, LP Record (Mercy of Slumber) $13.99 Black metal-influenced crust insanity from Canada.

Joe Gibbs & The Professionals No Bones For The Dogs – Dubs From The Mighty Two 1974 To 1979, LP Record (Joe Gibbs & The Professionals) $33.99 “On ‘No Bones For The Dogs’ we have focused on The Mighty Two’s dub output and collected together some of the most outstanding tracks from the period. Many of these tracks have never been released on CD and have not been available on vinyl since they were originally pressed on Jamaican seven inch singles. Standout tracks such as ‘Earthquake’, ‘Babylon Bridge’ and ‘Burning Version’ display a stunning sonic depth and range due to Errol Thompson’s engineering genius and Joe Gibbs early training as an electronics engineer. With brilliant artwork and graphics and full colour CD booklet and double vinyl package this is another stunning Pressure Sounds package for your delight.”
John Mannion Slice Through Or / In Glassmetal, LP Record (Hanson) $21.75 Debut LP, three years in the making, by JOHN MANNION of RED LIGHT COLLECTIVE and CATHODE TERRO SECRETION. This extreme electronic composition is an ultra-dynamic mix of modern classical, electronic, noise, and power electronics techniques. Silkscreen jacket, lyric sheet. Edition of 500.
Karen Dalton In My Own Time [Vinyl], LP Record (Light in the Attic) $17.00 Recorded over a six month period in 1970/71 at Bearsville, In My Own Time was Daltons only fully planned and realized studio album. The material was carefully selected and crafted for her by producer/musician Harvey Brooks, the Renaissance man of rock-jazz who played bass on Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited and Miles’ Bitches Brew. It features ten songs that reflected Daltons incredible ability to break just about anybodys heart – from her spectral evocation of Joe Tates “One Night of Love”, to the dark tragedy of the traditional “Katie Cruel”. Known as a great interpreter of choice material, Dalton could master both country and soul genres with hauntingly pining covers of George Jones “Take Me” and Holland-Dozier-Hollands “How Sweet It Is”.

Lee “Scratch” Perry The Return Of Pipecock Jackxon, LP Record (Honest Jon’s Records ) $15.99 “Originally released in 1980, this album is the final work to emerge from the Black Ark studio, before its permanent destruction. It concludes a series of such LP masterworks as Super Ape, War In A Babylon, Police And Thieves, and The Return Of The Super Ape. Enthrallingly, it crosses the soundworld of Roast Fish Collie Weed And Cornbread with new hybrids — like the irresistible eleven-minute opener, rolling and delirious, a kind of reggae prophesy of Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing, but musically richer, and more glazed, randy and visionary.”
Lee Perry Return Of The Super Ape (Upsetters), LP Record (Upsetter) $16.99 LP is Brand New.

Listen Whitey! Sounds of Black Power 1967-74 Listen Whitey! Sounds of Black Power 1967-74, LP Record (LIGHT IN THE ATTIC) $24.00 The Definitive Black Power Aural DocumentOver a five year period in Oakland, CA – archivist Pat Thomas befriended key leaders of the seminal Black Power Movement, dug through Huey Newton’s archives at Stanford University, spent countless hours and thousands of dollars online, and talked to rank and file Black Panther Party members, uncovering dozens of obscure albums, singles, and stray tapes. Along the way, he began to piece together a time period (1967-1974) when revolutionaries were seen as pop culture icons: Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, Angela Davis, Stokely Carmichael – and musicians were seen as revolutionaries; Gil Scott-Heron, The Last Poets, Bob Dylan, John Lennon and others. As a result, Thomas wrote a 70,000-word hardcover book entitled Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965 – 1975 – to be published by Fantagraphics in early 2012 – which also includes some 200 full color images of obscure recordings that encompass rock, soul, jazz, comedy, poetry, and even religious sermons blended with Black Nationalism.Light In The Attic Records presents the companion ‘soundtrack’ to the book, For the time first ever, Black and White artists share space on a definitive anthology of the Black Power era. A cross-cultural overview that sees Bob Dylan’s out of print 1971 single “George Jackson” reissued for the first time along with several selections from Motown’s long forgotten ‘Black Forum’ label – Motown’s early 70’s Black Power militant imprint that has never been documented until now with provocative recordings from SNCC spokesman Stokely Carmichael, outspoken African-American poet Amiri Baraka, and Black Panther Party singer/songwriter Elaine Brown.Intensive hours of research led to a 16-track anthology that not only brings together Dylan and Lennon on the same compilation for the first time (via John & Yoko’s 1972 song about Angela Davis), but presents the diversity of the Black Power Movement like never before. Despite their common goal of freedom and respect, many of these activists didn’t necessarily speak for or to each other. Eldridge Cleaver was living in exile in Algiers in 1970 when LSD guru Timothy Leary showed up seeking asylum. Weeks later, Leary was placed under ‘house arrest’ by Cleaver and that moment is presented here. The Last Poets quickly splintered into several factions not long after their debut and several recordings capture that tumultuous period. Comedian Dick Gregory was as into mocking the establishment as he was trying to make people laugh and his monologue reflects a time when ‘entertainment’ needed to be political to be relevant. There were regional private press 7 inch singles from the likes of the Shahid Quintet, and the Black Panther’s own band The Lumpen. Gene McDaniels’ Outlaw album has long been a cult favorite, and is represented by a 1970 live version of “Silent Majority.” No Black Power anthology would be complete without Gil Scott-Heron featured on a rare 1970’s solo piano take of “Winter in America.” The international significance of the times is reflected with a live 1969 recording of English folk singer Roy Harper’s “I Hate The White Man.”No less of an expert than New York based journalist Greg Tate recently remarked when glancing at the Listen, Whitey! book from which this compilation is gleaned; “Look out newjacks, post-blacks and radical rookies – this Molotov romancing family album is about to grab your mama.’’

The heavyweight vinyl pressing is very limited to 1000 worldwide.Flautist and composer Lloyd McNeill is also a distinguished American painter, poet, and photographer born in Washington, D.C., in 1935. His multi-disciplinary creative life has led to encounters and friendships with Nina Simone, Picasso, Eric Dolphy, Nana Vasconceles and other legendary cultural figures.McNeill grew up through the era of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and his life is a reflection of the ideals that the movement stood for. He went to Morehouse College in Atlanta, where earlier Martin Luther King had been educated. King frequently lobbied students at the college for support in marches and demonstrations in the city. McNeill later became one of the first black professors in the American university system. In the mid-1960s he moved to France where he was befriended by Picasso and worked with a number of émigré-jazz musicians whilst living in Paris. In the late 1960s he taught jazz and painting workshops at the New Thing Art and Architecture Center in Washington. In the 1970s he travelled throughout Brazil and West Africa studying music and taught music anthropology in the US.A respected painter and artist, Lloyd McNeill continues to perform as both musician and poet worldwide.

Musically, McNeill has worked in many areas of African-American music. He performed in latin groups in the 1950s and 60s and led his own Brazilian group in the 1970s and 1980s. He has also composed for both ballet and art exhibitions.”

Max Romeo & The Upsetters War Ina Babylon, LP Record (Upsetter) $18.99 Upsetter repress of this beautiful record from Max Romeo. Created between the minds of Lee “Scratch” Perry and Max Romeo.”The nearest thing to a concept album roots reggae has to offer, War in a Babylon marries Max Romeo’s conscious musings on the ravaged state of 1970s Jamaica with Lee Perry’s otherworldly production. If you need further recommendation, know that Bob Marley begged Perry for the title track — to no avail.”

Outer Space Outer Space, LP Record (Arbor) $15.99 “John Elliott’s Outer Space project is a laboratory for electronic investigation. Acting as a continuance of the studies of mid 20th century electronic music composers such as Nik Pascal and Laurie Spiegel, Elliott’s music is deeply indebted to the inner workings of the electric signal. Acting almost as a meditation, through the simple gesture of translation Elliott’s process begins to reveal itself as electricity is converted into acoustic pressure and potential; the melody of physics. The six recordings on the album are each a microcosmic view into Elliott’s practice; a keystone, illuminating his solo practice as well as his work as a member of Emeralds. Composed and recorded over the past three years without the use of digital synthesizers and arpeggiation; a record closely connected to a personal path, attempting to make sense, to understand one’s journey. Mastered by Keith Fullerton Whitman; pressed in a second edition of 350 copies on black vinyl with full color gloss covers and black and white printed inner sleeves.” – Arbor Records

Pheeroan ak Laff House Of Spirit: Mirth, LP Record (Universal Sound / Soul Jazz Records) $27.99 “American composer and drummer Pheeroan AkLaff’s celebrated ‘House of Spirit:Mirth’ features in our recent revolutionary jazz records book (compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker). This album was originally released in 1979 on the composer Oliver Lake’s bespoke private-press label Passin Thru’ Inc., a not for profit label ‘dedicated to fostering, promoting and advancing the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the arts’. Consequently ‘House of Spirit’ remains one of the most elusive deep jazz releases of its time to collectors.Aklaff was an original of the Detroit jazz scene of the early 70s alongside musicians of the Tribe (Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Doug Hammond) and Strata collective (Kenny Cox and Charles Moore) and local luminaries such as Travis Biggs before moving to New York in the mid-1970s to work at the centre of the vibrant Loft/radical jazz scene. Here he worked and recorded with original greats such as Oliver Lake, Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Davis (with numerous releases on India Navigation and other radical NY avant-jazz labels). At this time Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali became mentor to AkLaff, with Aklaff practically living at Ali’s legendary club/live space ‘Ali’s Alley’.In the 1980s Aklaff continued his solo career with releases such as ‘Fits Like A Glove’ (1985), and ‘Sonogram’ (1989) featuring the cream of the New York 80s avant-garde players (Sonny Sharrock, Geri Allen etc) as well his continued work alongside artists of the calibre of Don Byron, Anne Claudine Myers, Julius Hemphill, Henry Threadgill and Oliver Lake.‘House of Spirit: Mirth’ is one of the most radical of deep jazz releases of its time. Avant-garde beyond a doubt but with an Afro-centric rhythmical intensity hard to find in the myriad of independent free/loft jazz recorded in New York at the time.Influenced by Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Duke Ellington and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, AkLaff also studied African drumming travelling to and working in the Ivory Coast, Togo, Swaziland, Malawi, Liberia as well as Nigeria, where he performed with Fela Kuti.Pheeroan AkLaff currently performs as a solo artist in New York and as part of the Cecil Taylor group. In 2006 he also co-founded Seed Artists Inc. for Artists and Communities, a non-profit organisation promoting inter-generational activities, concerts and music lessons, based in Brooklyn.

This bespoke perfect replica reissue comes in a limited edition hardback box-case CD edition and a very limited heavyweight vinyl and gatefold sleeve edition of 1000 copies worldwide.”

Sam Goldberg Having Had Forgot, LP Record (Arbor) $15.99 “Having Had Forgot marks a distinct departure from Sam Goldberg’s past recordings, both his lush electric guitar and synth work as well as his borderline-pop project Radio People. Having Had Forgot features Sam working with a rotating ensemble of Midwestern musicians (Tiger Hatchery’s Ben Billington, Mike Forbes, and Andrew Young; as well as J. Guy Laughlin, Ben Osbourne, and Jeff Host; for a total palette consisting of acoustic and electric guitar, field recording, percussion, synthesizer, saxophone, double bass, and clarinet). The result is eight careful, delicate songs; varied in instrumentation, but presenting the same elegant consideration of mood and contemplation as his solo works. Private music from a young man; a contemporary offering in the tradition of ensemble records on Windham Hill from William Ackerman and Mark Isham; the opportunity of actualizing personal moments through various actors and the unique textures they are each able to contribute to the whole. In an edition of 500 records with full color jacket and inner sleeves.” – Arbor Records

SIC Thought Noises, LP Record (Dark Entries) $16.00 Dark Entries is proud to shed light on underground Belgian New Wave pioneers, SIC, with the career-spanning release “Thought Noises.” SIC were a post-punk band from the industrial city of Charleroi in the francophone part of Belgium. They were formed by Francis Pourcel, Alain Neffe (Bene Gesserit), Micheline Dufert, and Mario Berchicci in 1977. Francis and Alain had previously played with Krautrock band Kosmose in the mid 70s. In 1978 Alain left the group to launch the cassette label Insane Music. The new trio released their debut 7” “Voltage Control” in 1979 on Artibano Records. By 1980 Mario left and was replaced by a Korg KR-55 drum machine. As a duo, SIC self-released the “Cover Girls Smile”/ “Between” 7” in 1980, which was played by John Peel on Radio 1 in London. Unable to replicate the studio sounds for live concerts, the duo recruited three additional musicians, Wilhelm Dunker (bass), Henry Krutzen (saxophone) and Danièle Daoust (synthesizer). In 1981 their final 7” single, “Free Radio Stations” was self-released and the band recorded a demo tape to help secure live gigs. SIC continued to play live over the next two year but eventually broke up in 1983.
SIC stray from more conventional post-punk, mixing the affordable Korg MS-20 and Roland RS-09 synthesizers with jazz and funk elements. All three 7”s and demos are united by strong, watery Rickenbacker bass chords reminiscent of American jazz legend Jaco Pastorius and UK bassist Mick Karn (Japan). A heavy reliance on rhythm and Micheline’s strong, insistent voice give SIC its own moody personality. More of a European group than a Belgian one, SIC take cues from Magazine, “Live At The Witch Trials”-era The Fall, Delta 5, The Raincoats and Kleenex. Their lyrics are original and autobiographical, documenting commercialism, technology and communication as we enter the 1980s.
“Thought Noises” compiles all three SIC 7″ singles released from 1979-1981 plus 6 unreleased demos from a 1981 recording session. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP includes a lyric sheet insert. More than 30 years later, SIC are a document of a mutant strain of new wave ripe for discovery.

Skatalites, The The Skatalites Play Ska, LP Record (Kingston Sounds) $17.99 “Comprised of musicians who honed their skills at the Alpha Boys School in Kingston, The Skatalites were prolific in the extreme – rustling up over 100 sides of music in little over two years and helping to mint the Ska sound which eventually evolved into what we now know as Rocksteady.”

Starter s/t, LP Record (Dark Entries) $16.00 STARTER was a minimal electronic/synthpop group from Switzerland, formed in 1980 by vocalist and fashion designer Francis Foss, Claudine Chirac (from fellow Swiss Wave group Grauzone) and Jet Harbour. Originally the band also included Stephan Eicher who co-wrote two songs but departed before the band recorded their debut album. STARTER began in the city of Bern when Francis, Claudine and Jet decided to create their own brand of New Wave music inspired by Gary Numan and Kraftwerk. They released their debut, self-titled album STARTER in the summer of 1981, making this summer the 30th anniversary of this long out-of-print and extremely hard to find LP!
Using early analog Roland and Korg synthesizers, STARTER’S music seamlessly merges wistful electronics from Germany’s Neue Deutsche Welle movement and powerful vocal stylings from French Chanson. Alongside their Swiss Wave contemporaries like Grauzone, Yello, Liliputt/Kleenex, STARTER created a new brand of hallucinatory ‘Techno-Pop’ made up of chopped rhythms, energetic and almost epileptic vocals that are immediately catchy and hypnotic, perfect for the dance-floor. In 1985 STARTER reformed as a duo with Francis Foss on vocals again and Gary Grey on synth/rhythm programming. Their first single “Victim” took cues from Italo Disco and Bobby Orlando’s Hi-NRG dance sounds and is the bonus track on Side B of this LP. The song “Part of You” was chosen as the lead track on the Gomma compilation CD Teutonik Disaster 2 in 2003 recruiting new fans worldwide and ushering Francis Foss to release a homemade CD-R/DVD compilation of the entire STARTER discography in 2004.
All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley in 2011. Each LP includes a lyrics sheet with unreleased photos and a STARTER badge/button.
Steve Colson & The Unity Troupe Triumph!, LP Record (Universal Sound / Soul Jazz Records) $25.99 2011 Reissue of Steve Colson’s 1980 “Triumph” – originally released on the Silver Sphinx imprint, Universal Sound (A Division of Soul Jazz) has treated this classic record to a Collector’s special edition LP in edition of 1000.”In the early 1970s pianist and composer Adegoke Steve Colson and vocalist Iqua Colson were both members of The Association for Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), the radical home of jazz music in Chicago, and spiritual home of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In 1980, Colson released ‘Triumph!’, recorded in Chicago with a stellar line-up of Art Ensemble and AACM members in the group including Joseph Jarman and Doug Ewart. This album was released on the private-press Silver Sphinx label, and distributed mainly in the local Chicago area. Universal Sound/Soul Jazz Records are releasing this extremely rare deep spiritual jazz album for the first time ever as a hardback edition CD and a very limited edition of 1000 –copy exact reproduction vinyl.”
Sugar Minott The Leader For The Pack, LP Record (L&M Records) $19.99 Light center ring wear and slight half-inch tear on the top. Otherwise, brand new. Vinyl is new. Original Pressing.
System Liliputt Harpa, LP Record (Dark Entries) $16.00 System Liliputt was the solo project of Geir Vasseng from the Stavanger area of Norway in the early 1980s. He released one cassette, Harpa a mini-album of 6 songs in Feburary 1984 on his own label Geva Tapes & Studio that was limited to 150 copies. 27 years later Dark Entries has baked and transferred the original master tapes, adding 5 bonus tracks, restoring this lost piece of Norsk D.I.Y. dark post-punk.
Harpa, in its entirety and all the demos were recorded in Geir’s home studio from November 1982 to September 1983. All tracks were written, produced, recorded and performed by Geir without the involvement of any others. Influenced by the darker/melodic post-punk bands Young Marble Giants, Fra Lippo Lippi and Seventeen Seconds/Faith era Cure, System Liliputt created rich atmospheres with intricate guitar work, ethereal synths and sombre vocals. Whereas the original six Hapra songs capture a brooding and downbeat feel the demos showcase Vasseng’s ability to write a catchy, wistful pop song with minimally treated instruments.
All tracks have been carefully remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley for the first time on vinyl. The original cassette included six inlay cards with lyrics which are re-printed here along with English translations by Geir’s son! Another piece of Norway’s rich post-punk past is ready for your ears.
The Assassinators Sigt Efter Hjertet, LP Record (Alerta Antifascista / Rebel Alert) $14.50 First they released a demo, then came their first 7″, and after thatcame their demo as a 7″ – all of them very well received by me and Idare to say a large number of punks worldwide. In late 2007 theyvisited the studio again and returned with the twelve tracks thatbecame this LP. Charged with emotional melodies and punk attitudethey’ve once again created songs that are impossible to listen towithout getting completely sucked in to. I’ve in earlier reviews saidthat their lyrics are poetic, but that is also true about their musicand the structures of their songs. It’s very poppy at times and allthis rambling about emotions and poetry might scare away some realhardcore d-beaters, but to avoid any misunderstanding I want to makeit perfectly clear that this is without a doubt punk. Punk in a pureand danceable form. Punk to which you can shake your ass whileclenching your fist – not in anger but with dedication. TheAssassinators makes me believe we can actually change the world to thebetter, even though they do address some dark topics in their lyricsas well. Still, this band gets me motivated to do what I think is bestfor myself and others and are doing so while providing one hell of asoundtrack. But The Assassinators didn’t just spend time writingmusic, this LP also comes with a thick booklet full of artwork and alltheir lyrics in Danish and English, along with in depth commentaries. This band has definitely not forgotten that it’s very possible tocombine punk, fun, and politics and get a very successful result. “Letthis be a declaration of love or a kick in the ass”!!!
The Imposters The Time Has Come, LP Record (Secret) $10.99 “I loved this bands 7″ “pool maintenance” and that’s definitely the place to start with this band. This LP has the trademark twangy surf punk sound of JFA and Agent Orange, with a little bit of more “out there” punk sort of like the Minutemen or something. But just when it starts to lose me, they bring it back with the surf punk/hardcore attack. A cool band playing in a pretty unique style.” – Havoc

Various Artists Qat Coffee & Qambus: Raw 45s From Yemen, LP Record (Parlortone) $22.00 Qat, Coffee & Qambus: Raw 45s From Yemen is a compilation of rare Yemeni vinyl singles, showcasing the little-documented, evolving local music styles in the 1960s and 1970s. Vintage oud and vocal music inspired by the qat-chewing, coffee-sipping, qambus-playing culture of Yemen. Although part of the classical Arabic musical tradition, the music of Yemen takes its rhythmic lead as much from the East African coast (a mere 20 miles across the Red Sea) as the surrounding Arab Peninsula. Little has been written about the music and culture of one of the world’s oldest civilizations, and each 45rpm disc gives a small glimpse of the poetic tradition, the unique local oud styles as well as an insight into people’s day to day lives, or the highs and lows of human relationships. Overall, the compilation gives a flavor of the sights and sounds of Yemen, with detailed notes that tell the story of the hunt for music that has mostly lain forgotten in the antique markets of the capital, until now. Pressed on high quality vinyl with a full-color cover featuring 78rpm record sleeve graphics, and an insert of extensive liner notes and photos.

Various Artists SpokAnarchy! (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), LP Record (Flat Field Records) $19.99 SpokAnarchy! chronicles the manic highs and desperate lows in the emergence of the alternative music scene in culturally barren Spokane, Washington. Before MTV, before the Internet and cell phones, Spokane seemed a long way from anywhere. A small group of bored teenagers banded together to make art and music and live a lifestyle that tested the social and moral boundaries of conservative America. This coming-of-age story becomes a coming-of-middle-age story as the scene’s survivors take an unflinching look at their past, and how their lives were shaped by those years of music and mayhem. Aggressive and experimental music was the glue that brought them together, and 30 years on still resonates. SpokAnarchy was nearly two years in production with some 60 people interviewed for over 100 hours of footage shot in New York, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Astoria, Seattle, and Spokane. HD interviews are intercut with archival footage in this feature-length documentary with a soundtrack that draws on on a decades’s worth of undiscovered music. By turns funny, sad, shocking, and inspirational, SpokAnarchy! is the real-life story of what it means to look back on a youth spent challenging the social and cultural norms of small-town America.

Victims / From Ashes Rise Split LP, LP Record (Havoc) $10.99 I have been a fan of both of these bands since their first releases. When the opportunity arose to work with both of them at once I was eager to make it happen. From Ashes Rise plays dark, slightly metallic hardcore that is not unlike early His Hero Is Gone mixed with Scandinavian hardcore like Skitystem and 80′s UK crust like Antisect. Drawing on those influences From Ashes Rise has moved this sound into it’s own territory so to simply label it “Tennessee style” hardcore would be oversimplifying their sonic progression. From Ashes Rise recorded at Polymorph in the Bay Area and I can safely say this was the most expensive recording ever released on Havoc, but the Production is intense and flawless. From Ashes Rise previously released a 7″ and 2 LPs on Partners in Crime and Feral Ward. They followed up the split with the Nightmares LP on Jade Tree/Havoc.Victims from Sweden play aggressive fast Scandinavian hardcore not unlike early Skitsystem or Wolfbrigade. You can hear the influence of early Swedish hardcore like Anti-Cimex, Shitlickers and Crude SS mixed with the heavier sounds of 90′s crust core, but there is also some influence from the early 80′s US hardcore sound. This recording was produced by Mieszko at studio Soundlab. Victims have a 7″, a split 7″ and an LP on Yellow Dog/Deadalive and later released the Victims..In Blood LP/CD on Havoc. Cover artwork is an original piece from Pushead. From concept to completion this has been one of the most protracted and expensive projects ever undertaken by Havoc records. This release was greatly anticipated and was well worth the wait.
Vita Noctis Against The Rule, LP Record (Dark Entries, Minimal Maximal) $25.00 Dark Entries and Minimal Maximal have joined forces to re-issue the complete discography of Vita Noctis on a double vinyl LP. Previously these songs were restricted to limited self-released cassettes, compilation appearances and a sole 12″ Mini LP. Beware, this is abrasive, primal music made by irritated teenagers full of angst!
Vita Noctis were a trio from Vilvoorde, Belgium in the Flemish Region. Inspired by the post-punk movement twin brothers Kris and Jos Kips convinced Kris’ girlfriend Martine Genijn to start a band in 1981.They recorded their earliest songs onto a 2-track tape deck in their bedroom studio using second-hand equipment they could afford: Roland TR-808 drum machine, Casiotone MT-31, Ibanez bass guitar and a Korg MS-20 keyboard. Their first album “In The Face Of…DEATH” was self-released on cassette only in 1984 by the “Much Money Good Boy, No Money Good-Bye” cassette in 1985. In February 1986 the band recorded five songs at Studio Care in Gent, Belgium later released as the self-titled 12″ Mini-LP on Mad In Belgium Records. Their final recording session was November 1986 returning to the band’s bedroom studio, resulting in the song “She Likes Me” which appeared on the “Climax Productions Presents” LP.
“More “arthouse” than “goth”, Vita Noctis blend the sneering attitude of punk with the spartan structures of minimal electronics. The band had more in common with the early electronic Sheffield scene of Cabaret Voltaire, Vice Versa or early Human League than their Belgian contemporaries. Urgent vocals go from a whisper to a scream in seconds and sound restless, bored and irritated all at once. Fuzzy guitar, simple baselines and crude electronics take turns accompanying the dynamic vocal stylings. While lyrics tackle weighty topics like death and religion, the landscape they paint is as playfully bratty as it is grim.
All songs have been remastered from the restored 1/4″ reel to reel tapes by George Horn at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley California. Each double LP comes in a deluxe gatefold jacket with cover art by original designer Stephan Barbery and never before seen band photos and lyrics for each song. Spanning three years and four recording sessions “Against The Rule” is the soundtrack to Armageddon, very fitting in the contemporary climate of dissatisfaction and social upheaval.
Wild Belle Keep You / Take Me Away, LP Record (Sandhill Sound) $9.29 12″ from Chicago duo. Heavy on the reggae/chill vibes.
