Pig Heart Transplant manipulates elements of a recording by Bay Area HC outfit Vacuum. So you still get the hardcore â and on one track, something resembling the band itself, blowing out the walls of a small studio. Elsewhere itâs just vocal tracks, manipulated to sound like concussion bombing, or the instruments jumbled up and pushed through a series of filters and effects until itâs unintelligible. I go for the weird records in the genre when I can because sometimes hardcore at this stage of the game is just boring, and no amount of energy can push it back in. Even little tweaks to the nervous system like this one can be exciting, and it makes me a little happier that a band in a somewhat aligned genre could handle this sort of reorganization of its sound. That said, itâs a short record and probably of limited interest, but most people have already beaten you to the punch by now, so get it while you still can. Mind Spiders

Meltdown

2nd album from Mark Ryan’s (Marked Men, High Tension Wires) Mind Spiders, and it’s a Meltdown, alright. This is a very different beast from the s/t Mind Spiders LP released just 13 months ago. The most obvious difference is that while the s/t LP was recorded piecemeal, with Mark more-or-less playing all the instruments, Meltdown is the first Mind Spiders recordings to feature the full live band. And what a band it is: members of The Bad Sports, High Tension Wires, Marked Men, Uptown Bums, etc etc. The fact that there are 2 drummers (Mike from the Marked Men AND Greg from The High Tension Wires both play drums at the same time) gives alot of these songs a rhythmic complexity that sets the songs apart from a lot of other garagey” type bands. Loosely organized like the first LP, with the more straightforward, rocking stuff on side A and the weird curveball stuff on side B, Meltdown, while remarkably cohesive, blends a lot of different elements: Great sounding guitar tones. Happy, warm organ. Mean, buzzing synth. 60′s pop sensibilities. Snotty garage rockers. Dark, brooding postpunk. Weirdo sci-fi soundtrack stuff. Nods to Krautrock. Oh, and did we mention there are 2 drummers? Meltdown is definitely one of the high points in the Dirtnap catalog, and given our history with Mark Ryan, that is saying alot. The Blind Wink

To be honest, I am proud of 90% of the music I’ve released to date. I’ll admit that other 10%, yeah these are what I’ve realized to be bad calls that I’ve kind of come to regret in a number of ways that will remain unmentioned, but this is one of my favorite records I’ve done and it was done by my favorite current band. It’s NOT HARDCORE so I will just say that now. You only want super fast and have a closed in mind, you’ll def not enjoy this. The band plays catchy punk but it’s not pop punk. It’s indie rock influenced but not indie rock. I can’t describe this band exactly as its so spread out except they play their style extremely well and their songs stick in your head from one to the next. The sound they have now is a bit different from where they started. At 1st they had a Dinosaur Jr heaviness done to a Greg Ginn riff feast, a Husker Du wall of sound all crossed with a Descendents catchiness sort of way to their music. And yes, all of that still applies to the band to a degree but they incorporate more middle era Beatles, soul, early Kinks and post Let It Be later Replacements to the mix and that’s Tenement’s latest masterpiece. 11 stellar songs (the 1st 6 appeared on the rough mix tour tape release ‘the Blind Wink’ last winter) mastered by their guy Justin Perkins who’s worked the knobs on the majority of their records. I would highly suggest this to those who actually listen to what I would consider good music as well as punk in general. – Cowabunga

Sleep Talk

Sleep Talk features twelve new songs that Kim Fowley and Lou Christie would have clawed each others eyes out to get a hold of in the early 60′s. Shannon can belt out fierce and fun like Wanda Jackson and Etta James going head to head in a competition for the last bottle of hooch in a song like King of the Sea” and then play that heart-broken-bad-girl-tryin’-to-do-good bit that hasn’t been done this well since the Tammys or the Shangri-La’s in a song like “Tired of Being Bad”. Cody, the bands guitarist and other main song writer/singer comes on like a crooning, hiccuping, lo-fi garage version of Buddy Holly with a touch of Marc Bolan and the aformentioned Christie. Although he excercises the economy and agression of Garage Rock in ways a man like Christie would never have imagined but with a tenderness and vocal register you know he’d appreciate. Ian, the bands drummer, in addition to his skill at his own instrument provides additional back ups that would make Ennio Morricone and a tribe of head hunters equally as proud.Together The Clams provide a secret ingredient that binds together doo-wop, early rock and R&B, girl group classics, 60′s garage/psych, surf and glints of punk in a way that’s hard to get across in words. You have to listen to it. You have to see it when it comes to your town. You have to be there and feel that moment when you’re compelled to turn to the stranger next to you and slow dance together to a song like “Done With You” and then immediately shake every part you got that shakes to “The Cult Song”. Call it what you want; Young Oldies, Garage Rock, Surf, Doo Wop, Punk, whatever, just call it on Friday night.”

1977 movie directed by Pasquale Squitieri and set in Corleone, Sicily during the 1950s, two childhood friends, Michele Labruzzo and Vito Gargano, have chosen opposite roads in life. Michele is now a leader of the farmersâ movement and its quest to free the land from the iron fist of the nobility and the mafia (represented by Baron Miceli and local mafia boss Don Giusto Provenzano), while Vito is the trusted âyes-manâ of Don Provenzano, and eventually vows to kill Michele in exchange for control over the Baronâs lands. Sound Ceremony

‘We bring to your attention, an invitation to the bizarre.’ So goes the final song on Canadian born guitarist and songwriter Ron Warren Ganderton’s 1979 LP with his group Sound Ceremony. Ganderton self-released three LPs with the band while living in the United Kingdom during the 1970s and ’80s. First came Guitar Star (1973), then Sound Ceremony (1979) and finally Precious As England (1981). Despite some modest distribution and frequent gigs, the band never seemed to really take off and Ganderton eventually returned to his native Vancouver (where he still resides), leaving hundreds of unsold records in the attic of his house. While these copies seem to have been lost to the ravages of time, One Kind Favor will now reissue the second Sound Ceremony LP. All of the group’s efforts are undeniably unique, but their middle record is the true brain-damaged winner of the bunch. The record surely fits somewhere into the UK punk explosion of the day, but it’s also looks back to the mid-sixties rock that Ron cut his teeth on and ahead to some sort of maniac future form of entertainment that perhaps has not been invented yet. Ganderton’s mildly ‘out of it’ stream of consciousness lyrics show a clear lack of self-censorship and that’s really one of the albums strongest assets. He has created this character of himself as a huge rock star and a sex symbol, and who are we to deny his claims? The band chugs along amiably as Ganderton covers such terrain as his beating heart (it’s made of rock), his distaste for education (he’d prefer to teach a lesson in bed) and his electric brain (which happens to be insane). If you’ve never heard a singer do a count-off all the way up to seventeen, then now is your big chance! Features what is perhaps the greatest anti-cigarette song of all time.

In collaboration with Keith Fullerton Whitman and Greg Davis, Ben Vida explores cross-control voltage-integrated improvisation and real-time automatic group composition. Ben has worked with artists Hisham Bharoocha (duo as Soft Circle), Siebren Versteeg, Doug Aitken, Nadia Hironaka and Mathew Suib. He has played in ensembles led by Tony Conrad, Rhys Chatham, and Werner Dafeldecker. As an improviser, he has performed with Milo Fine, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Chad Taylor, Kevin Drumm, Yamatsuka Eye and C. Spencer Yeh, among many others. He has released over 20 records on such labels as Thrill Jockey, Drag City, PAN, Amish, Bottrop-Boy, HÃ¤pna and Kranky. In 2011, Ben was Composer in Residency at Diapason Space, NYC and at EMS Studios, Stockholm and was awarded a Swedish Arts Committee Travel Grant, ISSUE Project Room Emerging Artists Commission and Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona “Composing with Process” Exclusive Works Commission. Esstends-Esstends-Esstends is a collection of spatial compositions in which audio focal points shift between external and internal emanation sources. The intent with this work is to escape the stereo image and create an activated listening space of expanded spatialization. Using just intoned pitch combinations to produce difference tones and harmonic distortions, sound materials are created that emanate from both the playback speakers and inner ear of the listener. By engaging the listener’s sense of aural perception and sound localization in relationship to compositional structure, these pieces act to reframe the listening experience and encourage an engagement with, not only the form and aesthetic of the music, but the sonic space a recorded piece of music projects. Omnivore

First album by Glenna Van Nostrand, a Cambridge, MA-based performance artist obsessed with archaic telecommunication hardware. Using solo vocals run through an old telephone, amplified by a variety of radios, her work creates its own rhythms through hypnotic layering, repetition and the imperfections built into her chosen delivery system. Alternately ethereal and cracked, her performance takes simple kernels of thought and speech, creating mystifying vistas of otherness that hint at the eternal now. The only specific musical accompaniment comes from her use of a telephone’s touch pad as a keyboard, but the rich weirdness of her compositions is consistent and dazzling. Misty Hush Revival

Your Heart Is Broken

One of the most obscure U.S. private pressings from the late ’60s/early ’70s. For many years, The Misty Hush Revival name was only a rumor whispered in collector’s circles, with only a handful of copies known of the original album around today. Like The Bachs or The Index, this is one of those hard-to-describe albums which seems to live in a world of its own. Despite the late 1972 release date, the music here sounds more late ’60s than early ’70s and the whole album has a cool, lost-in-time atmosphere. The group were in fact a club band from New Jersey, but surprisingly all the tracks are originals — no cover versions — and they range from fragile, dreamy pop-psych numbers to raw garage, fuzzed-out jams and teen-beat sounds. Like Patrick Lundborg says in Acid Archives: “A cool, atmospheric trip for fans of the tri-state late ’60s club sound.” First time-ever reissue, remastered on 24-bit. Sympathy Nervous

Automaticism

Sympathy Nervous is the project of Japanese artist Yosihumi Niinuma. Influenced by both classical and Krautrock, he began recording in 1979, and released several records on the highly coveted Vanity label. He continued to record and self-release much of his work throughout the ’80s and ’90s. His sound is intelligent and probably the most unique minimal synth to come out of Japan. Exploring dystopian themes, his music is well balanced and beautifully recorded. Automaticism features songs Yosihumi Niinuma recorded between 1979-1981. Most were originally slated for a cassette release but never saw the light of day until now. When the Tsunami washed away the coast of Japan last March 2011, Niinuma lost everything: an entire lifetime of recordings, instruments, hand built sequencers, and even his home. Orgelvark: En Stadig Samling Svensk Syntmusik — a solid collection of Swedish synth music.

Minimal Wave proudly presents a newly remastered vinyl edition of the cult Swedish cassette compilation Orgelvark, subtitled En Stadig Samling Svensk Syntmusik — ‘a solid collection of Swedish synth music.’ Orgelvark is a compilation of Swedish synthpop, experimental and industrial music representative of the underground tape scene that thrived there in the 1980s. Many of the bands didn’t quite fit into one particular genre, and most remained unknown. They lived in small villages and were making what can be described as electronic folk music. Orgelvark was originally compiled and released on cassette in 1986 by Tor Sigvardson, also known for his own musical project 18:e Oktober and cassette label Neukoln. The vinyl edition includes five previously unreleased tracks which were submitted to Tor for the original 1986 cassette release but due to space limitations, never made it on there. All the audio has been remastered from the original tapes especially for vinyl by Tor himself. Kimio Mizutani

A Path Through Haze

180 gram vinyl reissue of this ultra-rare ’70s Japanese rock album. Kimio Mizutani was the guitarist in the excellent Japanese freak-out group, Love Live Life + 1 and this reissue is of his first solo album from 1971. Mizutani plays electric and “folk” guitar and leads a largish ensemble (bass, drums, organ, Moog and vocals) through what is widely-regarded as one of the true psychedelic masterpieces of the ’70s Japanese scene. Sensitive interludes (accompanied by the Toyama String Quartet and the Etoh Wood Quartet), tasteful nods to progressive/fusionist extension and a lovely, hovering psych guitar from Mizutani dominate proceedings. A nice merger of hard rock conceptualization and the complexities that would evolve from it — and, until now, almost impossible to hear within the confines of western society.

Kokotsu No Sekai

LP version. Although Ike Reiko was a mere 17 years of age when she recorded 1971′s Kokotsu No Sekai, she was already a star in the world of Japanese erotic movies. Despite the tough-gal image, the music is pretty darn life-affirming, so don’t think for a second you’re getting an easy listening album here — this is about as sexual as music can get. Throw “French Kiss” out of the window and give a kiss goodbye to your Serge Gainsbourg records, Ike Reiko is more sizzling than a branding iron as it makes its mark on the farmer’s herd. The sex is literally dripping from every note on this record — the style is “Iroke KayÃÂ´kyoku” or erotic kayÃÂ´kyoku (kayÃÂ´kyoku being a style of Japanese pop) but the sort of naÃÂ¯ve jazz and pseudo spy theme movie music is all draped in a shroud of sexual shouts, screams and coos from the clearly excited Reiko. One must assume that she was in some kind of state of euphoria in the recording studio from the evidence on offer here, either that or she’s a pretty realistic faker — it’s a smouldering collision, and that’s about all that needs to be said. Kokotsu No Sekai has to be one of the finest gifts for the music fan in search of that killer oddity. First 180 gram vinyl reissue.

Panabrite is the project of Norm Chambers — not a household name to most people, but for those who have been reveling in his music for the last few years, he is absolutely adored. He is also, we should add, the man responsible for one of the most-loved synth albums of the last few years, although that’s a journey he took incognito and we just aren’t at liberty to divulge that identity quite yet. Some will be quick to chalk Soft Terminal up as just another Kosmische record, but that’s just the surface dressing. There is something deeper happening here: vivid, liquid dreams are sculpted into intricate fantasy landscapes, each layer revealing another aspect of Chambers’ production prowess. The thing with Chambers, is that he has an innate ability to write richly-textured, melodic compositions that have as much in common with vintage electronic library music as they do with minimal synth-pop and ’70s prog. Soft Terminal opens with “Rainbow Sequence” and “Index Of Gestures.” The former remains understated, moving simply and slowly while pulling open the curtain on the rest of the album. With “Index Of Gestures,” Chambers opens up the sequencers and lets them fly. Dizzying passages resonate and when the piece finally feels like it will lift off, he tightens the reins and dives straight into an underwater sequence. But that’s only a small part of the story. “Janus” opens with finger-picked guitar arrangements augmented with synth chords and rising leads. The guitars return on “Sound Softly” while Chambers’ ghostly, robotic vocals float away unscathed. On “Beta Axis Terminal,” pointillist tones flutter in and out before sharp, sequenced chord progressions overtake them. As the piece continues to build, vocoder hovers above thickened basslines and you feel lost in a dystopian sci-fi novel. But ultimately, Chambers’ pop sensibilities are most evident on the mini-masterpiece, “Camembert Symphony.” Pushed along by the constant thrum of a drum machine, multiple melodies are interwoven, wrapping themselves tightly around you. The Oram Tapes Volume One

2CD version. Daphne Oram, founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, died in 2003 leaving a colossal archive of reel-to-reel tapes and documents behind. This important collection of material eventually made its way to Goldsmiths College, London, who have been administering it on behalf of the Daphne Oram Trust for the last few years. The collection holds over 400 tapes made by Oram during her lifetime, and 211 of those have been archived and catalogued by the college so far. The Daphne Oram Tapes: Volume One is the result of almost two years spent trawling through the archive in an attempt to piece together a coherent document of one of the most pioneering and genuinely experimental characters in electronic music history. Although some of Oram’s recordings have surfaced on the Oramics compilation (YOUNGAM 001LP), this compilation reveals a complex, dark and sometimes disturbing body of work which has, until now, been partially obscured by the more recognizable Radiophonic bleeps and whirrs the Workshop is best known for. This first volume focuses on Oram’s love of experimental forms, of musique concrÃ¨te, of the science and mystery of sound and composition. It comes at a time when her work is only just starting to gain wider acknowledgment in scholarly as well as popular circles. The “Oramics” machine (the first electronic musical instrument in history to be designed and built by a woman) has gone on display at the Science Museum in London, an important step in what will no doubt be a sustained effort to assert Oram’s rightful position as one of the most important figures in modern music. Working through the archive has been a life-changing experience, revealing a wealth of musical treasures that include recordings and sound effects made for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and Jack Clayton’s The Innocents, all the way through to field recordings made in Africa. The mission of Analog Africa is clear: searching in dusty warehouses for forgotten music to keep it alive. All tracks have been officially licensed, usually from the artists who label-head Samy Ben Redjeb also met with for detailed research. He conducted 16 interviews in various cities in Benin and Togo with artists, producers and sound engineers to reconstruct the history of the ’70s music scene for the booklet which also includes many rare photographs directly received from the artists. Like most modern music in French-speaking West African countries, the music of Benin and Togo was influenced by a few main musical currents: Cuban, Congolese and local traditional music, as well as Chanson FranÃÂ§aise. Additionally, the geographical location of Benin and Togo — sandwiched between Ghana and Nigeria — exposed Beninese and Togolese musicians to highlife music. The cultural and spiritual riches of traditional Beninese music had an immense impact on the sound of Benin’s modern music. Benin is the birth place of Vodun (or, as it is known in the West, Voodoo), and some of the rhythms used during traditional rituals — sakpata, sato, agbadja, tchenkoumÃÂ© and many others — were fused to soul and Latin music as early as the mid-’60s and later to funk. That fusion is the essence of this compilation. In the late ’60s and early ’70s, rock and soul music started creeping into the region. In particular, the music of James Brown and Johnny Halladay became immensely popular with university students. It was then that the music scene in Benin really started to take off. What made this musical revolution even more interesting is that most of the musicians could not read music. Often the music they made sounded one semi-tone away from being out of tune, but somehow they always managed to bring all the elements together into something new and exciting. One of the greatest bands of their era, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, who are featured on this compilation, took the Afro sound to another level by showing their musical versatility in many forms. Although they were consciously copying Western artists, they would always inject a dose of psychedelic Afro grooves that would make their music unmistakably Beninese. Their biggest song, “Gbeti Madjro” is believed to have revolutionized the music industry in Benin in the ’70s when the country went through a period of political turmoil. The song is full of raw breaks and hypnotic rhythms, as well as screams ÃÂ la James Brown. After this song, many bands in Benin started screaming on their recordings, hence the title of this compilation. Latin-influenced sounds are present on this compilation, too. Ouidah, a city on the Atlantic coast of Benin, is home to a large Brazilian community, or, as they are called in Benin, “Agoudas.” Members of that community are descendents of slaves who returned from Brazil at the end of the 19th century. Their dances and songs are still being performed and fused into the traditional Beninese rituals. That, too, can be heard in modern Beninese music. The proximity of the giant neighbor Nigeria can be heard on the track “Djanfa Magni” which features the amazing trumpeter/ saxophonist Tidjani KonÃÂ© fronting the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. KonÃÂ©, whose career started in Mali as the founder and band leader of the Rail Band de Bamako, had played with Fela Kuti for a short while, hence the strong Afrobeat influence. There are countless stories to be discovered in the extremely well-researched booklet and the music is truly mind-blowing. So delve into the forgotten raw and psychedelic Afro sounds from ’70s Benin and Togo and experience the African Scream Contest.

Aphex Twinâs 1994 masterpiece Selected Ambient Works Volume II includes barely anything resembling a beat or any sign of typical song structure, yet the album continues to garner adulation generally reserved for holy music. Its synthetic construction belies the intuitive, human, melancholic and uplifting nature of the music. Some have speculated the album was intended by Aphex Twinâs Richard D. Nirvana did it, Chavez did it, with a good deal more ingenuity in arrangements (and they continue to do it when reunion offers coax them out of retirement). Jawbox did it, Drive Like Jehu did it, the Foo Fighters did it (albeit better then than now), Torche continues to do it (though it remains to be seen if they remember how to), and now Roomrunner is doing it, rolling a grungy, inside-out duct tape ball of hiss over unsuspecting crowds, with room for giant chords that allow everything else in the tracks to hang in place.Super Vague is just four songs to the EPâs six, and includes a download code for a live set to pad out the length and justify the cost. The band does a better job of addressing the sameness that weighs down the EP, while leaving their formula basically unchanged. The title track picks up where the tape leaves off, while âUndoâ plays with a fast-break, opportunistic jangle that soon swells into another steamroller riff sesh. âNo Waitâ starts off big and gets even bigger, utilizing those same rhythmic progressions, either going up or down the scale, occasionally pushing a half-step higher in order to show how the song has grown outside the shape of its container. The brief noise blast of âPetrifiedâ closes things out with a track from their demo, scaring everyone remaining out of the room.It ainât broke; theyâre not fixing it. Best of Times

Murphy’s Law usher in the ’90s with a reinvigorated blast of their debauchery-laced brand of comedic punk. Stylistically, Murphy’s Law makes quite a jump on The Best of Times. The band did dabble in skacore long before it exploded, but was always pretty much a flat-out hardcore unit in the ’80s. The Best of Times finds Jimmy Gestapo and friends combining funk, reggae, ska, and hardcore into their own distinct brew, shedding any dogmatic restrictions applied to the standards of their genre in the ’80s. Production by Fishbone’s John “Norwood” Fisher and Philip “Fish” Fisher lends authenticity and diversity to The Best of Times, as does the added instrumentation by several members of Fishbone. Covers of James Brown and Stevie Wonder provide some insight into Murphy’s Law’s sometimes controversial and misunderstood affiliation with the skinhead faction, finally putting to rest any allegations that racism or fascism have anything to do with the band’s outlook. Although the group manages to shed this stereotype and expand musically on The Best of Times, the subject matter doesn’t otherwise stray too far from earlier work. Songs about pot, beer, girls, and cars showcase the glorious immaturity and quest for fun that pretty much define Murphy’s Law. When the band does get serious, which isn’t very often, it’s in the interest of unity and friendship. The title track is basically a fan tribute, thanking a small but loyal group of followers for the support that’s enabled Murphy’s Law to continue the party. The ska-tinged but heavy “1%” revels in the outcast-minded punk rock ethos, giving nod to those who embrace the good and bad of surfing the fringe of culture and society. Classic Murphy’s Law rage surfaces on “Harder Than Who,” an attack on the mindless aggression and competition that sometimes rule the hardcore scene.

Sam McPheeters (Former singer of Born Against, Wrangler Brutes, and Men’s Recovery Project, regular Vice Magazine and OC Weekly contributor) has just written his first novel titled The Loom of Ruin and is touring the U.S. in support of it’s release.

McPheeters will be reading selections from the novel and will have the first copies available for purchase.

Kickboxer Chang Hung travels to Thailand seeking revenge on the Thai boxer that paralyzed his brother. While there, he begins experiencing terrible hallucinations, and further gets tangled ina web of Buddhism, spirit-fu, and black magic as he tries to undo a centuries-old curse on his family.

Hong Kong horror flicks don’t get much more batshit insane than 1983′s THE BOXER’S OMEN. It brings the candy-colored palette of Obayashi’s “House” but adds more magic, blood, maggots, and vomit. Much more vomit. (See! pukin’ all over yaz!)

The Wastelanders will be at the wheel through the rest of the month, so there’s more larfs to come. Then in April, in conjunction with a monthlong exhibition of Polish posters held at Fort Gondo, our good pal Chris Smentkoski will be curating a month of Polish films! Assembly of God	Submission Obedience Denial, 7″ Record (Havoc)	$4.99	“Assembly of God was a hardcore punk band from Oklahoma (none of the members lived in the same city, they all met in Oklahoma city to practice). Chad from Brother Inferior sang and played guitar, with the Drummer of Burnpile and the Bassist of Subsanity. Burnpile being a fast SEHC band, Subsanity a grind band and Brother Inferior a punk/hc band you can see that there are several different musical influences coming together on this release. That said, I would liken the sound mostly to the last Brother Inferior material, which was much faster and more aggressive than the earlier more anthemic stuff. Assembly of God recorded this 7″ and some comp tracks and sadly, broke up. They only played a few out of town shows, one of which was Thrash Fest 2. Chad went on to form the Levelling which took things into an even faster realm. As with all of Chad’s projects you can see that much thought was put into the lyrics. Chad has always approached issues from a very punk working man’s perspective. His no nonsense point of view makes for lyrics that hit the nail on the head every time.” – Havoc

AUK storm back with 2 brand new tracks ‘ Rise ‘ / ‘ Where Are Your Gods ‘, both combine the best elements of hardcore punk / metal and are filled with more melodic hooks that reach out to grab your attention. ‘ Rise ‘ sounds like it belongs in some disturbing H.P. Lovecraft novel of nightmarish destruction and hope. It’s lyrical phrasing is very much akin to Percy Bysshe Shelly and it’s grinding guitar and guttural roar ( worthy of any death metal band ), will surely have you gripped. The track ‘Where Are Your Gods ‘, sees religious dogma brought before the court, chewed up and spat back out, with all the venom of the accuser and leaves it’s pious christian alter, smashed and sprawling in the dirt.”

Aus Rotten was one of the best punk bands or the 90′s for two reasons. 1. They play excellent hardcore punk in the tradition of Discharge, the Varukers and Chaos UK 2. They make the connection between punk and radical politics in a clear and understandable way. That is to say, Aus Rotten’s politics are right up front, but phrased in an accessible fashion rather than obtuse intellectualisms or a PC sermon. Aus Rotten’s popularity brings to mind the days of Discharge, Conflict and the Subhuman when political punk bands were just as well known and liked as commercial bands. Fuck Nazi Sympathy is a challenge to the punk scene not to tolerate Nazis and Fascism in the scene. Tuesday, May 18, 1993 is a stark indictment of the genocide in Bosnia showing how little humanity has learned from the horrors of the Holocaust. Aus Rotten also released the Anti-Imperialist 7″ which has recently been repressed as well as a split 7″ with Naked Aggression. A full length LP on Tribal War followed in 1996. The LP features a fold out poster sleeve, extensive information and a copy of Rotten Propaganda, singer Dave’s anarchist newspaper. Once again this sort of packaging and creative attempt to expose the listener to a different political view brings to mind the days of Crass, Discharge, and Conflict. Aus Rotten has toured Europe, Japan and the United States. Aus Rotten released “The Rotten Agenda” LP on their own Rotten Propaganda label in 2001. Aus Rotten broke up in 2001. Civil Disobedience	In A Few Hours of Madness, 7″ Record (Havoc)	$4.99	Civil Disobedience formed in Michigan around 1992. Their demo tape sold several hundred copies through Profane Existence mail order. I saw Civil Disobedience when they opened for Destroy in Detroit and was so impressed I asked them if they would release a record on my new label. The 7″ which resulted is arguably Civil Disobedience’s best material. Powerful hardcore with speed and power but not exactly thrash. The two vocalists switch back and forth rapid fire. I would compare this to Conflict around Ungovernable Force but really its totally unique. This has been one of our most consistent selling releases even though it has been out for over ten years now. A lot of people tell me it is their favorite record of the 90′s or even favorite record ever. Civil D. later put out an LP on Profane Existence with a slightly different line up. Code 13	A Part of America Died Today, 7″ Record (Havoc)	$4.99	After several tours across America Code 13 suffered its first major line-up change when drummer Criminal Shane was arrested and incarcerated in Wisconsin. Josh from the band Inveigh was recruited to fill in and would end up staying with the band for a year, two tours and a 7″. Fast powerful hardcore, period. Over the years Code 13 became part of a burgeoning scene in Minneapolis, along with bands like Civil Disobecience, State of Fear, Misery, Murderers and Assrash. To show our appreciation to the kids who supported us we did 100 copies on clear vinyl with a screenprinted camouflage cover for our record release show. Of the three 7″s most people consider this to be Code 13′s strongest material. The grind/crust influence had faded somewhat by this point and the approach more of a fast hardcore style. Some reviewers had a hard time with the mix of styles, that Code 13 couldn’t easily be nailed down as crust, thrash, or street punk. But it was our goal from the start to mix up styles and still have drive an energy.

Four tracks and all of them are amazing. And now Iâm getting a strange record collection sensation that my life will hereby be incomplete until I track down a copy of this EP for myself. Damage Deposit	Straight to the Bottom, 7″ Record (Havoc)	$4.99	Review from Razorcake: “Laced-up-tight pugilistic hardcore that covers lyrical topics like Lynyrd Skynyrd, ninjas, puppies, and testicle punches, all stewed in the rather serious gravy of socio-political consciousness. But in a good way; if Damage Deposit comes across as anything, itâs that theyâre utterly sincere. These guys, unlike a band like For the Worse, are not likely to ever be caught singing hardcore odes to their toilet. I might be going out on a limb here, but I think they sound a little bit like Good Clean Fun at times â maybe a little faster and, of course, with frowny-face tattoos instead of smiley-face ones. Musically, itâs tight and confrontational traditional hardcore and, for me, with hardcore itâs not really who does something ânewâ with it (because that too often turns into emo or metal), itâs just who breaths fucking fire back through its veins and gets it stomping and raging again like the pissed-off brute that it is. Damage Deposit does that. If youâre at all familiar with Felix Havoc then this is probably exactly like the sort of band that youâd expect him to be in. Top notch.”
Desperat	Suicide Attack, 7″ Record (World Funeral)	$7.49	From the frozen wastelands of Sweden comes a powerhorse of a 7â. The much-loved D-beat/rock-n-roll style is in full effect here, not unlike a stripped-down AUKTION. And much like another excellent d-beat band I reviewed in this issue â UNLEARN â this band has risen above the terrible trappings and clichÃ©s of this easily-tired rawpunk genre. Just by writing lyrics about a diverse array of topics that are actually relevant, they have blown most of the competition out of the water. Each song on this 7â is about something relevant. The title track talks about suicide bombers around the world, brainwashed by religious leaders to kill themselves and others for their religion. The next song, Love Song is a song that gives proper respect to those activists and groups who do their part to make a better world (when was the last time you heard a dis-song encouraging support for activists, and even giving hope for a brighter future?). Side B starts with Children Should Play, which goes after those who profit from child labor in sweat shops, which is a topic that seems to have fallen out of favor with the punks lately. Lastly, we have Computer Control, a song about civil liberties and loss of privacy. Let me sum this up â this is a great record. It has everything I look for in one package â simple, yet effective cover art. Great sounding songs â not too raw, but certainly not overproduced by any stretch. Formed in 1988 and continuing through several line-up changes until 1994. Releases include a demo in 1989. Total Fucking Chaos 7″ on Relapse in 1991. Split 7″ with Disrupt on Reduced to Slavery Records 1991. Burn this Racist System Down 7″ 1992. Necropolis LP on Sound Pollution in 1994. Split 7″ with Disturb on MCR records 1994. The full story of Destroy is told on the liner notes of the Necropolis LP. Destroy was contemporaneous with bands like Disrupt, Extreme Noise Terror, Napalm Death and Doom. Fast political hardcore with grind and metal influences. In my opinion this 7″ was our best work. Destroy lived the Chaos when it really meant something.The Destroy material was all compiled onto the CD version of the Necropolis LP on Sound Pollution. In 2002 this was re released on Havoc as the Destroy Discography CD and contains all the recorded Destroy material with the exception of the 1989 demo. After Destroy broke up Mitch later played drums in the Murderers and Code 13. Felix sang in Code 13 and Damage Deposit. Nate plays guitar in Brainiol, Stormcrow and bass in Nigel Pepper Cock. Mark W. played in Disembodied and is now in Look Back and Laugh. – Havoc

They draw as much from the lyrical dexterity of Morrissey and Jarvis Cocker as they do from the scuzzed-up melodic exuberance of early My Bloody Valentine and The Pixies.
Government Issue	Make An Effort EP, 7″ Record (Dr. Strange)	$6.99	This only has four songs, but boy do they blast! John Stabb sounds angrier than ever and Brian Baker’s guitar playing is so raunchy and LOUD it’s hard to believe he’s in Bad Religion now… Maybe he was trying to compete with John Barry (who played guitar on the Legless Bull EP). ‘Teenager In A Box’, which is about a friend who died in a car accident age eighteen (‘You were eighteen/now you’re a statistic’), is one of the most intense hardcore songs ever if you ask me. Stabb sings it like he can’t believe it really happened. ‘No Way Out’ and ‘Twisted Views’ may sound a little metallic (thanks to Brian Baker, who’s never been ashamed of his metal influences, just listen to Dag Nasty), but even those songs match up to anything by top-notch hardcore bands like Negative Approach and Urban Waste and what have you. Of course G.I. ends it all with one of many versions of their signature tune, ‘Sheer Terror’. And yes, it’s by far my favorite version. Ok, I like Legless Bull and Boycott Stabb as much as the next guy, but THIS record, to me, is what punkrock is all about. Amen. -PETER VAN GALEN

Nods to Free, Humble Pie, even Trapeze can be sussed out in the mix, but at the end of the day, Real Women is straight-up Mount Carmel all the way. Searing leads, smokey vocals, thundering rhythms, cascading drums, hyperbolic hyperbole… itâs all here. Mount Carmel brings back the spirit of 1973 like no one else. The only difference now is better weed and shittier barbiturates. Itâs hands-down pure rock, no frills. Nary a retro contrivance is to be heard. These guys live it for real. Honest. So climb on board with Real Women and see what youâve been missing. The results are astounding.

Sutcliffe Jugend	Blue Rabbit, Audio CD (Crucial Blast)	$14.98	Appearing in the early â80s as an offshoot of the legendary UK band Whitehouse, Sutcliffe Jugend was soon recognized as an equally confrontational and extreme purveyor of the early power electronics / industrial sound, producing on their early Come Organisation releases We Spit on Their Graves and Campaign some of the most abrasive and violent music ever. Since then, the group has pursued a unique sonic vision that combines transgressive subject matterâdark, cerebral musings on violence and sexual perversionâwith brutal feedback and synthesizer damage. Recently, however, Sutcliffe Jugend has explored darker, more restrained (at least on a sonic level) sounds alongside their harsher work, and Blue Rabbit is the latest such offering, unfolding like a night-terror across the albumâs eight tracks.For fans who are primarily familiar with the groupâs harsher output on Come Org and Cold Spring, Blue Rabbit is a revelation; a seething, quasi-ambient nightmare that lingers with the listener, its creep factor enhanced by the unsettling paintings from band member Kevin Tomkins that make up the album art. One wonât find their trademark power electronics here, nor the dark throbbing industrial of 2011âs With Extreme Prejudice; this is a darker, more unsettling experience, saturated with an atmosphere of doom and smoldering violence, as if Sutcliffe Jugend were channeling the creaking dread of Nurse With Woundâs Salt Marie Celeste through a series of blood-freezing psychosexual nightmares.

Buzz	See You Sioux, LP Record (Dark Entries)	$16.00	Dark Entries is honored to present the âSee You Siouxâ cassette by BUZZ for the first time ever on vinyl. BUZZ began as the brainchild of J-C Van Thienen in Lille, northern France, ten miles from the Belgian border. He released one album in 1985, the highly limited demo cassette See You Sioux. In the late 70s and early 80s J-C witnessed the punk explosion while studying and working abroad in England. He regularly attended concerts by Adam and the Antz, The Sound, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Ski Patrol, Spizzenergi, The Cure, interviewing the bands for a fanzine. Returning to France, and feeling inspired, J-C bought a Soundmaster drum machine and two second-hand synthesizers in 1983. He started composing songs applying the DIY punk ethos akin to Cabaret Voltaire and Fad Gadget, who like him were eccentrics in a pop-rock world. Borrowing a 4-track Portastudio from a friend, J-C recorded 7 songs that would become the skeletons for the âSee You Siouxâ album. The local radio station provided studio time for free so BUZZ enlisted help from the guitarist (Vincent) and drummer (Franck) of The Figurines. His neighbor, BÃ©atrice, added backing vocals. The result was the entirely self-produced See You Sioux cassette, recorded in one take. BUZZ combined new wave dancefloor appeal with the abrasive textures and irreverent attitude of post-punk. Lyrically, they addressed topics such as the Cold War, post-World War II tension in Berlin, the assassination of Kennedy, Pablo Picassoâs minimalism â all in a manner that was as sarcastic as it was politically-charged. The overall sound of âSee You Siouxâ fits nicely beside their French contemporaries: Opera Multi Steel, Norma Loy, Little Nemo, Taxi Girl, but is more aligned with their Belgian neighbors the Neon Judgement and Trisomie 21. Artwork for the cassette jacket was all done by J-C using letrasets, scissors, glue, coloring with markers and hand-numbered in an edition of 250 photocopies. Over the years, BUZZâs demo cassette travelled from bedrooms to dancefloors around the world, and even into the purse of Anne Clark around the time BUZZ supported her in Ghent and Paris. The success of See You Sioux landed BUZZ a deal with Danceteria Records, who would release four maxi 12â singles from 1986-1989. Around 1990 BUZZ took a break, eventually restarting in 2005 with the release of a career spanning compilation and remix album. J-C continues to write and release music today with his project Vuduvox. All songs on âSee You Siouxâ have been remastered from the original C-60 metal master tape for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. Each LP includes a fold-out, double-sided insert with photos, lyrics and liner notes by Anne Clark. 27 years later these demos provide a glimpse of the bleak post-industrial European wasteland as seen from the bedroom window during the French coldwave scene.

Between 1980 and 1982 the band released a handful of 7â and 12â EPs and the debut album âSeductionâ on their own independent label, Society Records. The band also recorded several sessions for Radio 1, including a John Peel session, and topped the Independent Charts with the single âSomewhere.â Their commercial debut, âHeaven Is Waitingâ was released in February 1984. They released two further singles and the album âLooking Throughâ before breaking up in 1986. After 24 years three original band members reunited to record the new album âChange of Skin,â released in July 2011. 1983 was The Danse Societyâs year. Playing sold out tours and the success of âSeductionâ won them a recording contract with Arista Records. Spending their advance on new equipment the band recorded an albumâs worth of demos in one day at Greenhouse Studios, London in May 1983. The line-up for this session was Steve Rawlings (vocals), Paul Nash (guitar), Lyndon Scarfe (keyboards), Tim Wright (bass) and Paul Gilmartin (drums). Judging from the mammoth lyric book that contains translations from spanish into 4 different languages, DERROTA has put a lot of consideration into their words, and althought the english translations are slightly awkward, the songs appear to be thoughtful andbeyond your standard political rants. The vocalist has a convincing animated, furiously shouted/screamed style. A lot of the guitar work is random, playfull and scratchy but the guitarris also knows when to bash out into a full-on hardcore frenzy. In general, DERROTA blends differents elements of ’80′s, 90′s and modern hardcore and punk styles, but doesns’t appear to be dedicated to any particular era. Some of their musical ideas don’t work, like the stoner jam-out at the end of the LP – shit nearly put me to sleep – but the random and nealty-littered, jittery guitar parts make DERROTA’s songs memorable, distinct and interesting. This LP is not for everybody- the modern punk who flavours an unbalance mixture of noise and apathy needn’t bother, but those who still enjoy listening to sincere hardcore punk will find a lot to like here. Europa	La Ultima Emocion!, LP Record (Dark Entries)	$16.00	Europa was a short-lived synthpop group from Valencia, Spain formed in 1980 by Julio Ã¢â¬ÅNexusÃ¢â¬Â Pastor (synthesizers), Alfonso Aguado (vocals, guitar), Lino OviaÃÂ±o (vocals, drum machine), and JosÃÂ© Luis Macias (synthesizers). The quartet championed the use of synthesizers, drum machines and other polyphonic gadgets in a city that was stuck in the throws of progressive rock. They recorded and released their only album La ÃÅ¡ltima EmociÃÂ³n in 1981 on cassette, released by DAI (Division Avanzada Independiente) a label interested in bands Ã¢â¬Åcapable of building electronic sounds from drum machines, sequencers, synths and effects, rather than conventional instruments like guitars and basses.Ã¢â¬Â The original issue of La ÃÅ¡ltima EmociÃÂ³n was a single-sided cassette and limited to 500 copies. The band mixed all the tracks at their home studio using a Roland Juno 60, Casiotone 202, Korg Polysix, MS-20, MS-10 and the KR-55 drum machine. As part of the Spanish Techno-pop movement of the 1980s, EuropaÃ¢â¬â¢s songs featured arpeggiated synthesizers and upbeat drum machines that flashback to the sound of Vince ClarkeÃ¢â¬â¢s Depeche Mode days. Comparisons could be made to other Spanish Techno-pop bands like Aviador Dro, Vocoder or Metal y Ca but Europa weaved a unique style of driving, energetic rhythms, bouncy keyboards and soaring vocals perfect for dancing or speeding into outer space. Shorty after their debut release the band would switch their name to ÃÅ¡ltima EmociÃÂ³n releasing an EP in 1983 and an album in 1984 before breaking up. Alfonso Aguado went on to front Los Inhumanos, Julio Pastor launched the Valencia techno bands Megabeat and Interfront, while JosÃÂ© Luis Macias and Lino OviaÃÂ±o formed ComitÃÂ© Cisne. In 2010 the original Europa line-up reformed to play a few select live shows celebrating the re-issue of their 1984 cassette MÃÂ¡quinas RomÃÂ¡nticas on Turia Records of Spain. Their sound remains clean, rhythmic and futuristically strange, transporting crowds to another dimension. SIC	Thought Noises, LP Record (Dark Entries)	$16.00	Dark Entries is proud to shed light on underground Belgian New Wave pioneers, SIC, with the career-spanning release âThought Noises.â SIC were a post-punk band from the industrial city of Charleroi in the francophone part of Belgium. They were formed by Francis Pourcel, Alain Neffe (Bene Gesserit), Micheline Dufert, and Mario Berchicci in 1977. Francis and Alain had previously played with Krautrock band Kosmose in the mid 70s. In 1978 Alain left the group to launch the cassette label Insane Music. The new trio released their debut 7â âVoltage Controlâ in 1979 on Artibano Records. By 1980 Mario left and was replaced by a Korg KR-55 drum machine. As a duo, SIC self-released the âCover Girls Smileâ/ âBetweenâ 7â in 1980, which was played by John Peel on Radio 1 in London. Unable to replicate the studio sounds for live concerts, the duo recruited three additional musicians, Wilhelm Dunker (bass), Henry Krutzen (saxophone) and DaniÃ¨le Daoust (synthesizer). In 1981 their final 7â single, âFree Radio Stationsâ was self-released and the band recorded a demo tape to help secure live gigs. SIC continued to play live over the next two year but eventually broke up in 1983. SIC stray from more conventional post-punk, mixing the affordable Korg MS-20 and Roland RS-09 synthesizers with jazz and funk elements. All three 7âs and demos are united by strong, watery Rickenbacker bass chords reminiscent of American jazz legend Jaco Pastorius and UK bassist Mick Karn (Japan). A heavy reliance on rhythm and Michelineâs strong, insistent voice give SIC its own moody personality. More of a European group than a Belgian one, SIC take cues from Magazine, âLive At The Witch Trialsâ-era The Fall, Delta 5, The Raincoats and Kleenex. Their lyrics are original and autobiographical, documenting commercialism, technology and communication as we enter the 1980s. âThought Noisesâ compiles all three SIC 7â³ singles released from 1979-1981 plus 6 unreleased demos from a 1981 recording session. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP includes a lyric sheet insert. More than 30 years later, SIC are a document of a mutant strain of new wave ripe for discovery.

Originally the band also included Stephan Eicher who co-wrote two songs but departed before the band recorded their debut album. STARTER began in the city of Bern when Francis, Claudine and Jet decided to create their own brand of New Wave music inspired by Gary Numan and Kraftwerk.They released their debut, self-titled album STARTER in the summer of 1981, making this summer the 30th anniversary of this long out-of-print and extremely hard to find LP! Using early analog Roland and Korg synthesizers, STARTERâS music seamlessly merges wistful electronics from Germanyâs Neue Deutsche Welle movement and powerful vocal stylings from French Chanson. Alongside their Swiss Wave contemporaries like Grauzone, Yello, Liliputt/Kleenex, STARTER created a new brand of hallucinatory âTechno-Popâ made up of chopped rhythms, energetic and almost epileptic vocals that are immediately catchy and hypnotic, perfect for the dance-floor. In 1985 STARTER reformed as a duo with Francis Foss on vocals again and Gary Grey on synth/rhythm programming. Their first single âVictimâ took cues from Italo Disco and Bobby Orlandoâs Hi-NRG dance sounds and is the bonus track on Side B of this LP. The song âPart of Youâ was chosen as the lead track on the Gomma compilation CD Teutonik Disaster 2 in 2003 recruiting new fans worldwide and ushering Francis Foss to release a homemade CD-R/DVD compilation of the entire STARTER discography in 2004. Influenced by the darker/melodic post-punk bands Young Marble Giants, Fra Lippo Lippi and Seventeen Seconds/Faith era Cure, System Liliputt created rich atmospheres with intricate guitar work, ethereal synths and sombre vocals. Whereas the original six Hapra songs capture a brooding and downbeat feel the demos showcase VassengÃ¢â¬â¢s ability to write a catchy, wistful pop song with minimally treated instruments. All tracks have been carefully remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley for the first time on vinyl. The original cassette included six inlay cards with lyrics which are re-printed here along with English translations by GeirÃ¢â¬â¢s son! Another piece of NorwayÃ¢â¬â¢s rich post-punk past is ready for your ears.

In late 2007 theyvisited the studio again and returned with the twelve tracks thatbecame this LP. Charged with emotional melodies and punk attitudethey’ve once again created songs that are impossible to listen towithout getting completely sucked in to. I’ve in earlier reviews saidthat their lyrics are poetic, but that is also true about their musicand the structures of their songs. It’s very poppy at times and allthis rambling about emotions and poetry might scare away some realhardcore d-beaters, but to avoid any misunderstanding I want to makeit perfectly clear that this is without a doubt punk. Punk in a pureand danceable form. Punk to which you can shake your ass whileclenching your fist – not in anger but with dedication. TheAssassinators makes me believe we can actually change the world to thebetter, even though they do address some dark topics in their lyricsas well. Still, this band gets me motivated to do what I think is bestfor myself and others and are doing so while providing one hell of asoundtrack. But The Assassinators didn’t just spend time writingmusic, this LP also comes with a thick booklet full of artwork and alltheir lyrics in Danish and English, along with in depth commentaries.This band has definitely not forgotten that it’s very possible tocombine punk, fun, and politics and get a very successful result. “Letthis be a declaration of love or a kick in the ass”!!!

Victims / From Ashes Rise	Split LP, LP Record (Havoc)	$10.99	I have been a fan of both of these bands since their first releases. When the opportunity arose to work with both of them at once I was eager to make it happen. From Ashes Rise plays dark, slightly metallic hardcore that is not unlike early His Hero Is Gone mixed with Scandinavian hardcore like Skitystem and 80′s UK crust like Antisect. Drawing on those influences From Ashes Rise has moved this sound into it’s own territory so to simply label it “Tennessee style” hardcore would be oversimplifying their sonic progression. From Ashes Rise recorded at Polymorph in the Bay Area and I can safely say this was the most expensive recording ever released on Havoc, but the Production is intense and flawless. From Ashes Rise previously released a 7″ and 2 LPs on Partners in Crime and Feral Ward. They followed up the split with the Nightmares LP on Jade Tree/Havoc.Victims from Sweden play aggressive fast Scandinavian hardcore not unlike early Skitsystem or Wolfbrigade. You can hear the influence of early Swedish hardcore like Anti-Cimex, Shitlickers and Crude SS mixed with the heavier sounds of 90′s crust core, but there is also some influence from the early 80′s US hardcore sound. This recording was produced by Mieszko at studio Soundlab. Victims have a 7″, a split 7″ and an LP on Yellow Dog/Deadalive and later released the Victims..In Blood LP/CD on Havoc. Cover artwork is an original piece from Pushead. From concept to completion this has been one of the most protracted and expensive projects ever undertaken by Havoc records. This release was greatly anticipated and was well worth the wait.
Vita Noctis	Against The Rule, LP Record (Dark Entries, Minimal Maximal)	$25.00	Dark Entries and Minimal Maximal have joined forces to re-issue the complete discography of Vita Noctis on a double vinyl LP. Previously these songs were restricted to limited self-released cassettes, compilation appearances and a sole 12â³ Mini LP. Beware, this is abrasive, primal music made by irritated teenagers full of angst! Vita Noctis were a trio from Vilvoorde, Belgium in the Flemish Region. Inspired by the post-punk movement twin brothers Kris and Jos Kips convinced Krisâ girlfriend Martine Genijn to start a band in 1981.They recorded their earliest songs onto a 2-track tape deck in their bedroom studio using second-hand equipment they could afford: Roland TR-808 drum machine, Casiotone MT-31, Ibanez bass guitar and a Korg MS-20 keyboard. Their first album âIn The Face Ofâ¦DEATHâ was self-released on cassette only in 1984 by the âMuch Money Good Boy, No Money Good-Byeâ cassette in 1985. In February 1986 the band recorded five songs at Studio Care in Gent, Belgium later released as the self-titled 12â³ Mini-LP on Mad In Belgium Records. Their final recording session was November 1986 returning to the bandâs bedroom studio, resulting in the song âShe Likes Meâ which appeared on the âClimax Productions Presentsâ LP. âMore âarthouseâ than âgothâ, Vita Noctis blend the sneering attitude of punk with the spartan structures of minimal electronics. The band had more in common with the early electronic Sheffield scene of Cabaret Voltaire, Vice Versa or early Human League than their Belgian contemporaries. Urgent vocals go from a whisper to a scream in seconds and sound restless, bored and irritated all at once. Fuzzy guitar, simple baselines and crude electronics take turns accompanying the dynamic vocal stylings. While lyrics tackle weighty topics like death and religion, the landscape they paint is as playfully bratty as it is grim. All songs have been remastered from the restored 1/4â³ reel to reel tapes by George Horn at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley California. Each double LP comes in a deluxe gatefold jacket with cover art by original designer Stephan Barbery and never before seen band photos and lyrics for each song. Spanning three years and four recording sessions âAgainst The Ruleâ is the soundtrack to Armageddon, very fitting in the contemporary climate of dissatisfaction and social upheaval.
